Saussurea pulchella (Asteraceae) is widely distributed in Korea and has been used in Korean folk medicine for the treatment of inflammation, hypertension, hepatitis, and arthritis. Pulchellamin G is an amino acid-sesquiterpene lactone conjugate isolated from S. pulchella. In the present study, we focused on the anti-inflammatory effect of pulchellamin G, which acts by inducing the expression of heme oxygenase (HO)-1. HO-1 plays important roles in cytoprotection since it has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and antiapoptotic properties. Pulchellamin G inhibited the mRNA and pr

Carbapenem resistant Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as one of the most difficult to treat nosocomial bacterial infections in recent years. It was one of the major causes of secondary infections in Covid-19 patients in developing countries. The polycationic polypeptide antibiotic colistin is used as a last resort drug to treat carbapenem resistant A. baumannii infections. Therefore, resistance to colistin is considered as a serious medical threat. The purpose of this study was to assess the current status of colistin resistance in Pakistan, a country where carbapenem resistant A. bumannii

OBJECTIVES: Saussurea costus (Falc.) Lipschitz is traditionally used to manage thyroid disorders; however, the components responsible for its effects on propylthiouracil (PTU)-induced hypothyroidism and their mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of S. costus on PTU-induced hypothyroid rats using serum metabolomics, network pharmacology, and in vivo testing.
METHODS: Hypothyroidism was induced in rats by oral PTU administration. The metabolites absorbed from S. costus were characterized using UPLC-MS/MS and then analysed through network pharmacology to construct a com

Saussurea costus is a plant traditionally used for the treatment of several ailments. Our study accomplished the UPLC/T-TOF-MS/MS analysis of a methanol extract of Saussurea costus roots (MESC), in addition to lipoidal matter determination and assessment of its in vivo hepatoprotective activity. In this study, we were able to identify the major metabolites in MESC rather than the previously known isolated compounds, improving our knowledge of its chemical constituents. The flavones apigenin, acacetin, baicalein, luteolin, and diosmetin, and the flavonol aglycones quercetin, kaempferol, isorham

Saussurea costus (Falc.) Lipsch., an endangered Indo-Himalayan medicinal plant, is highly valued for its roots enriched with polyphenols and sesquiterpenes of therapeutic relevance. In this study, ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) was evaluated as a sustainable and efficient alternative to conventional techniques for recovering bioactive metabolites from S. costus roots. Process optimization was carried out using response surface methodology (Box-Behnken design) with aqueous ethanol (50:50, v/v) as the extraction medium. The cavitation-driven process significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved recove

Costus oil, an iol isolated from a Composite, Saussurea lappa C., used in perfumery, is responsible of numerous cases of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). The haptens incriminated are sesquiterpene lactones, costunolide and dehydrocostuslactone. These lactones can be removed from the oil by using a polymer, aminoethyl-polystyrene, to which they become bound: the passing solution is lactone-free. A group of guinea-pigs could be successfully sensitized (Freund Complete Adjuvant Test) to costus essential oil, while another group, injected in the same way with polymer-treated essential oil (i.e.

The effects of boiled water extracts of clonorchicidal raw drugs screened by the EPG counts in vivo on the structure of Clonorchis sinensis were investigated. The extracts of Cassia obutusifolia and Dictamnus dasycarpus did not seem to induce the morphological changes of the worms, and in those of Machilus thunbergii and Prunús mume, widening of bladder to lower level of seminal receptacle was visible without any other changes. Those of Inula helenium and Saussurea lappa, however, disclosed regressive and progressive changes as degeneration, atrophy, necrosis, dilatation, etc. of viscera of th

Nowadays, the world is challenged with highly contagious diseases, one of their preliminary virulence mechanisms is the suppression of innate immunity. Therefore, promoting natural immunity is a good precautionary strategy. we investigated and compared the effects of several natural herbal extracts -Moringa oleifera, Ziziphus spina christi, and Saussurea costus, and chitosan nanoparticles (CS NPs)- as well as conjugated extracts with CS NPs on the immunological parameters of dexamethasone immunosuppressed (IS) male rats. The plant extracts were assessed for total flavonoids, phenolics, and ant

Kangen-karyu (KGK) is a herbal formula created under the theory of traditional Chinese herbal medicine to invigorate the blood and dispel blood stasis. It contains 6 herbs: peony root, cnidium rhizome, safflower, cyperus rhizome, saussurea root (JP XIV), and Salvia miltiorrhiza root. The present study has been conducted to evaluate the in vivo anti-thrombotic activity of KGK using normal mice. Three consecutive days of oral administration of KGK to mice significantly extended tail-bleeding time and suppressed ex vivo platelet aggregation, while it did not extend the prothrombin time of plasma.
