Artificial intelligence and machine learning for precision warfarin dosing: a comprehensive narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Warfarin remains one of the most widely used anticoagulants; however, its narrow therapeutic index means that even small dosing deviations can result in thromboembolic or bleeding events, necessitating close monitoring and strict control of the international normalized ratio (INR). MAIN BODY: Although traditional warfarin dosing algorithms incorporating CYP2C9 and VKORC1 genotypes improve upon fixed-dose regimens, they explain less than 50% of dose variability and perform inconsistently across populations. These limitations underscore the need for more adaptive and precise dosing

Changing contributions of emotion and reward information to learning through adolescence.

From childhood to adulthood, individuals' learning and decision-making may be differentially impacted by two salient value signals for adolescents: emotions and rewards. This study superimposed these information sources to assess their independent and joint influences on learning and choice processes. Participants ages 8 to 22 y completed a reinforcement learning task, in which monetary rewards conveyed information integral to making reward-maximizing choices, while emotional expressions conveyed information incidental to this goal. In some conditions, emotion and reward invoked congruent appr

Automatic value learning results in counterproductive human behavior.

Humans are adept at accurately estimating the value of available choices from accumulated experience. However, cognitive processing also incorporates irrelevant information during deliberation, undermining decision accuracy. Here, we show that credit assignment operates automatically, allowing irrelevant action features to acquire value and impair choice behavior. Across four preregistered experiments (N = 504, 158, 195, 319) and a re-analysis of previously published data (N = 50), we examine outcome-irrelevant learning to spatial-motor and visual action features under conditions of explicit i

Double Q-Learning for Intelligent Multi-Drug Scheduling in Cancer Chemotherapy Optimisation.

Chemotherapy scheduling poses a challenging control problem due to the need to suppress tumour growth whilst maintaining systemic toxicity within clinically acceptable limits. This study develops a double Q-learning-based controller for optimising daily dosing of a three-drug regimen consisting of cisplatin, docetaxel and irinotecan. A pharmacokinetics-pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) tumour model with eight resistance states is used as the simulation environment. The controller aims to minimise tumour burden whilst enforcing strict toxicity constraints aligned with clinical dosing guidelines. Simulat

Delayed reward information is underweighted in reinforcement learning with dispersed feedback.

Learning is fundamental to adaptive behavior. In the typical learning task, each action is associated with only one outcome, which could be immediate or delayed. However, actions often have multiple consequences that unfold over time. Here, we used behavioral and eye-tracking experiments to study how people learn when their choices yield both immediate and delayed reward information. Importantly, the rewards themselves were all delivered at the end of the study so there was no reason to weight immediate and delayed reward information differently. Instead, we found that our subjects overweighte

MDD-thinker: A reasoning-enhanced large language model for diagnosis of major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of global disability and poses a substantial public health burden. However, current diagnostic approaches largely rely on subjective assessments and lack the ability to integrate heterogeneous clinical and sociodemographic information. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) offer new opportunities to support MDD diagnosis through reasoning over complex data, yet their clinical applicability is constrained by challenges related to interpretability, hallucinations, and reliance on synthetic data. METHODS: We propose MDD-Thi

Reinforcement learning for policymaking in epidemic control: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Managing an epidemic demands policies that respond at the pace of the outbreak. Conventional rule‑based interventions struggle to keep up, prompting interest in reinforcement learning (RL) for designing non‑pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). However, current evidence is fragmented across diverse models and reporting styles. OBJECTIVES: To systematically map how RL is applied for epidemic NPI design, describe modeling choices, algorithm architectures, evaluation practices, and identify trends and research gaps. METHODS: Peer-reviewed studies (2014-2025, English) that applied dee

Gene Regulatory Networks for Enhanced Vision-Based Robot Control: A Bio-Inspired Approach.

Vision-based robot control remains a significant challenge due to the sample inefficiency and prolonged training times associated with traditional deep reinforcement learning methods. We propose a novel approach inspired by biological gene regulation, leveraging Gene Regulatory Networks (GRNs) for efficient and robust robot control. In our approach, robot states are encoded as gene expression levels, and evolutionary optimization is used to learn GRN parameters that map raw visual inputs to motor commands. We evaluate this method on the KukaDiverseObjectEnv benchmark, where robots must grasp d

Bridging Control, Inference, Transport, and Thermodynamics: From Theory to Applications in Learning.

The last decade has seen the development of powerful methods for learning complex structure from high-dimensional data. These advances have brought to the foreground fundamental connections between subdisciplines of physics, applied mathematics, and machine learning. In this review, we bring together some of these ideas, often expressed in different languages, to highlight a conceptual thread that links five distinct fields: control theory, optimal transport, probabilistic inference, non-equilibrium thermodynamics, and machine learning. A common theme is the optimization of free-energy-like fu

Attention modulates value normalization in human reinforcement learning by shaping reward encoding.

Contextual valuation is a well-documented phenomenon in reinforcement learning, typically manifesting as range normalization in outcome representation. However, recent findings have revealed systematic deviations from this model, particularly when three options with equally spaced values are presented. In this study, we hypothesize that these distortions in outcome normalization arise from attentional processes. To test this, we conduct three experiments with 105 participants in total while simultaneously tracking their gaze position with eye-tracking. Furthermore, we systematically manipulate

Neural Reinforcement Learning Signals Predict Recovery From Impulse Control Disorder Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease are associated with a heavy burden on patients and caretakers. While recovery can occur, ICDs persist in many patients despite optimal management. The basis for this interindividual variability in recovery is unclear and poses a major challenge to personalized health care. METHODS: We adopted a computational psychiatry approach and leveraged the longitudinal, prospective Personalized Parkinson Project (136 people with Parkinson's disease, within 5 years of diagnosis) to combine dopaminergic learning theory-informed functional

FRLTC: A new topology control algorithm using federated reinforcement learning for software-defined wireless sensor network in IoT.

Topology is one of the most important factors influencing the performance of software-defined wireless sensor networks (SDWSN) in the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper presents a novel topology control algorithm using federated reinforcement learning, proposed for SDWSN in the IoT. Our approach represents the SDWSN as a federated learning system in which each sensor node runs a reinforcement learning model to change its communication range such that the node degree approaches the desired value. Another reinforcement learning model was applied to the SDN controller to assign the sensor node

Training an Unconstrained 6 DOF Biomimetic Robotic Eye With Deep Reinforcement Learning.

Understanding how the brain controls rapid eye movements, known as saccades, remains an open challenge. In this work, we develop a biologically plausible computational model of a biomimetic eye, with six degrees-of-freedom (DOFs), to explore the control signals that drive these rapid ocular movements, and further compare their movement characteristics with known human behaviour. We hypothesise that saccade generation is governed by optimising a total reward, penalising costs such as inaccuracy, duration, energy and tendon tension, and train a model-free deep reinforcement learning algorithm un

A fast risk assessment method for power balance under extreme weather conditions based on deep reinforcement learning with a coupled attention mechanism.

Even if persistent stagnant weather does not directly damage power grid equipment, it may lead to prolonged insufficient output of renewable energy sources and further trigger power balance risks. This paper proposes a rapid risk assessment framework that comprehensively incorporates meteorological sensitivity models, time-varying component failure probabilities, a Denoising Variational Autoencoder (DVAE) for generating coupled wind-photovoltaic-temperature scenarios, and a Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) model embedded with the feature token attention mechanism. The 72-hour assessmen

MsTargetPeaker: A Quality-Aware Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach for Peak Identification in Targeted Proteomics.

Targeted mass spectrometry enables precise peptide quantification by identifying high-quality chromatographic peaks for area integration. Automated peak identification remains challenging, particularly for low-abundance targets, because of interference and noise. Existing approaches typically rely on two supervised learning models, one for selecting peak regions and the other for performing downstream quality control in a separate postprocessing step. However, deferring quality assessment to a separate stage may limit the ability to refine peak boundaries in pursuit of improved quality, as the

Robust neural network controller for a lower limb exoskeleton with minimal sensor configuration: a deep reinforcement learning approach with policy distillation.

BACKGROUND: Lower limb rehabilitation exoskeletons (LLREs) are increasingly used in clinical settings to improve mobility in individuals with neuromuscular impairments. Most LLREs employ controllers focused on trajectory tracking, which lack adaptability to user-specific variations or voluntary effort. Autonomous LLREs enable hands-free gait but often require a multitude of sensors such as IMU, encoders, and foot force sensors to enable user intent prediction, gait phase detection, and dynamic balance. This often introduces substantial challenges related to cost, complexity, reliability, and s

Clinical risk-aware reinforcement learning for latency-constrained healthcare IoT scheduling.

The rapid growth of the Healthcare Internet of Things (HIoT) has enabled continuous, real-time patient monitoring through wearable and bedside devices. These systems generate time-sensitive physiological data that are essential for the early detection of critical conditions such as arrhythmias and hypoxia. However, conventional cloud-centric architectures introduce significant end-to-end latency, which can compromise timely clinical response in safety-critical scenarios. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) mitigates this limitation by bringing computation closer to data sources; yet, existing scheduli

Multi-Agent Learning for Precise and Collaborative Control of Anesthetics in TIVA.

Precise and collaborative control of multiple anesthetics in Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA) is essential for ensuring patient safety and maintaining the target depth of anesthesia (DoA). However, existing automated anesthesia control methods often fail to effectively capture the complex synergistic interactions between anesthetics and lack adaptability to patient-specific physiological variability, thereby limiting their clinical applicability. To address these issues, we propose AnesMADRL, a novel Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (MADRL)-based framework that leverages the Counterf
