One-piece extended depth of focus intraocular lens implantation in the capsular bag in the presence of a posterior capsule rupture.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Posterior capsule rupture has historically prevented implantation of one-piece intraocular lenses in the bag. We present a case of extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens insertion into the capsular bag after posterior capsule rupture with an excellent post-operative outcome. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 64-year-old female presenting for bilateral refractive exchange to reduce dependence on spectacles. The patient had hypermetropic presbyopia, with no other previous ophthalmic history. She had a non-significant cataract in both eyes. Pre-operative

Cascade catalytic multilayer modified intraocular lens for enhanced and safer posterior capsule opacification prevention.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common complication after cataract surgery. It is primarily caused by the proliferation, migration, and adhesion of residual lens epithelial cells within the capsular bag following phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Although investigations of surface modification onto IOL have partially reduced PCO development in recent years, there are still challenges in long-term efficacy and intraocular biocompatibility. In this study, a cascade catalytic system is constructed using natural enzymes onto mesoporous silica nanopartic

A case report of phacolytic glaucoma in lens cortex behind posterior capsule: A CARE-compliant article.

RATIONALE: Phacolytic glaucoma (PLG), a secondary open-angle glaucoma caused by high molecular weight proteins leaking through the capsule of a hypermature cataract. Leakage of liquefied lens cortex behind the posterior capsule is rare. In this paper, we review a case of phacolytic glaucoma in the lens cortex behind posterior capsule. PATIENT CONCERNS: This case report describes a 79-year-old male patient with a 7-year history of progressive blurred vision and a 1-day history of distended in his left eye. He underwent phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation at our faci

CuInS/ZnS quantum dots modified intraocular lens for photothermal therapy of posterior capsule opacification.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery is one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness. The cause of PCO is the capsule fibrosis developed on implanted Intraocular Lens (IOLs) by the de-differentiation of Lens Epithelial Cells (LECs) undergoing epithelial mesenchymal transition. How to prevent PCO has been a challenge to scientists and ophthalmologists for decades. Here we demonstrated the use of carboxylated CuInS/ZnS quantum dots (ZCIS QDs), which are free of toxic heavy metals and are more biocompatible, as photothermal nanomedicines. The ZCIS QDs are m

Use of a pulsed neodymium Yag laser (picosecond) to open the posterior lens capsule in traumatic cataract: a preliminary report.

The use of an ultra short Nd Yag laser pulses is described for the opening of secondary traumatic cataract and iridocapsular synechiae. Both pigmented and non pigmented ocular tissue were cut without causing adverse thermal effects and without opening the eye. The laser instantaneous release of energy causes total ionization of the medium and formation of a plasma, followed by a hydrodynamic shock wave originating at the energy zone boundary. The temperature at the site of the laser contact cannot exceed 2 X 10(-3) degrees C, which is not harmful to the eye. Further, this procedure requires no

Impact of Age-Related Changes in Lens Shape on the Increased Risk of Posterior Capsule Opacification Observed in Pediatric Cataract Patients.

PURPOSE: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) rates are higher in young cataract patients compared to adults, a phenomenon attributed to a higher proliferative potential of young lens epithelial cells (LECs). This study investigates the hypothesis that implanting standard (adult-sized) intraocular lenses (IOLs) in pediatric patients, whose lenses are smaller and more spherical, results in a low contact between the IOL and the posterior lens capsule (PLC), thus contributing to elevated pediatric PCO rates. METHODS: Simulated PLCs (sPLC) modeling the size and curvatures of human lenses of eigh

Myo/Nog cells are present in the ciliary processes, on the zonule of Zinn and posterior capsule of the lens following cataract surgery.

Myo/Nog cells, named for their expression of MyoD and noggin, enter the eye during early stages of embryonic development. Their release of noggin is critical for normal morphogenesis of the lens and retina. Myo/Nog cells are also present in adult eyes. Single nucleated skeletal muscle cells designated as myofibroblasts arise from Myo/Nog cells in cultures of lens tissue. In this report we document the presence of Myo/Nog cells in the lens, ciliary body and on the zonule of Zinn in mice, rabbits and humans. Myo/Nog cells were rare in all three structures. Their prevalence increased in the lens

The intraocular lens as a drug delivery device for an epidermal growth factor-Receptor inhibitor for prophylaxis of posterior capsule opacification.

PURPOSE: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) occurs as a common complication after cataract surgery. Erlotinib is an inhibitor of the epidermal growth factor-Receptor and reduces critical cellular events leading to PCO. In this in vitro study, Erlotinib-modified intraocular lenses (IOLs) employed as a drug delivery device have been evaluated for PCO prevention. METHODS: The IC50 concentration of Erlotinib was determined by using FHL-124 cells. For the human capsular bag model, 40 cadaver eyes underwent sham cataract surgery. Sixteen capsular bags were exposed to the IC50 of Erlotinib. Intra

Self-assembled coating with a metal-polyphenolic network for intraocular lens modification to prevent posterior capsule opacification.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a main complication after cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOLs) implantation and is attributed to residual lens epithelial cells (LECs) migrating to the IOL surface and posterior capsules. IOL surface modification has been a newly-developing research filed in recent years; however, the applicability and economical acquisition of modified materials remain unsolved. In this study, we first applied a metal-polyphenolic network coating with a self-assembly technique on the IOL surface by using tannic acid (TA) combined with AlCl3, which are easily ac

Advances in interdisciplinary medical and engineering research of intraocular lens surface modifications to prevent posterior capsule opacification.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO), a common complication after cataract surgery, impacts a patient's long-term visual quality to various degrees. Although a neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy is a very effective treatment, it may lead to a serial of complications. Accordingly, the search for simple, safe, and effective methods to prevent PCO has received widespread attention. Various researchers are committed to the interdisciplinary collaboration between medicine and engineering fields, such as functionalizing the surface of the intraocular lens (IOL) v

Differing effects of dexamethasone and diclofenac on posterior capsule opacification-like changes in a rat lens explant model.

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) arises from lens cells that remain associated with the lens capsule after cataract surgery and subsequently become abnormal, proliferate and migrate into the visual pathway. In this study, a rat lens explant model was used to assess the effects of the prototype steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, dexamethasone (DEX) and diclofenac (DIC), on epithelial cells undergoing PCO-like changes. Such drugs are widely used at the time of cataract surgery. TGFbeta2 and FGF-2 were added sequentially and explants were cultured for up to 30 days, with o

Zwitterionic modified and freeze-thaw reinforced foldable hydrogel as intraocular lens for posterior capsule opacification prevention.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a predominant postoperative complication, often leading to visual impairment due to the aberrant proliferation and adhesion of lens epithelial cells (LECs) and protein precipitates subsequent to intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. To address this clinical issue, a foldable and antifouling sharp-edged IOL implant based on naturally-derived cellulose hydrogel is synthesized. The mechanical strength and transparency of the hydrogel is enhanced via repeated freeze-thaw (FT) cycles. The incorporated zwitterionic modifications can remarkably prevent the inci
