Psychosocial functioning in children with neurodevelopmental disorders and externalizing behavior problems.

PURPOSE: This study examines psychosocial functioning in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and/or externalizing behavior problems (EBPs) as compared to children with neither condition. METHODS: The longitudinal sample, drawn from the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, included children who were 6 to 9 years old in Cycle 1 who were followed-up biennially in Cycles 2 and 3 (N = 3476). The associations between NDDs and/or EBPs, child and family socio-demographic characteristics and parenting behaviors (consistency and ineffective parenting), were examine

Sleep impairment, mood symptoms, and psychosocial functioning in adolescent bipolar disorder.

Few empirical studies have investigated the role of sleep impairment in the course of adolescent bipolar spectrum disorders (BSD). The present study examined the longitudinal associations between sleep disruption, mood symptom severity, and psychosocial functioning in a 2-year follow-up of patients with adolescent BSD. Fifty-three adolescents with BSD (mean [S.D.] age: 14.6 [1.6]) participated in a two-site randomized trial of family focused treatment for adolescents (FFT-A) or enhanced care, a briefer psychoeducational treatment; both treatments were administered with pharmacotherapy. The relation between mood, cognition and psychosocial functioning in psychiatric disorders.

Impairments in cognitive performance and inability to function in everyday life situations are present, in various degrees, in many severe mental illnesses, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Persistent mood symptoms (e.g., depression and mania) are associated with functional deficits in major depression and bipolar disorder, but also in conditions where mood symptoms are not the primary markers of the illness, such as in schizophrenia. While mood symptoms impact cognitive performance, both mood symptoms and cognitive deficits have a significant - and to

Psychosocial functioning in children and adolescents with gastrointestinal complaints and disorders.

The current study examined the prevalence and presentation of psychosocial symptoms in pediatric patients and their parents presenting for first time appointments at a gastroenterology (GI) clinic compared to healthy controls (HC). One hundred GI patients, aged 8-17 years, and their mothers were compared to 100 age- and gender-matched HC on measures of child and parental behavioral/psychosocial functioning, depression, and anxiety. Results revealed significant correlations between mother- and child-reported internalizing behaviors and psychological symptoms. Significant group differences were

Optimism, social support and psychosocial functioning among women with breast cancer.

Personality, psychosocial, demographic and medical variables have been identified as correlates of adjustment to breast cancer and quality of life (QoL). Most studies have examined relationships between personality, social support and adjustment to cancer in predominantly middle-class Caucasian samples, thus limiting the generalizability of their findings. Eighty-one female outpatients at a medical oncology breast clinic in a county general hospital serving primarily indigent Hispanic and African-American patients completed measures assessing demographic and medical information, health-related

Cognitive and psychosocial functioning of patients with congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

Mental retardation (MR) is generally considered one of the main complications of congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI). However, psychometric studies of NDI patients are scarce and outdated. In the present study, 17 male NDI patients underwent psychological evaluation. Total intelligence quotient of 14 patients was within (n = 13) or above (n = 1) the normal range, 1 patient had an intelligence score between -1 and -2 standard deviations (S.D.) and 2 young patients had a general cognitive index more than 2 S.D. below the norm. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder criteria were me

Psychosocial functioning and friendship quality among school-aged pediatric brain tumor survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric brain tumor survivors (PBTS) experience social difficulties, including fewer friendships. The presence or absence of a best friend may meaningfully reflect broader functioning. This study compared the psychosocial functioning of PBTS with and without best friends. METHODS: PBTS (N = 65; 55.4% female; 84.2% White; Mage= 10.12 ± 1.32; range 8-12) completed measures of psychosocial functioning. Parents completed measures of parenting practices. PBTS were asked to identify a best friend and describe their friendship. Survivor-reported best friends were contacted and reported

Cannabis Use Associations with Adverse Psychosocial Functioning among North American College Students.

Introduction: Adolescent-onset cannabis use (CU) (before age 18) is associated with multiple adverse psychosocial outcomes, but rates of CU peak between the ages of 18 and 22, coinciding with college matriculation. Whether CU among college-enrolled young adults is associated with similar psychosocial outcomes is poorly understood. In the present study, we examined relationships between CU and multiple psychosocial outcomes in North American college students. Methods: Data for this report come from N = 40,250 North American college students ages 18-to-25 years (mean age = 20.7 years, 69% female

Examining the association between psychosocial functioning and concussion symptom severity in youth.

OBJECTIVE: Guidelines recommend examining psychosocial variables as contributors to postconcussive symptoms. However, few studies examined this relation in a clinic-referred sample and fewer accounted for parent perspective, limiting practitioners implementation of this guidance. Therefore, this longitudinal study examined youth and parent-reported psychosocial variables and their association with concussion symptom severity in a clinic-referred sample of youth receiving treatment for concussion. METHODS: Youth (n = 121; mean age = 15.3 years) with a recent concussion and their parents comple

Assessment of Psychosocial Functioning in a Large Cohort of Patients with Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: This study addresses the question of whether psychosocial functioning measured by the Personal and Social Performance (PSP) Scale is related to various psychopathological measures in a cohort of patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: The 'Neuroleptic Strategy Study' (NeSSy) performed at 14 German hospitals between 2010 and 2013 compared two treatment strategies instead of individual drugs. Secondary end-points were the two PSP scales as well as measures of quality of life (SF-36) and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). RESULTS: 149 patients were randomised. There was

Psychological Support, Puberty Suppression, and Psychosocial Functioning in Adolescents with Gender Dysphoria.

INTRODUCTION: Puberty suppression by gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs (GnRHa) is prescribed to relieve the distress associated with pubertal development in adolescents with gender dysphoria (GD) and thereby to provide space for further exploration. However, there are limited longitudinal studies on puberty suppression outcome in GD. Also, studies on the effects of psychological support on its own on GD adolescents' well-being have not been reported. AIM: This study aimed to assess GD adolescents' global functioning after psychological support and puberty suppression. METHODS: Two hundr

Predictors of positive psychosocial functioning of older adults in residential care facilities.

This research examined the contributions of active and passive coping for health problems, and meaning-based coping, to positive psychosocial functioning in a sample of 100 individuals in residential care with a mean age of 83.11 years old. Study participants resided in skilled care, intermediate care, or assisted living facilities. Based on interview data collected on site in participants' residential settings, hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that active and passive coping and meaning-based coping had separate influences on measures of positive psychosocial functioning. Deinstitutionalization and schizophrenia in Finland II: discharged patients and their psychosocial functioning.

Three representative cohorts of schizophrenia patients deinstitutionalized from psychiatric hospitals in 1982, 1986, and 1990 were followed up for 3 years in Finland. Patients of the last cohort were older, more disturbed, and had been ill for a longer time than those discharged at the beginning of the 1980s. Despite this, the mortality of patients deinstitutionalized in 1990 did not increase, and their psychosocial functioning seemed to become even better during the 3-year follow-up period compared with those deinstitutionalized during the previous decade. Patients who had been discharged in
