INTRODUCTION: Serratia marcescens is a facultative anaerobic bacillus that very rarely causes sternal infections. We describe a sternal abscess resulting from chronic S. marcescens infection that presented 13 years after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG).
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 71-year-old diabetic man presented 13 years after CABG with a new distal sternal "mass" that intermittently drained purulent fluid. He was treated with oral antibiotics, but the symptoms persisted. Exploration revealed an abscess extending to the sternal body. A non-absorbable braided suture and a sternal wi

Serratia marcescens is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. It has emerged in recent years as an opportunistic pathogen of nosocomial infections. Some biotypes of Serratia marcescens produce the non-diffusible red pigment prodigiosin. Though both pigmented and non-pigmented biotypes may be pathogenic for humans, the non-pigmented biotypes are more virulent due to cytotoxin production and presence of plasmids mediating antibiotic resistance. However in India only one study done 31 years back has reported on infections caused by non-pigmented strains of Serratia marcescens. We present a ca

This study was originally designed to collect data on the natural history of inhalational anthrax in a new nonhuman primate model. An uncontrollable event created a new experimental condition which allowed us to retrospectively evaluate the power of the innate immune system to protect from an aerosol exposure of B. anthracis. Five African green monkeys (AGMs) had intravenous catheters implanted. One catheter was accidentally pulled out, leaving four AGMs with catheters and one without. All were exposed, to multiple lethal doses of B. anthracis Ames strain. Blood was collected twice daily to ev

We report a case of postsurgical wound infection of polymicrobial etiology caused by Serratia marcescens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa following the use of a radial forearm free flap for oncological tongue reconstruction. S. marcescens was a producer of SHV-12 extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL). This is the first report from India of this ESBL. S. marcescens and P. aeruginosa were resistant to the empirical perioperative antibiotics administered. Delay in the recognition of the type of infection and in the institution of appropriate therapy resulted in total loss of the free flap.

BACKGROUND: Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic pathogen increasingly associated with healthcare-associated infections and rising antimicrobial resistance. The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and carbapenem-resistant S. marcescens (CRSM) presents significant therapeutic challenges. However, data on the clinical and microbiological analyses of these infections remain limited.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 242 hospitalized patients with S. marcescens infections admitted to Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, China, from January 2012 to December 2020. Clinical characteristics, a

BACKGROUND: Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic AmpC β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales associated with intensive care unit outbreaks, causing high morbidity and mortality. The spatiotemporal dynamics of Serratia species and their implications for hospital infection prevention and control remain understudied.
METHODS: We prospectively identified patient culture specimens in a multihospital academic healthcare system from 2022 to 2024. We included first-time isolates of S. marcescens identified via culture and confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass

The bacterium Serratia marcescens can cause opportunistic infections in humans and in animals. In veterinary settings, the diversity, reservoirs and modes of transmission of this pathogen are poorly understood. The phenotypes and genotypes of Serratia spp. isolated from dogs, cats, horses, a bird and a rabbit examined at an Australian veterinary hospital between 2008 and 2019 were characterised. The isolates were identified as S. marcescens (n = 15) or S. ureilytica (n = 3) and were placed into four distinct phylogenetic groups. Nine quasi-clonal isolates associated with post-surgical complica

Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens) commonly induces refractory infection due to its multidrug-resistant nature. To date, there have been no reports on the application of phage treatment for S. marcescens infection. This study was conducted to explore the feasibility of phage application in treating refractory S. marcescens infection by collaborating with a 59-year-old male patient with a pulmonary infection of multidrug-resistant S. marcescens. Our experiments included three domains: i) selection of the appropriate phage, ii) verification of the efficacy and safety of the selected phage, iii)

OBJECTIVE: To report an outbreak of multi drug resistant Serratia infection in a tertiary level neonatal unit from eastern India.
METHOD: Relevant data were retrieved from review of medical records. Standard methods for management of outbreak were carried out, and numerous infection control measures were implemented.
RESULT: Out of the 6 reported cases of Serratia marcescens blood stream infections, majority were premature and all of them had a prior exposure to broad spectrum antibiotics. Most of the neonates (83.3%) survived. Median time of onset of symptoms was 22.5 (range: 2-83) days. Re

BACKGROUND: We describe the investigations for control of two consecutive Serratia marcescens outbreaks in neonatology unit of Singapore General Hospital.
METHODS: Epidemiological investigations, environmental sampling and risk-factors analysis were performed to guide infection control measures. Active surveillance sampling of nasopharyngeal aspirate and/or stool from neonates was conducted during both outbreaks. Whole-genome-sequencing was done to determine clonal links. Retrospective case-control study was conducted for second outbreak to identify risk factors for S marcescens acquisition.

A case of bilateral subcondylar impacted mandibular third molars is presented. Both impactions had associated dentigerous cyst, one of which was severely infected with Serratia marcescens and had a draining sinus tract. The patient also had uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and iron deficiency anemia, which altered her response to surgical treatment. This case illustrates the necessity for early identification of infective organisms and determining their antibiotic sensitivity, as well as the need for prophylactic removal of impacted teeth to prevent complications such as those presented.

A 16-year-old female Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) died two days after recognition of conjunctivitis in the right eye, anorexia and depression. Gross necropsy revealed a thick pseudomembrane under the eyelid and hydropericardium. Histopathological examination revealed hepatocellular necrosis, sinusoidal and vascular congestion and infiltrated inflammatory cells. Infiltration by inflammatory cells was noted in the epicardium. The lungs had mild interstitial pneumonia with the extensive congestion within the capillaries of the air sacs. Tubular interstitial congestion and necrosis was noted in

Diabetic foot infections are commonly caused by Gram-positive cocci and Enterobacteriaceae. Isolation of Serratia fonticola is very rare. Here, we report a case of multidrug-resistant Serratia fonticola isolated from a chronic diabetic foot ulcer in a patient with poorly controlled diabetes. The case highlights the importance of microbiological evaluation in non-healing wounds and raises awareness of unusual resistant pathogens in routine clinical practice. A 56-year-old female patient with poorly controlled diabetes developed a non-healing foot ulcer following minor trauma. Culture revealed m

The mosquito gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in regulating arbovirus transmission, yet the specific antiviral metabolites produced by native symbiotic bacteria and their underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we isolated a natural gut symbiotic bacterium, Serratia marcescens strain WZ1, from field-caught Aedes albopictus in Wenzhou, China, and demonstrated its potent ability to inhibit dengue virus (DENV) infection. Through integrated metabolomic analysis, we identified the red pigment prodigiosin (PG) as a functional antiviral metabolite secreted by this strain. PG

BACKGROUND: The field of cosmetic filler injection has experienced rapid development over the past two decades, especially in facial augmentation utilizing hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. Gram-negative bacteria are found to be the main pathogens of infective nodules after HA injection. The occurrence of cutaneous infections attributed to Serratia marcescens is exceedingly rare and predominantly noted in patients with compromised immune systems.
AIMS: To summarize the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of subcutaneous infection caused by Serratia marcescens following hyaluronic acid inj
