Prevalence of coeliac disease in siblings of patients with Type I diabetes is related to the prevalence of DQB1*02 allele.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Coeliac disease is more prevalent among patients with Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and coeliac disease-related antibodies have been reported to increase in frequency in their first-degree relatives. Our aim was to find out if coeliac disease is more common among siblings of children with Type I diabetes than in the normal population. METHODS: IgA endomysium antibodies were measured by indirect immunofluorescence in 550 subjects (mean age 11.8 years, range 3.1-26.9 years) with a sibling with Type I diabetes. We performed jejunal biopsy on as many subjects with

Prenatal gender preference of mothers of feminine and masculine boys: relation to sibling sex composition and birth order.

A mother's (prenatal) wish for a girl has, at times, been implicated as an etiological factor for boyhood femininity or its DSM-III-R diagnostic equivalent, the Gender Identity Disorder of Childhood. In one sample of 52 feminine and 52 nonclinical control boys from Los Angeles, the proportion of mothers who recalled a wish for a girl during the pregnancy did not differ significantly between groups (26.9% vs. 19.2%, respectively); however, in both groups, the maternal wish for a girl was significantly more common in sibships in which all of the proband's older siblings were male. In a second sa

Anxiety, social responsiveness, and grit among patients with KCNJ11-related neonatal diabetes compared to unaffected siblings.

AIMS: Neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) occurs before 6-12 months of age and is commonly caused by activating mutations in KCNJ11 (KCNJ11-NDM) or ABCC8. Because of brain expression of these mutant ATP-dependent potassium channels, a spectrum of divergent neurodevelopmental difficulties have been described, including developmental delay, epilepsy, and neonatal diabetes (DEND). However, information on anxiety, social responsiveness, and grit is limited. METHODS: Individuals with KCNJ11-NDM (N = 12) and their unaffected siblings (N = 12) were recruited through the University of Chicago Monogenic

Parietal lobe and thalamic nuclei volumetry in first-episode psychosis: Relation with trauma in a paired sibling study.

Volumetric changes in the parietal lobe of patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) remain underexplored, despite previous studies suggesting some structural abnormalities in this region. This cortical area, connected to the thalamus, is part of networks that have been linked to cognitive impairments in the schizophrenia spectrum. In this study, we processed structural MRI images using FreeSurfer to investigate the parietal cortex and thalamic nuclei in a cohort of 30 participants across three groups: 10 FEP patients, 10 unaffected siblings, and 10 matched healthy controls. We also examined

Parental attitudes and practices in families with siblings with and without intellectual disability: Influences of sociodemographic and child-related factors.

BACKGROUND: Parenting styles and attitudes are a relevant factor of a child's developmental environment. When parents raise both a child with an intellectual disability and a typically developing (TD) sibling, their approaches may differ due to factors related to the child, family, and social context. This study explored whether parenting styles and attitudes are consistent across children and examined whether sociodemographic and child-related factors explain variations in parenting behaviors. METHOD: Ninety-five parents with one child diagnosed with intellectual disability (according to DSM

Siblings with profound connective tissue disease: First report of biallelic TGFBR1-related Loeys-Dietz syndrome.

Heterozygous missense variants in TGFBR1, encoding one subunit of the transforming growth factor-beta receptor, are a well-established cause of Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS)-an autosomal dominant disorder with variable phenotypic expression. Patients with LDS have compromised connective tissues that can result in life-threatening arterial aneurysms, craniosynostosis, characteristic craniofacial and skeletal anomalies, skin translucency, and abnormal wound healing. We report a full sibship with a biallelic type of TGFBR1-related disease. Each born at 38 weeks had aortic root dilation, congenital d

A multilevel analysis of health-related physical fitness. The Portuguese sibling study on growth, fitness, lifestyle and health.

This study investigates biological, behavioural and sociodemographic correlates of intra-pair similarities, and estimates sibling resemblance in health-related physical fitness (PF). The sample comprises 1101 biological siblings (525 females) aged 9-20 years. PF components and markers were: morphological [waist circumference (WC) and %body fat (%BF)], muscular [handgrip strength (GS) and standing long jump (SLJ)], motor [50-yard dash (50YD) and shuttle run (SR)], and cardiorespiratory (1-mile run). Biological maturation was assessed; physical activity (PA), TV viewing and socioeconomic status

Illnesses in siblings of US patients with bipolar disorder relate to multigenerational family history and patients severity of illness.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder from the US have more early-onset illness and a greater familial loading for psychiatric problems than those from the Netherlands or Germany (abbreviated here as Europe). We hypothesized that these regional differences in illness burden would extend to the patients siblings. METHODS: Outpatients with bipolar disorder gave consent for participation in a treatment outcome network and for filling out detailed questionnaires. This included a family history of unipolar depression, bipolar disorder, suicide attempt, alcohol abuse/dependence, drug abuse/dep

Pattern of brain activation during social cognitive tasks is related to social competence in siblings discordant for schizophrenia.

Measures of social competence are closely related to actual community functioning in patients with schizophrenia. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying competence in schizophrenia are not fully understood. We hypothesized that social deficits in schizophrenia are explained, at least in part, by abnormally lateralized patterns of brain activation in response to tasks engaging social cognition, as compared to healthy individuals. We predicted such patterns would be partly heritable, and therefore affected in patients' nonpsychotic siblings as well. We used a functional magnetic reso

Relations between molecular and biological abnormalities in 11 families from siblings affected with methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase deficiency.

UNLABELLED: Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency is an autosomal recessive disorder resulting in elevated homocysteine levels in plasma and urine. MTHFR catalyses the reduction of methylenetetrahydrofolate to methyltetrahydrofolate, a cofactor for homocysteine remethylation to methionine. MTHFR deficiency may be diagnosed from infancy to adulthood with a broad spectrum of clinical symptoms. A molecular analysis of the MTHFR gene combined with an assessment of MTHFR activity, plasma homocysteine and folate in plasma and red blood cells (RBC), especially methylfolate, was asses

Sibling Relationship Profiles of Autistic Youths in a Social-Ecological Context.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify profiles of autistic youths' sibling relations and examined if social-ecological variables (i.e., youth characteristics, family and caregiver functioning, peer relations, academic performance) were associated with these profiles. METHOD: Caregivers (N = 2,142; 88.1% mothers) of autistic youths aged 6-17 years (M = 11.07 years; SD = 3.17; 80.1% male) completed electronic measures assessing social-ecological variables and youths' sibling relations. We used a latent profile analysis (LPA) to define sibling relation profiles based on the qualities (emotional

Is PNPT1-related hearing loss ever non-syndromic? Whole exome sequencing of adult siblings expands the natural history of PNPT1-related disorders.

PNPT1 is a mitochondrial RNA transport protein that has been linked to two discrete phenotypes, namely isolated sensorineural hearing loss (OMIM 614934) and combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency (OMIM 614932). The latter has been described in multiple families presenting with complex neurologic manifestations in childhood. We describe adult siblings with biallelic PNPT1 variants identified through WES who presented with isolated severe congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). In their 40s, they each developed and then followed a nearly identical neurodegenerative course with ataxi

Relations Between Preferential Looking to Synchronous Audiovisual Speech and Expressive Language in Infants With Autistic and Non-Autistic Siblings.

Differences in audiovisual processing may influence language development in autism. We characterized preferential looking to temporally synchronous audiovisual speech in fifty infants (28 elevated-likelihood [54% male]; 22 population-level-likelihood [50% male]) aged 12-18 months. We first tested whether preferential looking to synchronous audiovisual speech differed between groups; population-level-likelihood infants demonstrated greater preferential looking to synchronous audiovisual speech relative to elevated-likelihood infants by 18 months. We then assessed whether preferential looking to

Exploring Relations Between Psychological Capital, Social Support and Self-Compassion Among Siblings of Individuals With Developmental Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: We examined correlations between psychological capital (PsyCap), social support and self-compassion among siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities versus siblings of individuals without developmental disabilities. METHODS: We hypothesized that (1) there would be positive correlations between PsyCap, social support and self-compassion at the sample level and within each group; (2) siblings of individuals without developmental disabilities would exhibit lower levels of these variables than siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities; and (3) relations betw

Recurrent RAC3 related neuro-rachopathy in a pair of Indian siblings with novel findings: expanding the spectrum of brain anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: The Rho GTPase gene family plays a crucial role in key cellular functions. RAC3, one of the three genes in this family, along with RAC1 and RAC2, is highly expressed in the brain. It is specifically involved in neuronal differentiation, maturation, and migration. Therefore, dysregulation of RAC3 can lead to neurodevelopmental abnormalities. METHODS: Here we report two siblings, born to a nonconsanguineous couple, with global developmental delay, intellectual disability, and facial dysmorphism. RESULTS: Whole exome sequencing revealed a pathogenic heterozygous variant, c.184G>A (p.

The Health and Health-Related Quality of Life Impacts of Having a Sibling on Probation or Parole in the United States: A Focused Ethnography.

In this study, we explored the experiences of adult siblings of brothers who have been on probation or parole and the impacts on the participants' health and health-related quality of life. We conducted semi-structured interviews and focused field observations of 8 adult siblings. The major themes were siblings being primary support providers , feelings of existing in a perpetual state of unknown , and perceived needs and resources . These themes reflected the types of support that participants provided; the associated strains and instability perpetuated by the criminal legal system; and the p

Associations of parental and perinatal factors with subsequent risk of stress-related disorders: a nationwide cohort study with sibling comparison.

Little is known about the contribution of pregnancy-related parental and perinatal factors to the development of stress-related disorders. We aimed to investigate whether parental/perinatal adversities entail higher risks of stress-related disorders in the offspring, later in life, by accounting for genetic and early environmental factors. Based on the nationwide Swedish registers, we conducted a population-based cohort study of 3,435,747 singleton births (of which 2,554,235 were full siblings), born 1973-2008 and survived through the age of 5 years. Using both population- and sibling designs,

Foetal onset of EIF2B related disorder in two siblings: cerebellar hypoplasia with absent Bergmann glia and severe hypomyelination.

Bi-allelic pathogenic variants in genes of the EIF2B family are responsible for Childhood Ataxia with Central nervous system Hypomyelination/Vanishing White Matter disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of the central white matter. Only seven molecularly proven cases with antenatal onset have been reported so far.
