Reproductive and contraceptive knowledge, contraceptive self-efficacy, and contraceptive behavior among teenage women.

This research utilizes a social learning theory perspective to investigate the relationships among teenage women's Contraceptive Self-Efficacy (CSE), reproductive and contraceptive knowledge (RCK), and contraceptive behavior. It was posited that CSE might influence the way knowledge translates into behavior because individuals who feel they can and should use contraceptives may be more receptive to information. A secondary line of analysis examined the individual responses on the RCK to ascertain common knowledge and myths. The 521 respondents were from two diverse samples of teenage women att

The pheromone affects reproductive physiology and behavior by regulating hormone in juvenile mice.

Pheromones could promote hormone secretions and regulate sexual behavior. It was unclear whether multiparous pheromone could induce variations in puberty. The aim was to ascertain whether pheromone in urine of multiparous females induced central precocious puberty (CPP) in juvenile C57BL/6J females. The precocious puberty was examined by vaginal smear, lordosis reaction, HE stain, and ELISA analysis. Results suggested that the first vaginal opening and the first estrus were significantly earlier. The time interval of the first vaginal opening and estrus was significantly shortened. It was inte

Long term monitoring of the reproductive behavior of wild Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla).

Observations of Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) in the wild are extremely rare and challenging because of their nocturnal and cryptic activity patterns and low population density. The present article reported the first field observation in eastern Taiwan, from October 4, 2012 to June 16, 2016, on the reproductive behavior of the Chinese pangolin based on the monitoring of a female (LF28) using radiotelemetry and camera traps. During this period, LF28 aged from 1-4.5 years old and gave two single-births, both took place in early December, at 3 and 4 years old, respectively. We recorded th

RFamide-related Peptide-3 and the Trade-off between Reproductive and Ingestive Behavior.

Ingestive and sex behaviors are important for individual survival and reproductive success, but when environmental energy availability is limited, individuals of many different species make a trade-off, forfeiting sex for ingestive behavior. For example, food-deprived female Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) forego vaginal scent marking and lordosis (sex behaviors) in favor of foraging, hoarding, and eating food (ingestive behavior). Reproductive processes tend to be energetically costly, and individual survival requires homeostasis in metabolic energy. Thus, during energetic challenges,

A Neural Basis for Control of Cichlid Female Reproductive Behavior by Prostaglandin F2α.

In most species, females time reproduction to coincide with fertility. Thus, identifying factors that signal fertility to the brain can provide access to neural circuits that control sexual behaviors. In vertebrates, levels of key signaling molecules rise at the time of fertility to prime the brain for reproductive behavior [1-11], but how and where they regulate neural circuits is not known [12, 13]. Specifically, 17α,20β-dihydroxyprogesterone (DHP) and prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) levels rise in teleost fish around the time of ovulation [10, 14, 15]. In an African cichlid fish, Astatotilapia bu

Maternal influences on the sexual behavior and reproductive success of the female rat.

In many species, including humans, there is evidence for parental effects on within-sex variations in reproductive behavior. In the present studies we found that variations in postnatal maternal care were associated with individual differences in female sexual behavior in the rat. Females born to and reared by dams that showed enhanced pup licking/grooming (i.e., High LG mothers) over the first week postpartum showed significantly reduced sexual receptivity and alterations in the pacing of male mounting (i.e., longer inter-intromission intervals) observed in a paced mating test. There were min

A rapid neuromodulatory role for steroid hormones in the control of reproductive behavior.

The long-term transcriptional actions of steroids that shape neuronal morphology and the probability of behavioral expression are well established. More recently, attention has been focused on the role of rapid (minute-by-minute) steroid actions on neuronal mechanisms of reproductive behavior. In this review, we first consider the rapid actions of steroids on mating and copulatory behaviors in tetrapod vertebrates. Evidence for rapid effects of steroids is presented for chemoinvestigatory behavior (genital sniffing of females by male mice), lordosis (arched-back mating posture in female rats),

The Nhlh2 transcription factor is required for female sexual behavior and reproductive longevity.

Nhlh2 is a member of the basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor family and is expressed in developing and adult neuroendocrine tissues such as the pituitary and hypothalamus. Targeted deletion of Nhlh2 (N2KO) in mice results in hypogonadism and obesity. While gonadally intact male N2KO mice are infertile and lack male sexual behavior, female N2KO mice can become pregnant and carry litters to full term. Unlike normal females in which fertility averages 8-12 months with approximately one pregnancy per month, N2KO females have a shorter reproductive span with most females supporting o

Narratives and behavioral perspectives: the overlooked role of infertility in reproductive health.

Billions of dollars are spent on family planning in low- and middle-income countries each year. Despite this investment, about half of all pregnancies are still unintended. In recent years, there have been indications of progress against closing this gap, including meaningful commitments from country governments, increased investment in reproductive health supplies, and the development of new contraceptive technologies. There is, however, one issue that emerges in almost all research focused on women's needs and preferences related to reproductive health but has been woefully absent from the g

[Adaptations in reproduction and behavior of captive chimpanzees-- zoobiological and veterinary managements].

Monitoring of renal LH-excretion, changes in genital tumescence and menses assesses reproductive status in zookept female chimpanzees. Temporary detumescence of female sex skin in estrus is a reliable indicator for stress. Assessment of female chimpanzee reproductive status relates to local and individual variation of cycle length and temporal correlation of investigated parameters. Monitoring of neonate chimpanzee behavioural ontogeny is an essential tool of evaluating applied rearing methods since individuals were to be integrated into the adult group during adolescence. Slow and continuous

Implications of hormonal influences on sexual behavior for demographic models of reproduction.

In exploring the implications of hormonal influences on sexual behavior for reproduction, we have focused on androgens because of the convincing evidence for androgenic effects on female sexual motivation. We have been guided by the simple idea, based on clinical findings among hyperandrogenic women, that higher testosterone levels will increase female sexual motivation which in turn will result in increased coital frequency. However, careful consideration of the evidence fails to confirm such a role for testosterone in sexual behavior among normal women at any point in the reproductive span.

The Apgar Score in Foals: Association with Clinical, Behavioral and Reproductive Parameters.

The Apgar score is commonly used to assess neonatal vitality in foals, although its clinical relevance remains unclear. This retrospective study evaluated 144 foals investigating associations between a four-parameter Apgar score assessed within 5 min of birth as well as selected neonatal and maternal variables. Inclusion criteria required availability of Apgar scores and body temperature measurements. Maternal, reproductive, and peripartum determinants were evaluated using ordinal logistic regression. Spearman's rank correlation, Kruskal-Wallis analysis, and Fisher's exact test were applied as

Teen Girls' Reproductive Attitudes and the Timing and Sequencing of Sexual Behaviors.

PURPOSE: Teen girls consider not only health outcomes, such as pregnancy or contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but also social outcomes, such as guilt or embarrassment, when making decisions about sexual behaviors. METHODS: Following a sample of female virgins aged 15-18 years from wave I through wave IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (N = 2,376), we tested whether adolescent girls' attitudes toward sex, contraception, pregnancy, and STIs influence the timing of coital debut, using discrete time event history logistic regression, and whether

Modes of estrus induction as a factor in studies of the reproductive behavior of rodents.

The choice of a mode of estrus for use in studies related to reproductive processes often is made arbitrarily. Females may be in hormone-induced estrus (HIE), cycling estrus (CE), male-induced estrus (MIE), or postpartum estrus (PPE). Although mode of estrus affects various aspects of copulatory behavior in different species in different ways, males mating with PPE females generally require more intromissions to reach ejaculation than with females in HIE or CE; males mating with females in CE generally attain more ejaculations than with PPE females. The duration of receptivity generally is sho

Female and male moths display different reproductive behavior when facing new versus previous mates.

Multiple mating allows females to obtain material (more sperm and nutrient) and/or genetic benefits. The genetic benefit models require sperm from different males to fertilize eggs competitively or the offspring be fathered by multiple males. To maximize genetic benefits from multiple mating, females have evolved strategies to prefer novel versus previous mates in their subsequent matings. However, the reproductive behavior during mate encounter, mate choice and egg laying in relation to discrimination and preference between sexes has been largely neglected. In the present study, we used novel

Taenia crassiceps infection disrupts estrous cycle and reproductive behavior in BALB/c female mice.

Previously, it has been shown that parasitic infections are able to alter the normal mammal physiology, at several extents. Thus, we investigated the effects on estrous cycle and sexual behavior induced by intraperitoneal infection with Taenia crassiceps in female host mice. Along the weeks of infection, parasites were collected from the peritoneal cavity of female mice, showing the maximum parasite load at 16 weeks. No parasites were found outside peritoneal cavity. Vaginal estrous cycle was monitored daily for 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks of infection, and results compared against age-matched femal

Cancer screening, reproductive history, socioeconomic status, and anticipated cancer-related behavior among Hmong adults.

In the United States, breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer screening rates are low or non-existent in the Hmong population compared to non-Hispanic Whites. No Hmong adults report ever participating in prostate (male only) and colorectal cancer screening. US-born Hmong women, those living in the US 20 years, and those 39 years old are more likely to be screened for breast and cervical cancer than other women. The Hmong, in general, are a young population (median age = 34 years) with low socioeconomic status. As a function of these characteristics, 52% of Hmong women reported having

Neonatal behavior and infant cognitive development in rhesus macaques produced by assisted reproductive technologies.

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) used in fertility clinics include in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), followed by embryo transfer into the biological or a surrogate mother. Over 1,000,000 liveborn offspring--an estimated 1 in 150 United States newborns--have been produced worldwide by ART since 1978. IVF appears to produce healthy children in singleton pregnancies, though concerns remain regarding preterm deliveries, multiple pregnancies, as well as the longer-term consequences of all ART procedures. Clinical studies remain difficult to interpret

Participation of growth factor signal transduction pathways in estradiol facilitation of female reproductive behavior.

Estradiol (E(2)) regulates female reproductive behavior (lordosis) by acting on estrogen-sensitive neurons. We recently showed that E(2) facilitation of lordosis behavior requires concurrent activation of brain IGF-I receptors. The present study confirmed this finding and sought to identify the downstream signaling pathways involved in estrogen/IGF-I priming of lordosis. Intracerebroventricular infusions of a selective IGF-I receptor antagonist were administered to ovariectomized rats every 12 h beginning 1 h before the first of two daily E(2) injections. IGF-I receptor blockade partially inhi
