BACKGROUND: This cross-sectional study estimated the prevalence of contraceptive methods and investigated whether abortion rates influence contraceptive behaviour among injection drug-using (IDU) women in St Petersburg, Russia.
METHODOLOGY: A self-administered questionnaire of behaviour in the last 3 months was applied to a convenient sample of IDU women.
RESULTS: Of 80 sexually active participants, 67% had had an abortion. No participant reported using hormonal contraceptives or intrauterine devices (IUDs). The only valid method of contraception used was condoms, which was reported by half

Unplanned pregnancy is one of the most difficult life experiences for young women. Women are often confused and seek help and support. When the problem occurs, a woman has three choices: parenting the baby, planning for adoption, or terminating the pregnancy. Choosing one of these three options is often difficult. This study aimed to identify the factors (variables) influencing women's decision making when choosing the options available to them. The study was conducted in five shelters and low-income communities in the Bangkok area. Data were collected for five months, November 2003 to March 2

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine prospectively whether unplanned pregnancies are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes among users of natural family planning.
METHODS: Women who became pregnant while using natural family planning were identified in five centers worldwide: there were 373 unplanned and 367 planned pregnancies in this cohort. The subjects were followed up at 16 and 32 weeks' gestation and after delivery. The risks of spontaneous abortion, low birth-weight, and preterm birth were estimated after adjustment by logistic regression.
RESULTS: The women wit

BACKGROUND: Satralizumab is effective for relapse prevention in AQP4-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), but its safety during pregnancy has not been established. While several cases have reported continued satralizumab use in planned pregnancies, the management of unplanned pregnancy in patients already on satralizumab remains undefined.
CASES: We report two AQP4-positive NMOSD patients (aged 32 and 21 years) who conceived unexpectedly during satralizumab maintenance therapy (8 and 7 months of treatment, respectively). Upon pregnancy confirmation, satralizumab was discon

OBJECTIVE: To understand the risk of unplanned hysterectomy (UH) in pregnant women better in association with maternal sociodemographic characteristics, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, and current pregnancy complications.
DESIGN: Using Florida birth data from 2005 to 2014, we investigated the possible interactions between known risk factors of having UH, including maternal sociodemographic characteristics, maternal medical history, and other pregnancy complications. Logistic regression models were constructed. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were reported.

OBJECTIVES: For people with cerebral palsy (CP), the transition from adolescence to adulthood can be particularly difficult. There are misperceptions surrounding the sexuality of people with disabilities; CP is no exception. These may affect discussions with health care providers (HCPs).
METHODS: This study is part of an online international survey examining reproductive health outcomes of people with CP, designed according to the principles of person-centred research. Multiple recruitment techniques were used, including partnering with disability organizations to conduct snowball and peer re

OBJECTIVE: To study if childhood emotional, physical and sexual abuse are determinants for having an unplanned pregnancy, if the categories of abuse interact, and if a potential bias due to the selection of the participants (collider stratification bias) could explain the effect of childhood abuse.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study.
SETTING: The study is based on the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and uses data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway.
SAMPLE: Women participating in the MoBa for the first time, ≥18 years of age who responded to questions regarding childhood a

This comparative cross-sectional study conducted at the "Pius Brinzeu" healthcare center in Timisoara explored the differential impacts of pregnancy planning status on sexual function, body image, and relationship satisfaction among pregnant women. Employing the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAQ), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the study analyzed responses from 107 participants divided into groups of planned (n = 59, mean age 28.5 ± 5.2) and unplanned (n = 48, mean age 27.3 ± 4.8) pregnancies. In the first trimester, unplanned

BACKGROUND: With improved operative techniques pregnancy rates have been rising in patients with anomalies of the extrophy-epispadias-complex, including also female patients with bladder extrophy. Specific risks around pregnancy need to be addressed sufficiently beforehand.
CASE PRESENTATION: An unplanned pregnancy was detected at 34 weeks in a 39-year old White female patient with former complex bladder extrophy. Decades after her operation she had not received any follow-up medical care and believed to be unable to conceive due to her anomaly. Thus no contraceptive matters were taken. The p

In South Africa, the high rate of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among young people and unplanned pregnancies remains a concern. Using a qualitative approach, this study aimed to explore how young people between 18 and 24 years old perceive the risk of unplanned pregnancy and HIV, and how they give priority to and act to prevent both concerns. Fifty-four young people were recruited from three provinces in South Africa: KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, and Gauteng. Data collection took place between May and June in 2016. All data collection was carried out in person using a standardis

BACKGROUND: Increased fertility rates in HIV-infected women receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) have been attributed to improved immunological function; it is unknown to what extent the rise in pregnancy rates is due to unintended pregnancies.
METHODS: Non-pregnant women ages 18-35 from four public-sector ART clinics in Johannesburg, South Africa, were enrolled into a prospective cohort and followed from August 2009-March 2011. Fertility intentions, contraception and pregnancy status were measured longitudinally at participants' routine ART clinic visits.
FINDINGS: Of the 850 women enroll

OBJECTIVES: Rigorous measurement of pregnancy preferences is needed to address reproductive health needs. The London Measure of Unplanned Pregnancy (LMUP), developed in the UK, has been adapted for low-income countries. Psychometric properties of LMUP items remain uncertain in contexts with limited access to and use of health services.
STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study examines the six-item LMUP's psychometric properties among a nationally representative sample of 2855 pregnant and postpartum women in Ethiopia. Principal components analysis (PCA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA)

Family planning and contraceptive utilization can have significant effects in reducing unplanned pregnancies and improving maternal and child health indicators. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study analyzing survey response data within six sub-locations of Migori County, Kenya in 2018 and 2019. We utilize this survey data to estimate both the prevalence of contraceptive uptake and unwanted pregnancies in the study populations, and to examine the potential role that different factors play in meeting related family planning targets. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and multi

Female sex workers (FSWs) were recruited from known hotspots in Kigali, Rwanda, and offered free, anonymous human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) counseling and testing, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). From September 2012 to March 2015, 1168 FSWs sought services, including 587 (50%) who were HIV-positive. More than 90% had previously tested for HIV, and 26% who reported previously testing negative had seroconverted. Of the 349 who already knew their HIV-positive status, 74% were on antiretroviral treatment. The pre

Although teen pregnancy and birth rates have declined over the decades, all adolescentpopulations are at risk. Disparities among adolescent pregnancies still exist, including increased risk and rates of unplanned pregnancy among vulnerable adolescents, including those with a mental health diagnosis.Adolescent girls with mental health disorders are notably at higher risk and are three timesmore likely to become pregnant than those without a mental illness. Adolescents who have experienced trauma and have a mental health diagnosis are much more likely to engage in high-risk sexual activity, to n

We present a case of a woman with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who experienced disease progression during treatment with the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) osimertinib due to an unplanned pregnancy. Given the risk of tumor progression, the patient underwent an artificial abortion. However, disease deterioration occurred shortly after termination of the pregnancy, with severe chest pain, increased dyspnea, and pleural effusion. After positive rescue measures, including emergency thoracic drainage, thoracentesis, and oxygen uptake, her symptoms impr

Reproductive coercion has been hypothesized as a cause of unprotected sex and unplanned pregnancies, but research has focused on a narrow set of potential sources of reproductive coercion. We identified and evaluated eight potential sources of reproductive coercion from the Theory of Gender and Power including economic inequality between adolescent girls and their boyfriends, cohabitation, and age differences. The sample comprised sexually active African-American female adolescents, ages 15-21. At baseline (n = 715), 6 months (n = 607), and 12 months (n = 605), participants completed a 40-min

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) predominantly affects women and has a median age at onset of 40 years, meaning that many patients are of childbearing age. However, management of pregnant women with NMOSD remains extremely challenging. We report two patients with NMOSD who had unplanned pregnancies during inebilizumab (INE) treatment and successful deliveries. These cases provide preliminary clinical information regarding maternal disease control and pregnancy outcomes following INE exposure.
