Reasons for admission and their implications for the nature of acute inpatient psychiatric nursing.

The purpose of acute inpatient psychiatric care, and nurses' role within that, are in need of clarification and restatement in order to provide a framework for practice, education, research and development. Inpatient psychiatry has suffered from a paucity of research in recent years. In addition, being a complex system, involving multiple professions with differing ideologies, means that widely accepted succinct descriptions of its purpose are hard to achieve. Yet such a framework is essential to support positive attitudes to patients and for good staff-management relationships. Using an obliq

The psychiatric liaison nurse in the general hospital: three models of practice.

The creation and implementation of the role of the psychiatric liaison nurse in three general hospitals are described. The historical evolution and theoretical bases of the role are reviewed, as well as the specific reasons for creation of such a role in each of the three hospitals. Similarities in the implementation of the role of liaison nurse in the three hospitals are discussed.

Psilocybin: A brief overview for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners.

The use of psychedelics, such as psilocybin, has emerged in recent literature as a novel therapeutic treatment for various psychiatric disorders, including substance use, depression, and anxiety. While international and domestic trials are currently underway, there is data demonstrating both the relative safety and potential efficacy of psilocybin. Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners are essential mental health providers that may be at the forefront of delivering these new treatment modalities. Therefore, they must be aware of the psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic tenets of

Violence against psychiatric nurses: sensitive research as science and intervention.

Psychiatric nurses are frequent victims of workplace violence, much of which is perpetrated by patients. In a review of literature on prevalence, perpetrators, and impact of violence on psychiatric nurses, we note that workplace violence is a virtually normative experience for the nurse, rather than a rare occurrence. Verbal violence and sexual harassment, like physical violence, are common experiences; in contrast to physical violence, these are often initiated by co-workers. The emotional impact of violence on psychiatric nurses is studied less often than frequency of exposure; we discuss hy

Student nurses' experience of interaction with culturally diverse psychiatric patients.

A study of Baccalaureate nursing students was conducted to explore and describe undergraduate nursing students' experience of interaction with culturally diverse psychiatric patients. Thirty-seven nursing students participated in this research project. Sixteen of the students came from a predominantly black university and the other twenty-one students came from a predominantly white university. Both universities are situated in the same city and allocate their nursing students to the same psychiatric hospital for practical experience. The student nurses reported having experienced both positiv

Psychiatric nurses' work experiences in non-psychiatric wards in light of their specialized competencies: a qualitative content analysis.

BACKGROUND: As mental health professionals, psychiatric nurses have the knowledge and skills to play a key role in responding to the psychological needs of physically ill patients. However, their presence in non-psychiatric wards is often accompanied by role ambiguity and limited use of specialized competencies. The aim of this study is to explain the experiences of psychiatric nurses concerning the role of their specialized competencies on their work experiences in non-psychiatric wards. METHOD: This qualitative study employed a conventional content analysis approach. Data were collected bet

Perceived Nursing Care, Nurse-Patient Interaction and Comfort among Psychiatric Inpatients: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Comfort is a significant result of mental nursing care, intricately linked to the quality of nurse-patient interactions and patients' perceptions of nursing care. This study aimed to examine whether perceived nursing care and nurse-patient interaction predict general comfort levels among psychiatric inpatients. A cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study was performed including 67 psychiatric inpatients at a state hospital from January to October 2025. Data were gathered utilizing a Sociodemographic Information Form, the Short General Comfort Questionnaire, the Patient Perception o

Integrating Psychiatric, Psychotherapeutic, and Nursing Care in Intranasal Esketamine for Treatment-Resistant Depression.

Background/Objectives: Intranasal esketamine has emerged as an effective treatment for patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD), providing rapid symptom relief when conventional antidepressant strategies fail. While its pharmacological efficacy has been demonstrated in randomized controlled trials, less attention has been paid to the organizational, relational, and multidisciplinary aspects that influence its real-world implementation and clinical effectiveness. While practical recommendations for intranasal esketamine services exist, an implementation-ready framework integrating psy

Therapeutic Communication as Autobiographical Memory Scaffolding: Bridging Developmental Science and Psychiatric Nursing Practice.

OBJECTIVE: To introduce the developmental and cross-cultural science of autobiographical memory to psychiatric nursing and argue that therapeutic communication functions as autobiographical memory scaffolding. METHODS: This discussion article integrates three fields within the literature: elaborative reminiscing and autobiographical memory development (developmental psychology), overgeneral autobiographical memory (clinical psychology), and cultural variation in autobiographical recall (cross-cultural research). It applies the integration to psychiatric nursing assessment and intervention. R

Ethical experiences of nursing students in inpatient psychiatric units: The autonomy-paternalism tension.

Practices such as involuntary admission, compulsory treatment, and physical restraint further intensify this tension, while nursing students are more vulnerable to these ethical dilemmas because of their limited clinical experience.AimThis study aimed to describe nursing students' ethical experiences regarding the autonomy-paternalism tension in inpatient psychiatric units.Research designA qualitative d
