Scleromyxedema (SM) is a sclerotic variant of lichen or papular mucinosis in which lichenoid papules and scleroderma-like features are both present. It is a rare deposition disorder characterized by generalized papular and sclerodermoid eruptions, mucin deposition, increased fibroblast proliferation, fibrosis, and monoclonal gammopathy (also known as paraproteinemia) mainly of the immunoglobulin G-lambda type in the absence of thyroid disease. It usually affects middle-aged adults and shows no gender or racial predilection. In addition to the skin findings and paraproteinemia, patients with SM

The treatment of scleromyxedema has been largely ineffective. We report improvement of scleromyxedema with myopathy after treatment with isotretinoin, 40 mg twice a day. We review other therapeutic modalities used for this disorder and discuss properties of isotretinoin that may have contributed to the favorable response.

BACKGROUND: Cutis laxa-like features were observed in a subset of patients with scleromyxedema. Given this observation, clinical and histopathologic features of scleromyxedema were reviewed in correlation with elastic tissue staining.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical records and histopathologic features from patients with scleromyxedema seen at our institution from 1992 through 2013. We also evaluated available skin biopsies with an elastin stain and assessed whether dermal elastin fibers were diminished in density or were fragmented (or both).
RESULTS: Nineteen patients with sc

Myxomas are rare cutaneous tumors that have been associated with a variety of other abnormalities including atrial myxomas, endocrine abnormalities, and bone malformations. We describe a 38-year-old white man with multiple periorbital myxomas in whom myalgias, fatigue, and more diffuse cutaneous involvement developed. These findings were consistent with scleromyxedema. He also had an associated left subclavian deep venous thrombosis. The patient responded well to therapy with cyclophosphamide.

A case of papular mucinosis (scleromyxoedema of Arndt-Gottron) in a 64-year-old man is reported. Although a cutaneous mucinosis, the disease is characterized by a number of systemic disorders which determine the course and prognosis of the disease. A survey of 57 reported cases reveals that, in addition to the obligatory paraproteinaemia, neurological (24% of cases), cardiovascular (10%) and myopathic (9%) symptoms are in the foreground. Systemic lymphoplasmo-reticular involvement occurred in 14%. These findings emphasize the need for interdisciplinary cooperation in the diagnosis and for long

Scleromyxedema is an infiltrative skin disease produced by hyaluronic acid deposition in the dermis. A benign monoclonal gammopathy is usually present. We report 2 patients with scleromyxedema and systemic illnesses. Both patients had muscle weakness, dysphagia, and weight loss in addition to the skin changes. One also had sclerodactyly, telangiectasias, and Raynaud's phenomenon. Scleromyxedema with systemic involvement may mimic rheumatic diseases.

Scleromyxedema is a rare and frequently disabling disease characterized by generalized waxy papules, skin induration, and cardinal histological features of dermal fibroblastic proliferation, thickened collagen, and mucin deposition. A monoclonal gammopathy is almost always present with rare progression to multiple myeloma. We describe the case of a 54-year-old man who presented with a rash in the setting of a new medication and histological features suggesting a granulomatous drug reaction. Despite discontinuation of the medication, the rash persisted and a second biopsy confirmed an interstit

Scleromyxedema (SM) was previously known to be associated with monoclonal gammopathy. The association of SM and its counterpart lichen myxedematosus (LM) with chronic hepatitis has rarely been reported. We retrospectively reviewed medical records and histopathological reports of consecutive patients who presented at our department with the diagnosis of SM or LM from January 2001 to September 2017. The patients' demographic details, cutaneous presentation, associated underlying diseases and hepatitic profile were studied and compared with previous published cases. In all, 28 patients were enrol

Scleromyxedema is a rare disease of unknown etiology primarily affecting the skin, characterized by generalized papular eruption, dermal fibroblast proliferation with mucin deposition, and a monoclonal gammopathy. Neurological impairment is a rare but sometimes fatal complication of scleromyxedema that should be rapidly identified to prevent significant morbidity and mortality. A 63-year-old Caucasian man had a 2-year history of scleromyxedema, and was under immunosuppressive treatment with ciclosporine and methotrexate. The patient came to our attention because of sudden neurological dysfunct

Scleromyxedema is a generalized, papular, and sclerodermoid form of lichen myxedematosus associated with monoclonal gammopathy and systemic changes. Despite anecdotal reports of success with various agents, no satisfactory treatments are currently available. We report 3 adult patients with recalcitrant scleromyxedema associated with paraproteinemia who were treated with thalidomide. All 3 patients had marked improvement of the skin lesions and joint mobility after the first 2 months of therapy, with further amelioration after 4 months, and reduction in paraprotein levels.

Scleromyxedema is a rare systemic disorder characterized by cutaneous sclerosis and papulosis, accompanied by deposition of mucin in the skin and other organs. We describe a case of scleromyxedema in a 62-year-old man. The cutaneous symptoms of the disorder were preceded by episodes of acute central nervous system dysfunction that included mental confusion, hemiparesis, tremor, and migraine. As the cutaneous symptoms progressed, the patient experienced persistent confusion and difficulty concentrating. Therapy with melphalan and plasmapheresis led to complete resolution of the cutaneous sympto

Scleromyxedema is a rare fibromucinous connective tissue that can be associated with systemic changes, such as myopathy, neurologic defects, esophageal dysmotility, paraproteinemia, and restrictive lung disease. We describe a fatal case of scleromyxedema in which neurologic, cardiac, gastrointestinal, and muscle changes were present. At autopsy, mucin was found in the papillary dermis of skin and in coronary and pulmonary vessels, but was absent from the brain, kidneys, heart, gastrointestinal tract, esophagus, liver, thyroid, lymph nodes, bone marrow, and pancreas. Because the pathogenesis of

Scleromyxedema is a rare disorder where patients may develop systemic manifestations such as monoclonal gammopathy, inflammatory polyarthritis, and esophageal and neurological dysfunction. Histologically, there may be atypical variants of scleromyxedema showing features resembling interstitial granuloma annulare. We report an unusual case of scleromyxedema with interstitial granulomatous pattern and highlight potential diagnostic pitfalls when encountered with such a variant.

Scleromyxedema is regarded as a rare cutaneous mucinosis from a group of lichen myxedematosus characterized by diffuse mucin deposition, sclerosis, and lichenoid eruptions in the absence of thyroid disease. The paper discusses the pathogenesis of the disease and histological changes in tissues. It underlines the need for using histochemical tests to identify acidic and neutral glycosaminoglycans and gives a differential diagnosis of this disease.

Scleromyxedema is part of a group of cutaneous mucinoses, characterized by a generalized papular eruption, dermal mucin deposition, and an increase in dermal collagen. This condition can be localized as discrete papular lichen myxedematous skin or as a systemic condition usually associated with paraproteinaemia. To date, there is no unifying treatment and is limited by rarity, small number of case reports, and the lack of randomized controlled trials. We describe the case of a 56-year-old gentleman with features of scleromyxedema who had cutaneous and cardiac involvement, and significant media

Scleromyxedema--the generalized form of lichen myxedematosus, a primary mucinosis--is a rare disease in human patients. It is characterized by dermal mucin deposits, increased numbers of fibroblasts, and variable fibrosis in the absence of thyroid disease. It is accompanied in 80% of cases by a monoclonal gammopathy. To date, scleromyxedema with systemic involvement has not been documented in domestic animals. This is the first report of a scleromyxedema-like syndrome in a cat, which had a substantial deposition of mucin in the dermis of the head and paws with a mild gammaglobulinemia of 2.25

BACKGROUND: Scleromyxedema is an unusual skin disease characterized by mucinous infiltration of the skin. There is no satisfactory treatment for this disorder.
CASE REPORT: We report 2 cases of scleromyxedema, both associated with an IgG-lambda paraprotein. Treatment with thalidomide was started and great improvement of the lesion was noted as shown by a quality of life questionnaire similar to those used in rheumatoid arthritis. TNF-alpha value was elevated in both cases during this treatment.
DISCUSSION: We hypothesize that the efficiency of thalidomide could be mediated by its costimulato
