The Brain in (Willed) Action: A Meta-Analytical Comparison of Imaging Studies on Motor Intentionality and Sense of Agency.

Voluntary actions can be fractionated in different phenomena: from the emergence of intentions and the ensuing motor plans and actions, to the anticipation and monitoring of their outcomes, to the appreciation of their congruency with intentions and to the eventual emergence of a sense of agency. It follows that motor intention and the sense of agency should occur at different stages in the normal generation of willed actions. Both these processes have been associated with a fronto-parietal motor network, but no study has investigated to what extent the two experiences can be dissociated for t

Did you hear your action? An ecological approach to the senses of ownership and agency.

The Sense of Ownership (SoO) and the Sense of Agency (SoA) are two key components of bodily self-consciousness. In this experiment, we investigated how they are affected by variations in the ecological validity of the moving Rubber Hand Illusion (mRHI) paradigm, which typically include three movement conditions: active congruent, passive congruent, and active incongruent. These conditions were either in a session in which no auditory feedback associated with finger-tapping was eliminated, or in a session in which such a feedback occurred. Since the presence of the auditory feedback more closel

Mobile App-Based Tracking of Daily Explicit and Implicit Sense of Agency Among Adults Living in Japan: Longitudinal Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Sense of agency (SoA) is the subjective experience of controlling one's actions and their effects in the world. SoA is important for behavioral change and goal achievement, and its measurement via digital devices has gained attention in health promotion and therapeutic interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study describes longitudinal changes and individual variations in general explicit sense of agency (GenExp-SoA) and local implicit sense of agency (LocalImp-SoA), measured in daily life using a mobile app, and examines their associations with demographic and personality traits. METHOD

I Hear My Voice; Therefore I Spoke: The Sense of Agency Over Speech Is Enhanced by Hearing One's Own Voice.

The subjective experience of causing an action is known as the sense of agency. Dysfunctional sense of agency over speech has been suggested as a cause of auditory hallucinations. However, agency over speech has not been extensively characterized in previous empirical studies. Here, we manipulated self-voice identity, an indicator of self, embedded in the acoustic quality of voice and examined implicit and explicit measures of the sense of agency. Experiment 1 (N = 29 adults) demonstrated more compression of a perceived interval between action and outcome when participants heard their undistor

Investigating the role of sensorimotor versus contextual cues in the sense of joint agency: a human-human and human-robot study.

Sense of Joint Agency (SoJA), is the feeling of control experienced by humans for their own, as well as their partner's actions, when acting in joint action with others. SoJA is ubiquitous in human-human interaction. Therefore, it is both interesting as well as relevant to understand the factors that affect the formation of SoJA both in human-human and in human-robot interaction. On the one hand, previous work suggests that sensorimotor cues may be the main determinant of "lower-level" implicit SoJA in human-human joint action. On the other hand, recent work shows that contextual factors, such

High-frequency neurostimulation of the right inferior parietal cortex alters the sense of agency: Results from tACS/tRNS and rTMS-EEG studies.

BACKGROUND: Sense of agency (SoA) is the subjective experience of causing and controlling one's actions. Recent studies have linked SoA to gamma-band oscillations in the right inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and suggest that it can be modulated through external interventions using neurostimulation techniques. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to provide evidence for a causal role of the right IPL in SoA using multiple noninvasive brain stimulation methods (NIBS), electroencephalography (EEG), and a feedback manipulation task. METHODS: In two experiments, we investigated the effect of gamma band (60

Distorted time window for sensorimotor integration and preserved time window for sense of agency in patients with post-stroke limb apraxia.

Limb apraxia is a cognitive-motor disorder typically resulting from left hemisphere stroke, characterized by an inability to perform skilled limb movements despite intact motor and sensory functions. Previous studies suggest that individuals with apraxia exhibit deficits in sensorimotor integration, particularly in detecting temporal discrepancies between movement and sensory feedback. However, whether these deficits affect explicit sense of agency (SoA) remains unclear. This study investigated the time window for sensorimotor integration and explicit SoA in post-stroke patients with and witho

An investigation of the experience of control through the sense of agency in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a review and meta-analysis.

The construct of sense of agency (SoA) has proven useful for understanding mechanisms underlying obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) phenomenology, especially in explaining the apparent dissociation in OCD between actual and perceived control over one's actions. Paradoxically, people with OCD appear to experience both diminished SoA (feeling unable to control their actions) and inflated SoA (having "magical" control over events). The present review investigated the extent to which the SoA is distorted in OCD, in terms of both implicit (ie, inferred from correlates and outcomes of voluntary act

Experiences of taking neuroleptic medication and impacts on symptoms, sense of self and agency: a systematic review and thematic synthesis of qualitative data.

PURPOSE: Neuroleptic (antipsychotic) drugs reduce psychotic symptoms, but how they achieve these effects and how the drugs' effects are experienced by people who take them are less well understood. The present study describes a synthesis of qualitative data about mental and behavioural alterations associated with taking neuroleptics and how these interact with symptoms of psychosis and people's sense of self and agency. METHODS: Nine databases were searched to identify qualitative literature concerning experiences of taking neuroleptic medication. A thematic synthesis was conducted. RESULTS:

Case series of patients with early psychosis presenting hypoperfusion in angular gyrus and self-disturbance: Implication for the sense of agency and schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Self-disturbance has been considered as a core symptomatology of schizophrenia and its emergence from the prodromal phase makes it a crucial target for early detection and intervention in schizophrenia. Currently, the clinical assessment of self-disturbance relies on the self-report of patients, and clinicians have no diagnostic tools in clinical practice. Identifying the neural substrate of self-disturbance would be of great clinical value by shedding light on the core dimension of schizophrenia. CASE PRESENTATION: We first introduce an adolescent patient who initially presented

Quantifying the Sense Agency: A Forced Choice Paradigm for Assessing Intentional Binding During Upper Limb Movements.

The sense of agency is the perceptual experience of authoring our volitional actions. It is a valuable framework for assessing perceptions of control and the quality of interaction for users operating assistive devices. Intentional binding (IB) is a quantitative measure of the sense of agency where individuals perceive temporal compression between a volitional action and its sensory outcome. IB has been investigated during simple button press actions, but little work extends findings to gross whole-limb movements that are more relevant to assistive or rehabilitative robotics. This study develo

Boosting the hypnotic experience. Inhibition of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex alters hypnotizability and sense of agency. A randomized, double-blind and sham-controlled tDCS study.

Hypnotizability refers to the individual responsiveness to hypnosis, and literature shows that the greater the hypnotizability, the more effective the hypnotic suggestions. So far, few studies attempted to enhance hypnotizability, and only two adopted brain stimulation with magnetic pulses. In the present study, we aimed to boost hypnotizability through transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). To this aim, bilateral tDCS was applied over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) with the target electrode providing negative current (cathodal stimulation) over the left hemisphere. Twenty

Reconciling Reduced the Sense of Ownership and Agency Toward a Virtual Keypad With Enhanced Haptic Experience Using Visually Adjusted Self-Haptics for Key-Input Interaction.

Self-Haptics is a tactile feedback technique where users utilize their own body to generate tactile sensations. This method allows the body to act purely as a prop, making it useful for virtual objects and user interfaces not directly related to the body. However, any method for maintaining the sense of ownership (SoO) and agency (SoA) of the user's body and interaction targets that aligns with the perceptual interaction by visual cues has not been established. To address this, we present the concept of "(Not My) Self-Haptics," which aims to resolve these inconsistencies, leveraging vision's d

Sense of personal agency towards mitigating the threat of antibiotic resistance: a focus group study with parents of children under 5 years old, conducted mid-pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Most antibiotic prescribing occurs in primary care, largely in children under 5 years old, and often inappropriately. This study investigated knowledge, attitudes and behaviours (KABs) towards common childhood infections, antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), among parents of children under 5 years old. The concept of individual sacrifice (forgoing antibiotics-a selective pressure for AMR) to mitigate future societal risk of AMR and how the COVID-19 pandemic shaped views were explored. METHODS: This qualitative study included three, one-hour, virtual focus groups with

A psychometric approach to the relationship between hand-foot preference and auditory hallucinations in the general population: atypical cerebral lateralization may cause an abnormal sense of agency.

The present study examined the relationship between the atypical cerebral lateralization pattern represented in hand and foot preferences and schizotypal personality traits, especially proneness to auditory hallucinations as related to a sense of agency. A sense of agency, measured with questionnaires in the present study, is the sense that "I am the one who causes the actions." Although atypical lateralization and an abnormal sense of agency may be related to schizophrenia or schizotypal personality, the connection between them has remained unclear. The present study used cluster analysis to

Japan's efforts to promote global health using satellite remote sensing data from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency for prediction of infectious diseases and air quality.

In this paper we review the status of new applications research of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) for global health promotion using information derived from Earth observation data by satellites in cooperation with inter-disciplinary collaborators. Current research effort at JAXA to promote global public health is focused primarily on the use of remote sensing to address two themes: (i) prediction models for malaria and cholera in Kenya, Africa; and (ii) air quality assessment of small, particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3). When do we take the institutional stance?

While role-based representations likely play some role in social cognition, we are skeptical that this amounts to a distinctive "stance." We encourage the authors to make more specific predictions about when we rely more upon institutional reasoning rather than mentalizing. We suggest that this might depend on the amount of perceived individual agency afforded to occupants of different social roles.

In and out of control: brain mechanisms linking fluency of action selection to self-agency in patients with schizophrenia.

Sense of agency refers to the feeling of control over one's actions, and their consequences. It involves both predictive processes linked to action control, and retrospective 'sense-making' causal inferences. Schizophrenia has been associated with impaired predictive processing, but the underlying mechanisms that impair patients' sense of agency remain unclear. We introduce a new 'prospective' aspect of agency and show that subliminally priming an action not only influences response times, but also influences reported sense of agency over subsequent action outcomes. This effect of priming was

Posttraumatic symptoms and poor sleep are independent pathways to agency disruptions and dissociation: A longitudinal study with objective sleep assessment.

Dissociation and diminished sense of agency are experiential distortions of disintegration in the perception of self and action. Although one is often implied in the other, they are seldom studied together. Assessing their relationship and shared influences may allow for a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of dissociative experiences. We aimed to examine their temporal (concurrent or directional) co-occurrence, and to elucidate their etiology, focusing on posttraumatic symptoms (PTS), poor sleep, and their hypothesized joint effect. N = 113 adults oversampled for the existence of tr
