Association of adiposity indices with prehypertension among Chinese adults: A cross-sectional study.

The association of adiposity indices with prehypertension remains unclear in the Chinese non-hypertensive population. This study aimed to compare the association of adiposity indices, including waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio, body roundness index (BRI), a body shape index (ABSI), and conicity index (CI), and prehypertension in the Chinese population. We recruited 61 475 participants from a population-based screening project in Guangdong province, China. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to detect the association between the six adiposity indices and prehyper

Neurotransmitter Switching Coupled to β-Adrenergic Signaling in Sympathetic Neurons in Prehypertensive States.

Single or combinatorial administration of β-blockers is a mainstay treatment strategy for conditions caused by sympathetic overactivity. Conventional wisdom suggests that the main beneficial effect of β-blockers includes resensitization and restoration of β1-adrenergic signaling pathways in the myocardium, improvements in cardiomyocyte contractility, and reversal of ventricular sensitization. However, emerging evidence indicates that another beneficial effect of β-blockers in disease may reside in sympathetic neurons. We investigated whether β-adrenoceptors are present on postganglionic sympat

Impaired beta-adrenergic hyperpolarization in arteries from prehypertensive spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Stimulation of beta-adrenoceptors leads to vascular smooth muscle hyperpolarization, presumably through the beta-adrenoceptors/Gs protein/adenylate cyclase/ATP-sensitive K(+)-channels (KATP) signaling cascade, which may play an important role in the sympathetic control of membrane potential. beta-Adrenoceptor-mediated hyperpolarization has been shown to be impaired in the established stage of experimental hypertension. The present study tested the hypothesis that beta-adrenergic hyperpolarization may be defective before the development of hypertension in some forms of genetic hypertension. We

Clinical significance of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as a risk factor for prehypertension.

Previous epidemiologic studies have shown the clinical association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, there is only limited information about the effect of NAFLD on the development of hypertension. Accordingly, we investigated the clinical association between NAFLD and prehypertension. A prospective cohort study was conducted on the 11,350 Korean men without prehypertension for 5 yr. The incidences of prehypertension were evaluated, and Cox proportional hazard model was used to measure the hazard ratios (HRs) for the development of preh

Hypertension and prehypertension among adolescents attending secondary schools in urban area of South-East, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: in the past, the need for regular blood pressure screening in children was doubtful, and the main reason against it is that hypertension is an adult illness and there is no evidence that screening healthy children for hypertension was worthwhile. We did this study to determine the prevalence of hypertension and prehypertension as well as some risk factors for hypertension among secondary school adolescents in an urban area of the South-East, Nigeria. METHODS: this was a cross-sectional study of 984 adolescents aged 10-19 years in secondary schools in Awka South Local Government

Association of prehypertension and hyperhomocysteinemia with subclinical atherosclerosis in asymptomatic Chinese: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Comorbid hypertension and hyperhomocysteinemia is an important risk factor for carotid atherosclerotic plaque formation. We put forward the hypothesis that the subjects with comorbid prehypertension and hyperhomocysteinemia also had an increased risk of subclinical atherosclerosis, using carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) as the marker of the atherosclerotic process. METHODS: A total of 4102 asymptomatic Chinese subjects aged 18-60 years were divided into four groups according to blood pressure (BP) and homocysteine (HCY) level: the control group without prehypertension or hype

Influence of dietary iron intake restriction on the development of hypertension in weanling prehypertensive rats.

Hypertension is a major public health problem leading to death. To reduce the morbidity and mortality in patients with hypertension, it is crucial to develop a novel strategy for prevention of hypertension. We have currently reported an attempt at dietary iron intake restriction as non-pharmacological treatment of hypertension in patients with hypertension. However, it remains fully unknown whether dietary iron restriction prevents the development of hypertension. We investigated the influence of dietary iron restriction on the development of hypertension in weanling pre-hypertensive model rat

Enhanced presynaptic beta 2-adrenoceptor-mediated facilitation of the pressor responses in the prehypertensive SHR.

The effects of beta-adrenoceptor agonists and antagonists on pressor responses of the isolated perfused mesenteric arteries to periarterial nerve stimulation (PNS) in the prehypertensive 4-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and the age-matched Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) were examined. The systolic arterial blood pressure (SBP) of SHR and WKY were not significantly different at this young age. The pressor responses of the mesenteric arteries to PNS at various stimulating frequencies, however, were significantly greater in SHR than WKY. Cocaine, isoproterenol (a nonselective beta-adrenoc

Diurnal blood pressure pattern and development of prehypertension or hypertension in young adults: the CARDIA study.

Nondippers (people whose sleep systolic blood pressure [SBP] fails to decrease >10% from daytime SBP) have increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of nondipping in younger adults has not been well studied, nor has its value for predicting hypertension. We examined the prevalence of nondipping in a substudy of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study. We used Cox regression to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) conferred by nondipping for incident prehypertension or hypertension (preHTN/HTN) over 15 years.
