Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common psychological condition identified in combat veterans and individuals who have experienced natural or manmade disasters or other traumatic experiences. PTSD is known to increase a patient's risk of emergence delirium after undergoing general anesthesia. While this is well known by certified registered nurse anesthetists in practice, particularly those in military hospitals, recommendations for anesthetic management of patients with PTSD is notably lacking. The aim of this article is to provide anesthesia considerations synthesized from availabl

BACKGROUND: The application of mastoid pressure dressings following mastoid and middle ear surgery is widely practised to reduce the risk of haematoma and seroma. There are a number of minor morbidities associated with use of the dressings, as well as a financial cost associated with an overnight stay in hospital or a return appointment for removal of the dressings. The benefit of having these dressings in situ overnight is questionable.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 133 patients who had their mastoid dressing removed 2 h after their procedure was undertaken at our Hospital. The patient

PURPOSE: To present the techniques of anesthesia management used during percutaneous carotid interventions involving balloon dilation and stent deployment.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Two access routes may be used for carotid angioplasty, and the anesthesia techniques for each are different. In the conventional common femoral artery approach, the patient is sedated, heparinized, and ventilated by mask with 100% oxygen; the groin site is anesthetized locally with lidocaine. When the procedure reaches the point of balloon inflation, the patient is awakened, and atropine is administered to block the ba

Intravenous (IV) propofol was compared with IV thiopental/pentobarbital as a sedative for children undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain or spine. Fifty-eight outpatients (aged 11 mo to 6 1/2 yr, ASA grade I and II) were enrolled in the study and randomized to two groups. After IV cannulation, Group I received IV propofol (1-2 mg/kg), followed immediately by a propofol infusion (75-100 micrograms.kg-1.min-1). Group II received IV thiopental (1-3 mg/kg) followed by a pentobarbital bolus (2-3 mg/kg). Supplemental thiopental doses (1-2 mg/kg) were administrated to maintain adeq

Perianesthesia care provided to obstetric patients is on the rise due to current obstetric practice habits, changes in the maternal population, and the increased desire for scheduled childbirth. Both scheduled and emergent cesarean deliveries create risk, yet the use of general anesthesia increases maternal morbidity and mortality significantly. Obstetric emergencies make up the majority of emergent cesarean deliveries. Detrimental events during pregnancy and childbirth may be categorized into hemorrhagic, septic, or anaphylactic shock. Excessive loss of circulating volume with subsequent loss

Airway management is a skill that all healthcare professionals need to learn. This skill is used in two specific areas. First, in emergency situations such as cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest. Second, and the subject of this article, the postanaesthetic patient. This article explores not only the anatomy of the respiratory system but the different techniques and methods employed to manage a patient's airway. Airway management can be divided into three distinct phases. The first phase deals with the management of the airway while the patient undergoes an operation; this is managed by the an

Perinatal clientele have become more complex in their presentation and care today than ever before, requiring care in units other than the traditional obstetric or perinatal unit. Therefore, it is extremely important that the nurses caring for these patients know the associated standards of care, understand the importance of communication, and work to ensure the safety of the patient. This article provides an overview of the standards of ASPAN and the Association of Women's Health, Obstetrics, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), guidance on initial and ongoing assessments of this population, and emp

Because the availability of new, peripherally acting mu-opioid-receptor antagonists is expected soon, it is important for all members of the surgical team to familiarize themselves with new approaches and also re-evaluate older approaches to help improve patient outcomes. "Preop nurses" have numerous responsibilities, among which are mitigating some of the adverse outcomes of surgery such as postoperative ileus (POI), making these nursing personnel indispensable to the proper implementation of multimodal management protocols for POI. Establishing basic preoperative procedures is an important p

Perianesthesia nurses care for patients who receive anesthesia, sedation, and analgesia. Anesthesia, sedation, and analgesia can adversely affect the patient with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Increased patient morbidity and mortality have been associated with the perianesthesia management of the patient with OSAS and can potentially impact every phase of the perianesthesia experience. Negative outcomes have been associated with respiratory arrest after the administration of opioid or sedative medications, difficult intubation or failure to intubate, and respiratory obstruction afte
