Visualization of uniparental inheritance, Mendelian inconsistencies, deletions, and parent of origin effects in single nucleotide polymorphism trio data with SNPtrio.

A variety of alterations occur in chromosomal DNA, many of which can be detected using high density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarrays. These include deletions and duplications (assessed by observing changes in copy number) and regions of homozygosity. The analysis of SNP data from trios can provide an additional category of information about the nature and origin of inheritance patterns, including uniparental disomy (UPD), loss of transmitted allele (LTA), and nonparental relationship. The main purpose of SNPtrio is to locate regions of uniparental inheritance (UPI) and Mendelia

Single-parent family background and physical illness in adulthood: a follow-up study of the Northern Finland 1966 birth cohort.

The association between single-parent family background and physical illness in early adulthood was studied in a sample of an unselected, general population: the Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort. Between the ages of 16 and 28 years, women of single-parent family background were more commonly treated (61% versus 57%) for any physical condition in hospital wards compared with women of two-parent family background. Spontaneous abortions (odds ratio; OR = 1.4, 95% CI 1.0-2.0), complications of pregnancy (OR = 1.1, 95% CI 1.0-1.3), and intracranial injuries (OR = 2.0, 95% CI 1.0-3.8) were more co

Evaluation of a Parent Multimedia and Mobile-Based Intervention to Promote Pediatric Oral Health (BeReadyToSmile): Single-Group Pre-Post Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: The universal adoption of mobile technologies by households has created an opportunity to provide families with young children with access to high-quality oral health information at convenient times and locations. Using community agencies (eg, Head Start and public health programs) that offer parenting education is an effective approach to reaching families in low-income households. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the extent to which a coordinated, in-person oral health prevention intervention, together with an accompanying smartphone app, BeReadyToSmile, is feasible to imp

Supporting children on therapy waitlists: A randomized controlled trial of a web-based parent-focused single session intervention for child anxiety.

Many children experience significant, impairing anxiety, yet most never access evidence-based support; among those who do, most face long wait-times to be seen. This disconnect reflects a need for intervention approaches that provide rapid access to interim care. Single-session interventions (SSIs) may help mitigate the adverse impacts of long waitlists. This pilot parallel group RCT evaluated the effectiveness and acceptability of a self-guided, web-based SSI delivered to parents of children ages 4-13 (Mage = 8.84) with anxiety or OCD on a waitlist at a hospital-based Cognitive-Behavioral The

Genetic Analysis of the Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms rs880810, rs545793, rs80094639, and rs13251901 in Nonsyndromic Oral Clefts: A Case-Parent Trio Study.

Oral clefts, including cleft lip (CL), cleft palate (CP), and cleft lip and palate (CLP), are the most common types of congenital anomalies of the human face. Various genetic and environmental factors play a role in developing oral clefts. Several studies have shown the association of the PAX7 gene and the 8q24 region with these oral clefts in different populations worldwide. However, there are no reported studies on the possible connection between the PAX7 gene and the 8q24 region nucleotide variants and the risk of developing nonsyndromic oral clefts (NSOC) in the Indian population. Hence, t

Brief Report: Telehealth Music-Enhanced Reciprocal Imitation Training in Autism: A Single-Subject Feasibility Study of a Virtual Parent Coaching Intervention.

PURPOSE: Telehealth delivery increases accessibility of parent-mediated interventions that teach parents skills and support autistic children's social communication. Reciprocal Imitation Training (RIT), an evidence-based Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI) focused on imitation skills, a common difficulty in autism, holds promise for telehealth-based parent training. Imitation is also a core component of musical play during childhood and the affordances of musical play/song naturally shape parent-child interactions. We evaluate the feasibility of a music-based, telehealth

Engineering STRAIGHT-IN single and dual lines in the male iPS11 parental line for programmable DNA integration.

STRAIGHT-IN is a genome engineering platform that enables precise integration of DNA payloads into mammalian genomes, including hiPSCs. In this study, we generated three hiPSC acceptor lines containing either one (single) or two (dual) landing pads. These landing pads support efficient, seamless integration of DNA cargos with single-copy control and a near-scarless genomic footprint. All landing pads were targeted to the CLYBL genomic safe harbor locus in the male hiPSC line iPS11. The resulting acceptor lines offer a versatile resource for the controlled genomic integration of diverse transge

School results in single-suture craniosynostosis: what should we tell parents at the first consultation?

BACKGROUND: Parents of children diagnosed with nonsyndromic single-suture craniosynostosis (SSC) frequently ask whether school difficulties should be expected and what type of monitoring is appropriate over time. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize evidence on school-related outcomes in SSC and translate it into counselling guidance for the first consultation. METHODS: We conducted a structured narrative review with a systematic literature search. PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus were searched from database inception to January 2026 using terms related to craniosynostosis, single-suture disease, school achiev

Sex-specific behavioral and physiological changes during single parenting in a biparental species, Columba livia.

Many species exhibit biparental care to maximize fitness. When a partner is lost, the surviving partner may alter their behavior to compensate offspring. Whether both sexes use the same physiological mechanisms to manifest their change in behavior remains elusive. We investigated behaviors and mechanisms associated with the alteration of parental care post-partner removal in a biparental avian species, the rock dove (Columba livia). We hypothesized that rock dove single parents experience sex-biased changes in neural genomic transcription and reproductive behaviors, and these changes are relat

Risks and benefits of the single versus the triple MMR vaccine: how can health professionals reassure parents?

Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) are all preventable but infectious diseases caused by viruses. A particular study by Wakefield et al suggests that there are potentially adverse effects of having the triple MMR vaccine. This has been reported widely by the media and has caused alarm to parents of young children, probably contributing to the decline in its uptake. In order to provide the context for the debate regarding the single versus the triple vaccine, this paper briefly appraises firstly, the Wakefield et al research paper that has led to public health concerns and secondly, a more rigoro
