Mobile phone-based remote patient monitoring system for management of hypertension in diabetic patients.

BACKGROUND: Rising concern over the poor level of blood-pressure (BP) control among hypertensive patients has prompted searches for novel ways of managing hypertension. The objectives of this study were to develop and pilot-test a home BP tele-management system that actively engages patients in the process of care. METHODS: Phase 1 involved a series of focus-group meetings with patients and primary care providers to guide the system's development. In Phase 2, 33 diabetic patients with uncontrolled ambulatory hypertension were enrolled in a 4-month pilot study, using a before-and-after design

Monitoring of sedation in mechanically ventilated patients using remote technology.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Two years of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic highlighted that excessive sedation in the ICU leading to coma and other adverse outcomes remains pervasive. There is a need to improve monitoring and management of sedation in mechanically ventilated patients. Remote technologies that are based on automated analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) could enhance standard care and alert clinicians real-time when severe EEG suppression or other abnormal brain states are detected. RECENT FINDINGS: High rates of drug-induced coma as well as delirium were found in several l

Remotely monitored telerehabilitation for cardiac patients: A review of the current situation.

Cardiac rehabilitation through center-based programs is an effective multicomponent intervention for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Despite the benefits it brings, patients' participation in rehabilitation programs remains low. In this work, the latest relevant literature regarding remotely monitored cardiac telerehabilitation (TR) was reviewed considering its efficiency and utilization. The main objective was to assess whether TR has the potential to be an appropriate alternative form of rehabilitation. A total of 105 publications on this topic were screened out of 747 f

An Intelligent Remote Monitoring System for Total Knee Arthroplasty Patients.

For the first six weeks following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), a patient will attend an outpatient clinic typically seen twice weekly. Here, an exercise regime is performed and improvement assessed using a hand held goniometer that measures the maximum angle of knee flexion, an important metric of progress. Additionally a series of daily exercises is performed at home, recorded in a diary. This protocol has problems. Patients must attend the hospital with assistance since they are not permitted to drive for six weeks following the procedure; appointments are sometimes missed; there are occas

Remote Monitoring Alert Burden: An Analysis of Transmission in >26,000 Patients.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine the remote monitoring (RM) alert burden in a multicenter cohort of patients with a cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED). BACKGROUND: RM of CIEDs allows timely recognition of patient and device events requiring intervention. Most RM involves burdensome manual workflow occurring exclusively on weekdays during office hours. Automated software may reduce such a burden, streamlining real-time alert responses. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 26,713 consecutive patients with a CIED undergoing managed RM utilizing PaceMate software between Nove

A remote monitor of bed patient cardiac vibration, respiration and movement.

We have developed a remote system for monitoring heart rate, respiration rate and movement behavior of at-home elderly people who are living alone. The system consists of a 40 kHz ultrasonic transmitter and receiver, linear integrated circuits, a low-power 8-bit single chip microcomputer and an Internet server computer. The 40 kHz ultrasonic transmitter and receiver are installed into a bed mattress. The transmitted signal diffuses into the bed mattress, and the amplitude of the received ultrasonic wave is modulated by the shape of the mattress and parameters such as respiration, cardiac vibra

Remote Patient Monitoring Across European Health Systems: Policy Insights from a Cross-Country Stakeholder Study.

Background/Objectives: Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is recognized as a key component of health system transformation in Europe, in the context of vulnerable populations. However, its large-scale adoption remains uneven across countries. The research explored how technical infrastructure, governance and regulation, interoperability, and ecosystem readiness influence RPM adoption and scale-up in seven European country contexts. Methods: An exploratory qualitative cross-country study combined targeted desk research with semi-structured interviews conducted between February and March 2025. The

Remote Patient Monitoring in Home Dialysis Patients: Enhancing Care for Home Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients on hemodialysis need continuous care, which has a minimal effect on their quality of life (QoL), as they have enormous symptomatic burdens, such as deprivation of sleep and anxiety, in addition to other consequences affecting their QoL. Moreover, managing dialysis patients is burdensome and costly. Telemedicine has recently gained popularity for electronically transferring data between patients and clinics. This has enabled remote monitoring of patients and timely intervention. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is a noninvasive healthcare service

Cost-Effectiveness of Day Surgery With Remote Patient Monitoring for Acute Cholecystitis: Economic Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Reducing the time to surgery for patients requiring cholecystectomy may lessen the risk of adverse outcomes. Dedicated day-surgery lists supported by out-of-hospital remote monitoring have been explored as a potential solution; however, the cost-effectiveness of such innovative care models remains largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study presents a cost-effectiveness analysis comparing an acute day-surgery care model with remote patient monitoring to a conventional inpatient-centric care model for high-acuity cases of cholecystitis. METHODS: Post-surgical complications, effectiv

Remote vision-based digital patient monitoring of pulse and respiratory rates in acute medical wards.

Remote Vision-Based digital Patient Monitoring (VBPM) of pulse (PR) and respiratory rate (RR) was set up in six single rooms in an acute medical and an orthopaedic ward. We compared 102 PR and 154 RR VBPM measurements (from 27 patients) with paired routine nurse measurements. VBPM measurements of RR were validated by reviewing video footage. Nurse measurements of RR were often 16-18 breaths/minute, and did not match VBPM RR (overestimating at low RR and underestimating at high RR). Nurse measurements of pulse were on average 3.9 beats per minute greater than matched VBPM measurements. VBPM was

Protocol for Evaluating Remote Patient Blood Pressure Monitoring Adapted to Black Women and Birthing Persons.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of maternal death among Black women in the United States. A large, urban hospital adopted remote patient blood pressure monitoring (RBPM) to increase blood pressure monitoring and improve the management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) by reducing the time to diagnosis of HDP. The digital platform integrates with the electronic health record (EHR), automatically inputting RBPM readings to the patients' chart; communicating elevated blood pressure values to the healthcare team; and offers a partial offset of the cost through insurance plan

Remote patient monitoring to facilitate same-day discharge after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy: a pilot evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Limited hospital inpatient capacity, exacerbated by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) and associated staffing shortages, has driven interest in converting surgeries historically done as inpatient procedures to same-day surgeries (SDS). Remote patient monitoring (RPM) has the potential to increase safety and confidence in SDS but has had mixed success in a bariatric population. OBJECTIVES: Assess the feasibility of and adherence to a protocol offering patients same-day laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) supported by RPM with an updated wearable device. Secondary outcomes were readmissions, c

Remote monitoring of a high-risk patient with Brugada syndrome: association of different arrhythmic manifestations.

We report on the remote arrhythmia monitoring of a 34-year-old man with highly symptomatic Brugada syndrome, who initially presented with syncope, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, and spontaneous coved-type electrocardiogram. The patient received a dual-chamber implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) with Home Monitoring™ facilities and experienced recurrent ICD shocks for spontaneous ventricular fibrillation (VF) episodes during the first year after ICD implantation. Remote monitoring revealed an increased burden of premature ventricular complexes and atrial arrhythmias each time VF spont

Population Health Approach to Blood Pressure Control Using Advanced Practice Provider-Managed Remote Patient Monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines suggest that home blood pressure (BP) readings are more reliable than in-clinic measurements; however, quality metrics for patients with hypertension (HTN) primarily rely on in-clinic readings. To improve BP documentation and management, we implemented an advanced practice provider (APP)-managed remote patient monitoring (RPM) program. METHODS: The electronic health records (EHR) of internal medicine patients with HTN and uncontrolled BP (≥140/90 mm Hg, per our institution's quality metric) were reviewed for more recent controlled (<140/90 mm Hg) home readings. Assessment of clinical pharmacist outreach and medication titration in remote patient monitoring program for hypertension.

In this implementation science study evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of a remote patient monitoring program for hypertension, we found that most, but not all of patients received the intended program components of clinical pharmacist outreach and medication titration. Despite feasibility challenges, remote-patient monitoring for hypertension was effective at reducing systolic blood pressure by ≥ 5 mmHg in (64%) and 346 (71%) patients by 3 and 6 months of enrollment respectively. Unexpectedly, chi-square and multivariate logistic regressions analysis showed that the clinical pharma
