This randomized controlled trial examined the effects of combined sensory and strength training (SST) on postural balance and working memory in children with dyslexia. Twenty-nine dyslexic children (six females/23 males; mean age: 9.79 ± 1.44 years) were assigned to three groups: a SST group, a strength training group, and a control group. The intervention lasted 6 weeks, comprising three sessions per week, with each session lasting 45-60 min. Preassessment and postassessments included measures of postural balance and working memory, with muscle strength evaluated as a secondary outcome. After

BACKGROUND: Jaw clenching improves dynamic reactive balance on an oscillating platform during forward acceleration and is associated with decreased mean sway speed of different body regions.
OBJECTIVE: It is suggested that jaw clenching as a concurrent muscle activity facilitates human motor excitability, increasing the neural drive to distal muscles. The underlying mechanism behind this phenomenon was studied based on leg and trunk muscle activity (iEMG) and co-contraction ratio (CCR).
METHODS: Forty-eight physically active and healthy adults were assigned to three groups, performing three

Mechanisms behind compromised balance control in people with transtibial amputation need to be further explored, as currently little is known specifically about postural control strategies in people with traumatic transtibial amputation (tTTA). The aim of this study is to assess automatic and voluntary postural control strategies in individuals with unilateral tTTA compared to those in control subjects and to define the effect of balance-related factors on these strategies. Automatic posture reactions and volitional motion toward given direction using standardized posturographic protocols (Neu

PURPOSE: To evaluate balance in children with lower limb involvement due to juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).
METHODS: Twenty-five children with JIA manifesting lower extremity arthritis within the previous year and 36 children who were healthy (aged 8-18 years) were assessed by using the Biodex Balance System (BBS) (Biodex, Shirley, New York). Single-leg static balance (BBS level 12) and bilateral static and dynamic balance (BBS levels 2 and 7) were measured. Lower extremity strength, disease activity, function, and pain were also assessed.
RESULTS: : Ten subjects with JIA (40%) could no

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive balance assessment is essential for evaluating balance deficiencies, particularly in individuals with limited mobility and increased fall risk. However, clinical balance assessments often rely on subjective scoring and simplified models that may not capture the full dynamics of human postural control. Additionally, center of pressure (COP)-based metrics and inverted pendulum models offer limited insight into whole-body balance ability. Balance regions (BRs) offer a more holistic approach by quantifying balanced center of mass (COM) states. Previously, BRs were used to

BACKGROUND: Sleep is crucial for optimal sensorimotor integration, a fundamental process enabling coordinated motor responses to sensory inputs. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms through which acute sleep deprivation impairs this integration remain incompletely understood. This study investigates the impact of acute sleep deprivation on postural balance and elucidates the underlying multilayered mechanisms using a combination of behavioral, psychophysiological, and neuroimaging indicators.
METHODS: Twenty-five healthy young participants underwent 36 h of total sleep deprivation. Befo

BACKGROUND: Maintaining static balance is relevant and common in everyday life and it depends on a correct intersegmental coordination. A change or reduction in postural capacity has been linked to increased risk of falls. People with Parkinson's disease (pwPD) experience motor symptoms affecting the maintenance of a stable posture. The aim of the study is to understand the intersegmental changes in postural sway and to apply a trend change analysis to uncover different movement strategies between pwPD and healthy adults.
METHODS: In total, 61 healthy participants, 40 young (YO), 21 old parti

This study characterizes the effects of a postural training program on balance and muscle control strategies in a virtual reality (VR) environment. The Robotic Upright Stand Trainer (RobUST), which applies perturbative forces on the trunk and assistive forces on the pelvis, was used to deliver perturbation-based balance training (PBT) in a sample of 10 healthy participants. The VR task consisted of catching, aiming, and throwing a ball at a target. All participants received trunk perturbations during the VR task with forces tailored to the participant's maximum tolerance. A subgroup of these p

BACKGROUND: Impaired control of balance and coordinated reactions are a primary deficit of cerebellar dysfunction. As compared to other neurological patients with balance impairments, there has been little research assessing the characteristics of compensatory responses associated with falls in patients with cerebellar disease (CD).
RESEARCH QUESTION: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of cerebellar disease on compensatory balance control in response to postural perturbation. Do CD patients increase the number of steps when responding to instability because of inappropriate init

Intensity of balance exercises used to reduce fall risk is often poorly quantified. The study aimed to test whether balance difficulty can be rated during gait perturbations against balance difficulty during gait without perturbation, using the stabilizing/destabilizing forces. These forces represent the difficulty to maintain balance as the theoretical forces necessary to cancel body velocity and to set the body into an unstable posture, respectively. Ten healthy subjects walked on a split-belt treadmill, that also generated perturbations. Kinetic and kinematic data were collected during gait

BACKGROUND: In Duchenne muscular dystrophy, functional deficits seem to arise from body misalignment, deconditioning, and obesity secondary to weakness and immobility. The question remains about the effects of postural deviations on the functional balance of these children.
OBJECTIVES: To identify and quantify postural deviations in children with DMD in comparison to non-affected children (eutrophic and overweight/obese), exploring relationships between posture and function.
METHOD: This case-control study evaluated 29 participants aged 6 to 11 years: 10 DMD (DG), 10 eutrophic (EG), and 9 ov

The lateral ligament complex of the ankle is a frequently injured structure in sports and recreational activities, which often results in chronic ankle instability (CAI). Balance exercise training has become a common component of clinical rehabilitation for CAI to address postural deficits. To determine the effect of balance training on postural stability, this critically appraised topic presents a summary and analysis of 4 relevant studies that address the effectiveness of balance training in subjects with CAI. Information about the methods and sources used in the article is provided. The fin

UNLABELLED: Most hip fractures occur in subjects without osteoporosis and are associated with a fall. Conventional menopausal hormone therapy (HT) improves postural balance, which might explain the rapid reduction in hip fracture risk. It is unclear whether tibolone improves postural balance, which might determine its effects on peripheral fracture risk.
OBJECTIVE: To study the short-term effects of low-dose tibolone therapy on postural balance in elderly women.
METHODS: Eighty healthy women (70 evaluable), aged 60 years or more, were recruited through advertising in the local media. They we

BACKGROUND: The major disadvantage of current clinical tests that screen for balance disorders is a reliance on an examiner's subjective assessment of equilibrium control. To overcome this disadvantage we investigated, using quantified measures of trunk sway, age-related differences of normal subjects for commonly used clinical balance tests.
METHODS: Three age groups were tested: young (15-25 years; n = 48), middle-aged (45-55 years; n = 50) and elderly (65-75 years; n = 49). Each subject performed a series of fourteen tasks similar to those included in the Tinetti and Clinical Test of Senso

In the light of studies published in the last ten years, we have suspected a differential influence of the sides of hemispheric cerebral lesions on posture and balance. A study was aimed at verifying this hypothesis, the method of which being original because many possible confounding factors such as age, sex as well as topography and size of the brain lesion have been taken into account in the statistical analysis. Inclusion criteria were: right-handed patients, first stroke, no previous disease which might have affected balance. Their postural abilities (ranging from 0 to 36) were assessed 9

Alteration of posturo-respiratory coupling (PRC) may precede postural imbalance in patients with chronic respiratory disease. PRC assessment would be appropriate for early detection of respiratory-related postural dysfunction. PRC may be evaluated by respiratory emergence (REm), the proportion of postural oscillations attributed to breathing activity; assessed by motion analysis) as measured from the displacement of the center of pressure (CoP) (measured with a force platform). To propose a simplified method of PRC assessment (using motion capture only), we hypothesized that the REm can approp
