The demography of free-roaming dog populations and applications to disease and population control.

1. Understanding the demography of domestic dog populations is essential for effective disease control, particularly of canine-mediated rabies. Demographic data are also needed to plan effective population management. However, no study has comprehensively evaluated the contribution of demographic processes (i.e. births, deaths and movement) to variations in dog population size or density, or determined the factors that regulate these processes, including human factors. 2. We report the results of a 3-year cohort study of domestic dogs, which is the first to generate detailed data on the tempor

Statin Use and Arterial Calcification in the General Population: A Longitudinal Analysis and a Negative Control Population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Statins can increase arterial calcification by directly affecting the vessel wall. Insufficient evidence on long-term effects may reflect short follow-up and confounding by indication. We used long-term population-based cohort data to examine the effect of statin use, cumulative duration, and duration-response association with calcification volume across multiple key arteries. The robustness of the findings was evaluated using a negative control population. METHODS: Rotterdam Study participants with computed tomography (CT)-assessed calcification volume in coronary

Association between age at menarche and infertility in Tabari cohort population: a population-based case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: There are conflicting results regarding the association between age at menarche (AAM) and infertility in different nations. Thus, this study aimed to determine this relationship in a cohort of northern Iranian population (Tabari Cohort Study). RESULTS: The mean menarche age for the case and control groups was 13.48 ± 1.63 and 13.67 ± 1.72, respectively (P: 0.060). The rate of infertility in women of early, normative, and late menarche were 56.3%, 50.4% and 30.4% respectively. The results of the adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that women with early AAM (OR: 3.36, 95% CI

Hospital or population controls for case-control studies of severe childhood diseases?

There are few empirical data to determine which control group seems best in a case-control study for a severe disease: population controls or hospital controls. The author conducted a case-control study of leukemia in children using two control groups, population and hospital controls (cancers other than leukemia and severe blood diseases), between 1980 and 1993 in Québec, Canada. Maternal, paternal, and child factors not known to be associated with leukemia as well as factors possibly associated were selected for analysis. Most factors were taken directly from parental interviews, but two fac

Impact of intensive control on malaria population genomics in Eastern Myanmar.

The malaria elimination program in Kayin State (Myanmar) utilizes malaria posts for rapid detection and treatment together with mass drug administration (MDA) in high transmission villages, and has reduced transmission by 97%. We examined the impact of control on parasite genomic parameters, using 2270 genome sequenced Plasmodium falciparum infections from 283 malaria posts, sampled over 58-months (2015 - 2020). Parasites were genetically depauperate: 1726 single-genotype infections comprised 166 unique genomes (≥90% IBD), while nine families (≥45% IBD) accounted for 62.5% of parasites sampled

Lifetime cost-effectiveness of myopia control intervention for the children population.

BACKGROUND: Myopia is a common eye condition and projected to affect half of the global population by 2050. Controlling its progression during childhood may prevent associated ocular diseases in later life. Certain interventions retard myopia progression but their long-term costs and consequences are not well understood. We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of myopia control via an optical approach using the Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) lens over a lifetime. METHODS: We constructed an individual-based, state-transition model to simulate 1) the development and progression of my

Comorbid diseases in bullous pemphigoid: A population-based case-control study.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most prevalent autoimmune blistering disorder, triggered by autoantibodies targeting hemidesmosome components. It is associated with substantial morbidity and increased mortality. No studies comprehensively evaluate all comorbidities before and after diagnosing patients with BP. We aimed to investigate all BP-associated comorbid diseases and their patterns of associations. This nationwide population-based study included 5066 patients with BP and 10 132 controls between 2011 and 2021. We performed an automated mass screening of 546 diagnostic codes to identify BP-

Perinatal risk factors for SUDEP: A population-based case-control study.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a leading epilepsy-related cause of death. Researchers have highlighted the similarities between SUDEP and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), but perinatal risk factors such as those identified for SIDS have not been assessed previously for SUDEP. We conducted a population-based case-control study of 58 SUDEP individuals and 384 living epilepsy controls born after 1982, utilizing the Swedish Medical Birth Register together with other national health registers and individual medical records to examine if prenatal and perinatal factors are associa

Wolbachia-Virus interactions and arbovirus control through population replacement in mosquitoes.

Following transfer into the primary arbovirus vector Aedes aegypti, several strains of the intracellular bacterium Wolbachia have been shown to inhibit the transmission of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses, important human pathogens that cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. In addition to pathogen inhibition, many Wolbachia strains manipulate host reproduction, resulting in an invasive capacity of the bacterium in insect populations. This has led to the deployment of Wolbachia as a dengue control tool, and trials have reported significant reductions in transmission in relea

Rheumatoid arthritis and pyoderma gangrenosum: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The association between pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was not investigated in the setting of controlled studies. The risk of PG among patients with RA is not established. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to evaluate the magnitude of the association between RA and the subsequent development of PG. Additionally, we aimed to characterize patients with RA-associated PG relative to other patients with PG. METHODS: A population-based case-control study was conducted comparing PG patients (n = 302) with age-, sex-, and ethnicity-matched control subjects (n = 1497) wit

Toxoplasma gondii and multiple sclerosis: a population-based case-control study.

According to the hygiene hypothesis, parasites could have a protective role in the development of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Our aim was to assess the association between presence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies and MS. MS patients were randomly selected from a population-based incident cohort of MS patients in the city of Catania. Age and sex-matched controls were randomly selected from the general population. Clinical and sociodemographic variables were recorded with a structured questionnaire and a blood sample was taken for serological analysis. Specific T. gondii IgG have been detected

Brazilian Spotted Fever Prevention through a Nonlethal Capybara Population Control Strategy.

INTRODUCTION: Brazilian spotted fever (BSF), a lethal tick-borne Rickettsioses (2000 - 2018 >600 human deaths) involving synanthropic capybara as host. METHODS: We introduced an alternative to mitigate human-capybara conflicts and epidemiologic concerns of BSF. Complex aspects like transmission dynamics, risk areas, host mobility, and birth rate control, were considered to develop a prevention strategy using an anti-GnRH vaccine. RESULTS: The propositioned immunocontraceptive potentially remove and prevent the spread of BSF from endemic areas. CONCLUSIONS: We propose the anti-GnRH vaccine a

Antipsychotics and severe hyponatremia: A Swedish population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotics have been claimed to cause hyponatremia. The risk associated with individual antipsychotics, or groups (first-generation [FGAs] or second-generation [SGAs] antipsychotics), is not well-documented. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between antipsychotics and hospitalization due to hyponatremia. METHODS: The general Swedish population was the base of this register-based case-control study. Comparisons were made between patients hospitalized with a principal diagnosis of hyponatremia (n = 14,359) and matched controls (n = 57,383). Multivari

Population based case-control study of serious non-fatal motorcycle crashes.

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle sales, registration and use are increasing in many countries. The epidemiological literature on risk factors for motorcycle injury is becoming outdated, due to changes in rider demography, licensing regulations, traffic mix and density, road environments, and motorcycle designs and technologies. Further, the potential contribution of road infrastructure and travel speed has not yet been examined. METHODS/DESIGN: A population based case-control study together with a nested case-crossover study is planned. Cases will be motorcycle riders who are injured but not killed in

Population-based case-control study of cigarette smoking and essential tremor.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is inversely associated with smoking cigarettes. Despite long-standing clinical links between PD and essential tremor (ET), there are surprisingly few data on smoking in ET. We studied whether smoking cigarettes is inversely associated with ET. Using a population-based, case-control design, cigarette smoking habits were assessed in 221 prevalent ET cases (75.5 +/- 7.1 years old) and 663 matched controls (74.6 +/- 7.0 years old). In logistical regression analyses, diagnosis (ET vs. control) was the dependent variable, and cigarette smoking status, the independent variab
