Protective role of hepatic non-parenchymal cells against drug-induced hepatocyte toxicity using perfluoropolyether-based microfluidic devices.

The role of hepatic non-parenchymal cells (NPCs) in drug-induced liver injury has been controversial. Utilizing our previously developed perfluoropolyether-based microfluidic devices-characterized by significantly reduced chemical absorption compared to conventional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-we investigated the interactions between primary hepatocytes (PCs) and NPCs under physiologically relevant conditions. When exposed to coumarin or acetaminophen, PCs underwent severe cytotoxicity and showed glutathione (GSH) depletion. Notably, co-culture with NPCs restored drug-induced cytotoxicity and

Shock attenuation of various protective devices for prevention of fall-related injuries of the forearm/hand complex.

BACKGROUND: Attenuation of the peak impact force is essential in any protective devices for prevention of fall-related injuries. HYPOTHESIS: Common wrist guards have limited effectiveness because of the multifaceted nature of wrist injury mechanisms, and other modalities may provide enhanced shock-absorbing functions. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: A free-fall device was constructed using a mechanical surrogate to simulate falling impact. At 4 different falling heights, 5 different hand conditions were tested: bare hand, a generic-brand wrist guard, a Sorbothane glove,

Low body mass index and jaw movement are protective of hearing in users of personal listening devices.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Sound pressure level delivered through personal listening devices (PLDs) and reaching the ear drum might be affected by body size and jaw movements. This study aimed to investigate whether jaw movement and/or smaller body mass index (BMI) resulted in decrease of sound pressure level within the ear canals of PLD users via an earbud earphone. STUDY DESIGN: Case series. METHODS: Forty-five normal-hearing subjects (16 males; mean age, 23.3 years) participated in this study. A probe-microphone system was used to measure sound pressure level in the external ear canal with mu

Characterization of Protection Mechanisms to Blast Overpressure for Personal Hearing Protection Devices - Biomechanical Measurement and Computational Modeling.

Hearing damage induced by blast exposure is a common injury in military personnel involved in most operation activities. Personal hearing protection devices such as earplugs come as a standard issue for Service members; however, it is not clear how to accurately evaluate the protection mechanisms of different hearing protection devices for blast overpressures (BOP). This paper reports a recent study on characterization of earplugs' protective function to BOP using human cadaver ears and 3D finite element (FE) model of the human ear. The cadaver ear mounted with pressure sensors near the eardru

Safety climate and use of personal protective equipment and safety medical devices among home care and hospice nurses.

Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety medical devices is mandated for healthcare workers to reduce the risk of infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) from exposure to patients' blood. Research has shown that a strong safety climate may promote increased use of PPE. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the association between safety climate and use of PPE among homecare/hospice nurses in North Carolina. To this end, a mail survey was conducted in 2006. The response rate, adjusted on the assumption

Holistic evaluation of inlet protection devices for sediment control on construction sites.

To address the deleterious impacts of excess soil erosion from the construction sites, the United States Clean Water Act requires that erosion and sediment control measures (ESCs) be implemented on construction projects disturbing more than 0.4 ha. Inlet protection devices (IPDs) are a common ESC utilized on construction projects to reduce the amount of sediment entering storm sewers. In Ohio, regulatory agencies use approved, non-proprietary IPDs made from commonly available materials (e.g., silt fence, geotextile, lumber, and aggregate) to mitigate sediment on construction projects; however,

Embolic protection devices for carotid artery stenting: A network meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is an alternative treatment option for patients at high risk for carotid endarterectomy (CEA) but has been correlated with increased risk for distal embolization and periprocedural stroke despite the use of adjunctive embolic protection devices (EPD). This study compared four types of EPDs and their intra and periprocedural related complications. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted in PubMed/Medline to identify studies that investigated the outcomes of CAS with adjuvant use of EPDs, including Proximal Balloon (PB), Distal Filt

Use of a Dual-Filter Embolic Protection Device for Brachiocephalic Artery Stenting.

A 77-year-old female with peripheral artery disease underwent brachiocephalic artery stenting for right upper extremity claudication. Given a very high atherosclerotic burden seen on CT, a dual-filter embolic protection device (Sentinel, Boston Scientific) was deployed from the right radial artery to protect the right common carotid and subclavian arteries, and therefore the vertebral artery, during the stenting procedure. This case report demonstrates a novel use of this dual-filter device to provide both carotid and vertebral artery embolic protection during brachiocephalic artery interventi

Carotid Artery Angioplasty and Stenting Without Distal Embolic Protection Devices.

BACKGROUND: Embolic protection devices are used during carotid artery stenting procedures to reduce risk of distal embolization. Although this is a standard procedural recommendation, no studies have shown superiority of these devices over unprotected stenting procedures. OBJECTIVE: To assess the periprocedural outcome and durability of carotid artery stenting without embolic protection devices and poststent angioplasty. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of 174 carotid angioplasty stent procedures performed at our institution. One hundred sixty-six patients underwent angiopl

The use of a distal occlusion balloon protection device in acute coronary syndrome.

We report our early experience in using the PercuSurge GuardWire Plus system as a distal protection device in patients with acute coronary syndrome and acute myocardial infarction. Forty-three patients received percutaneous coronary intervention with the GuardWire Plus system. Thirteen had unstable angina, five had non-Q myocardial infarction and 25 had ST segment elevation myocardial infarction. Forty-one target lesions were in native coronary vessels and two were in saphenous vein grafts. Total occlusion occurred in 18 patients. The mean occlusion time by the distal protective balloon was 26

An investigation into the effect of protective devices on the dose to radiosensitive organs in the head and neck.

A series of experiments were performed to determine the dose reduction afforded to radiosensitive organs in the head and neck by various protective devices. These included spectacles with plastic, standard glass, photochromic and lead-glass lenses, a thyroid collar and a lead-acrylic face mask. The measurements were performed using an anthropomorphic phantom loaded with lithium fluoride thermoluminescent dosemeters, in conditions realistic of clinical practice. Irradiations were performed using scattered radiation produced by a pelvic phantom, for X-ray beams generated at 80 kVp and 110 KVp. I

Periprocedural outcomes of embolic protection device use in carotid artery stenting.

BACKGROUND: Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is frequently used in the management of carotid artery stenosis. Although the use of embolic protection devices (EPDs) is common, the association with lower mortality has been questioned. We aimed to assess the association between CAS with and without EPD and periprocedural stroke and mortality. METHODS: We included patients from the nationwide Vascular Quality Initiative registry who underwent CAS between 2015 and 2019. Patients undergoing transcarotid artery revascularization were excluded. Outcomes after CAS with either no EPD attempted or failed v
