Ammonia Pyrolysis behind Reflected Shock Waves: Multispecies Measurements and Modeling.

During the oxidation of ammonia (NH3), pyrolysis reactions strongly influence ignition delay times, intermediate radical populations, and production of nitrogen oxides (NOx), none of which are adequately predicted by NH3-containing chemical kinetic models. Moreover, simultaneous, multispecies data sets relevant to NH3 pyrolysis, useful for elucidating areas for model refinement, are generally lacking. Thus, the pyrolysis of 0.1-1.0% NH3 dilute in argon was studied behind reflected shock waves (2100-3500 K, pressures near 1 atm) using a combination of laser absorption diagnostics to measure pos

Carbon dioxide-mediated catalytic pyrolysis of lignin in syngas production.

Kraft lignin (KL), a byproduct of the pulp and paper industry, is commonly combusted as a low-grade fuel. However, its high sulphur content results in the emission of sulphur oxides, which pose environmental hazards. This study explores a sustainable approach for the valorisation of waste KL into syngas via CO2-mediated pyrolysis. In single-stage pyrolysis, CO2 enhanced the thermal decomposition of volatile compounds (VCs) via homogeneous reactions (HRs). These HRs enhanced syngas production, particularly that of carbon monoxide (CO). Catalytic pyrolysis was conducted to further promote the HR

Catalytic pyrolysis of harmful plastic waste to alleviate environmental impacts.

Wax is a detrimental byproduct of plastic waste pyrolysis causing challenges upon its release into the environment owing to persistence and potential toxicity. In this study, the valorization of wax materials through conversion into BTEX (i.e., benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) was achieved via catalytic pyrolysis using zeolite-based catalysts. The potential of two types of waxes, spent wax (SW), derived from the pyrolysis of plastic waste, and commercial paraffin wax (PW), for BTEX generation, was investigated. Using HZSM-5, higher yields of oil (54.9 wt%) and BTEX (18.2 wt%) were p

Fe-POM/attapulgite composite materials: Efficient catalysts for plastic pyrolysis.

This article describes the catalytic cracking of low-density polyethylene over attapulgite clay and iron substituted tungstophosphate/attapulgite clay (Fe-POM/attapulgite) composite materials to evaluate their suitability and performance for recycling of plastic waste into liquid fuel. The prepared catalysts enhanced the yield of liquid fuel (hydrocarbons) produced in cracking process. A maximum yield of 82% liquid oil fraction with a negligible amount of coke was obtained for 50% Fe-POM/attapulgite composite. Whereas, only 68% liquid oil fractions with a large amount of solid black residue wa

Pyrolysis of poly(vinyl chloride) and-electric arc furnacedust mixtures.

An investigation into the pyrolysis kinetics of PVC mixed with electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) was performed. Mixtures of both materials with varying PVC ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3) were prepared and pyrolyzed in a nitrogen atmosphere under dynamic heating conditions at different heating rates (5, 10, 30 and 50 °C/min). The pyrolysis process proceeded through two main decomposition steps; the first step involved the release of HCl which reacted with the metal oxides present in the dust, subsequently forming metal chlorides and water vapor. Benzene was also found to release as detected by TGA-MS. T

Characterization of Aphanomyces invadans isolates using pyrolysis mass spectrometry (PyMS).

Twenty-one isolates of Aphanomyces invadans, the fungal pathogen associated with the Asian fish disease epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS), were compared with other Oomycete fungi in terms of their pyrolysis mass spectrometry (PvMS) profiles. Canonical variate analysis (CVA) of the pyrolysis mass spectra distinguished the Aphanomyces species from a wide scatter of Achlya and Saprolegnia isolates. Further CVA and hierarchal cluster analysis (HCA) separated the Aphanomyces species into two main groups. The first group clustered A. invadans isolates from EUS outbreaks in Thailand, Bangladesh, In

Pyrolysis Regulation of Agarose into Hierarchical Porous Carbon for Supercapacitor Applications.

Fundamental understanding of the biomass pyrolysis process on a molecular level provides important guidelines for designing advanced porous carbon materials. In this study, the effects of KOH and K2CO3 activators on the thermal decomposition of agarose were elucidated using TG-FTIR-GCMS coupling techniques. The results demonstrate that the presence of KOH/K2CO3 shifts the pyrolysis gaseous products from organic fragments to CO2 and H2O, thereby preserving more C-C bonds in the solid phase and facilitating the subsequent aromatization process. Furthermore, compared to using KOH as the sole acti

NO reduction via reburning of MSW pyrolysis volatiles in cement precalciners.

Cement co-processing of municipal solid waste (MSW) has been widely recognized as a promising waste management strategy. Given the substantial NOx emissions from cement industries and the well-established NOx reduction potential of hydrocarbon reburning, this study proposed a novel approach using MSW pyrolysis volatiles as a reburning fuel in cement precalciners, enabling both waste valorization and emission reduction. To confirm the applicability of this approach, the effects of pyrolysis parameters, reaction temperature, gas compositions, and cement raw meal were experimentally investigated

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on the composition of DOM in manure-derived biochar.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the migration and transformation of nutrients and pollutants. Recently, DOM derived from biochar has the potential to determine the application of biochar and has attracted much researcher's attention. However, the effects of pyrolysis temperature on the composition evolution of DOM in manure-derived biochar are still unclear. In this study, DOM solutions extracted from a series of biochars derived from three kinds of manure (chicken, swine and dairy) at six pyrolysis temperature (200-700 °C) were analyzed using UV-Visible, Fourier tran

Pollutant emissions during the pyrolysis and combustion of flexible polyurethane foam.

Thermal decomposition of flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) was studied under nitrogen and air atmospheres at 550°C and 850°C using a laboratory scale reactor to analyse the evolved products. Ammonia, hydrogen cyanide and nitrile compounds were obtained in high yields in pyrolysis at the lower temperature, whereas at 850°C polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other semivolatile compounds, especially compounds containing nitrogen (benzonitrile, aniline, quinolone and indene) were the most abundant products. Different behaviour was observed in the evolution of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins a

Recycling of meat and bone meal animal feed by vacuum pyrolysis.

Due to the recent bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) crisis in the European beef industry, the use of animal-derived products to feed cattle is now severely restricted. Large quantities of waste animal meat and bone meal (MBM), also known as animal flour, have to be safely disposed of or transformed. One disposal option is pyrolysis. Vacuum pyrolysis of an animal flour sample has been performed in a laboratory reactor. The results obtained revealed that vacuum pyrolysis can be an attractive alternative to incineration and cement kilns. The process generated a combustible gas (15.1 wt %), a

Effect of hydrotreating on the pyrolysis oil composition: GC-MS studies.

The processing of waste tires is a significant challenge. The pyrolysis of waste tires offers a sustainable pathway to produce fuels, addressing both waste management and energy recovery challenges. However, due to the presence of a large amount of unsaturated, aromatic hydrocarbons and sulfur compounds, their direct use as fuel is not possible. Catalysts based on Pd, Pt, and other metals are commonly used for the hydrotreating of pyrolysis oil for producing alternative transportation fuels. The effect of hydrotreating with the commercial Pt/Al2O3 and NiMo/Al2O3 catalysts on the chemical compo

Thermal behavior and conversion of agriculture biomass residues by torrefaction and pyrolysis.

Vegetal biomass is an abundant, readily available and easy to collect resource which can be converted into energy and materials. Biomass residues from agriculture and fruit crop activities, grouped in four classes (stalks, hulls, shells, pits), were subjected to thermal analysis and valorization. Thermogravimetry revealed high homogeneity between shells, large heterogeneity of stalks, and presence of thermally sensitive compounds in hulls. The Fisher weight variable selection analysis indicates that the differences in thermal behavior of biomass residues come from the components with specific

Developing a sorptive material of cadmium from pyrolysis of hen manure.

A large amount of manure is generated from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), leading to serious environmental issues and hazardous risks from pathogens, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Therefore, developing an effective method for manure disposal is essential. Thus, in this study, we suggest the use of CO2 in pyrolysis of hen manure (HM) as an effective method to convert the carbon in HM into syngas (especially carbon monoxide (CO)). HM was used and tested as the model compound. From the results of thermo-gravimetric analysis, the decarboxylation of CaCO3 in

Toxicity of char residues produced in the co-pyrolysis of different wastes.

Char residues produced in the co-pyrolysis of different wastes (plastics, pine biomass and used tyres) were characterized using chemical and toxicity assays. One part of the solid chars was submitted to extraction with dichloromethane (DCM) in order to reduce the toxicity of the char residues by removing organic contaminants. The different volatility fractions present in the extracted char (Char A) and in the raw char (Char B) were determined by progressive weight loss combustion. A selected group of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Hg and As) was determined in both chars. The chars were subjecte
