Amifostine (AMF, also known as WR-2721) is the only approved broad-spectrum small-molecule radiation protection agent that can combat hematopoietic damage caused by ionizing radiation and is used as an antitumor adjuvant and cell protector in cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Amifostine is usually injected intravenously before chemotherapy or radiotherapy and has been used in the treatment of head and neck cancer. However, the inconvenient intravenous administration and its toxic side effects such as hypotension have severely limited its further application in clinic. In order to reduce th

Interventional radiology represents subspecialty of radiology, which does not use imaging modalities only for diagnostics, but mostly for therapeutic purposes. Realisation of interventional procedures is done through X-rays, which replaces direct visual control done by interventional radiologist or cardiologist. For the targeted reduction of the radiation exposure, the interventional radiology staff use personal protective equipment. Usually, aprons with lead-equivalent are used, which provide protection for 75% of the radiosensitive organs. As the eye lens and thyroid gland belong to the radi

Exposure to Ionizing radiation (IR) poses a severe threat to human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop potent and safe radioprotective agents for radio-nuclear emergencies. Phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) mediates its cytoprotective signaling against IR by phosphorylating membrane phospholipids to phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5 triphosphate, PIP3, that serve as a docking site for AKT. Phosphatase and Tensin Homolog on chromosome 10 (PTEN) antagonizes PI3K activity by dephosphorylating PIP3, thus suppressing PI3K/AKT signaling that could prevent IR induced cytotoxicity. The c

INTRODUCTION: Radiation is widely used in the treatment of various cancers and in radiological imaging procedures. Ionizing radiation causes adverse effects, leading to decreased quality of life in patients, by releasing free radicals that cause oxidative stress and tissue damage. The sleep-hormone melatonin is a free radical scavenger, and induces several anti-oxidative enzymes. This review investigates the scientific literature on the protective effects of melatonin against exposure to ionizing radiation, and discusses the clinical potential of melatonin as prophylactic treatment against ion

An international workshop brought together a range of stakeholders to consider protection from non-ionizing radiation used in medicine, research and cosmetics. Presentations on specific topics were followed by a general discussion on possible improvements in protection. Participants considered that adherence to science-based, harmonized exposure guidelines to limit exposures for clinical staff and other workers was a key prerequisite to safety in all situations. In addition, to engender an awareness of the risks involved to both the patient as well as the operator, equipment should be operated

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to evaluate CT scanning protocols to determine how best to minimize patient exposure to ionizing radiation while maintaining sufficient image quality to detect pulmonary diseases.
SUBJECT AND METHODS: The CT dose index (CTDI) was determined by scanning an acrylic phantom at various tube current-time products (7.5-115 mAs). Image quality was evaluated by comparing the homogeneity and noise level of CT scans obtained in the acrylic phantom with those obtained in a water-equivalent phantom. The CT scans obtained at various milliampere-second settings in patien

Quantitative standards for protection against exposure to ionizing radiation were first formulated in the 1930s. Since that time, standards have been restated periodically in different radiation units and conceptual frameworks that reflect improved understanding of the biological effects of radiation interactions and their consequences for human health. In the 1970s the expression of protection standards shifted from a dose- to a risk-based approach, with dose limits established to yield risks to radiation workers comparable with those for workers in other "safe" industries. Over the years, ra

In conclusion, it is important to point out that dentistry's contribution to the United States population's radiation exposure is small. Significant improvements have been made, but since dentistry is only one of the contributors to the population's total exposure to radiation, it is important that we make every effort to keep our contribution as low as is practical. Unnecessary exposure should be reduced whenever possible but this should not be used to deter the practitioner from obtaining radiographs when they are clinically indicated. It is very likely that the risk to the United States pop

In this study, we devised a radiation protection tool specifically designed for healthcare professionals and students engaged in cardiac catheterization to easily monitor and evaluate scattered radiation distribution across diverse C-arm angles and arbitrary physician associated staff positions-scrub nurse and technologist positions. In this study, scattered radiation distributions in an angiography room were calculated using the Monte Carlo simulation of particle and heavy ion transport code system (PHITS) code. Four visualizations were performed under different C-arm angles with and without

131I-3-iodobenzylguanidine or 131I-iobenguane (3-(131I) iodobenzylguanidine or 131I-iobenguane [131I-MIBG]) is a radioactive agent that is specifically accumulated in tumor cells such as pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma. Due to its cytotoxic beta ray emitted from 131I, it has been developed as an agent for radioisotope therapy and some researchers have reported its effectiveness. In this study, based on the patients' data from previous clinical trials of 131I-MIBG therapy, we evaluated the radiation safety for public exposure caused by radiation emitted from patients who received 131I-MIBG.

Ultraviolet radiation-induced immunosuppression is thought to play a part in skin cancer. Several studies have indicated that sunscreens that are designed to protect against erythema failed to give comparable protection against ultraviolet radiation-induced immunosuppression. One possible reason for this discrepancy is inadequate ultraviolet A protection. This study evaluated the level of immunoprotection in mice afforded by two broad-spectrum sunscreens with the same sun protection factor, but with different ultraviolet A protection factors. Both sunscreens contained the same ultraviolet B an

Pharmacological test demonstrated that radioprotective activity of indralin occurs by interaction with alpha-adrenoreceptor. Radioprotective effect of indralin decreased by alpha-adrenoblocker, aminazine and theophylline. Normobaric hyperoxia during irradiation reduced radioprotective effect of indralin in doses about ED50. In experiment with mice and rats it was shown that indralin induced acute hypoxia, impaired oxygen consumption and heat production by 30-46%, spleen bloodflow to 26.3% of control level, rectal temperature by 1.5-2 degrees C (mouse). After 30-min indralin raised resistance o

An aqueous solution of 2-propanol was chosen as chemical system for fundamental study of the chemical screening of organic compounds on the responsibility for ionizing radiation. The effect of additives on the yield of acetone was investigated by subjecting this system on gamma-radiolysis. The results show that this system is suitable for the estimation of radiation protecting character of the known radiation protecting agents and compounds which act as a OH scavenger. On the basis of these results, various nitrogen-containing additives having free amino group, guanidine group and hetero-cycli

Synopsis This paper reviews current ideas concerning the reactions involved in sunburn, suntanning, premature ageing and carcinogenesis due to acute or chronic exposure to sunlight. The physiological mechanisms of protection involving melanin pigmentation, thickening of the epidermal horny layer and urocanic acid are briefly discussed. The importance of wavelengths from 290-315 nm (UV-B) for these reactions is emphasized as is the need to investigate further the involvement of longer wavelength (UV-A, 315-400 nm).

The health effects of space radiation, primarily Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs), on humans remain largely unknown, with potential cardiovascular consequences posing a significant threat to astronauts on long-duration spaceflight missions. Currently, there are no established pharmacological countermeasures for GCR exposure. Drug repositioning offers a promising strategy to accelerate pharmaceutical research in space medicine. This study leverages existing bioinformatics techniques to identify and prioritize potential drug candidates associated with proteomic perturbations following simulated GCR e

In daily life, individuals are frequently exposed to various forms of radiation, which, when adhering to safety standards, typically result in relatively minor health effects. However, accidental exposure to radiation levels that exceed these safety standards can lead to significant health consequences. This study focuses on the analysis of radiation-induced damage to the nervous system and the mechanisms of pharmacological protection. The findings indicate that radiation can adversely affect neural structures, memory, and neurobehaviour. A range of pharmacological agents, including traditiona
