[Sneddon's syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus with cerebrovascular disturbances and widespread livedo].

A comparative clinical and instrumental analysis of 97 patients with Sneddon's syndrome (SS), a combination of cerebrovascular ischemic disturbances with widespread livedo, and 12 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with the same combination, has been conducted. Despite the presence of similar features related to antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)--cerebrovascular disturbances, livedo, fetal loss, peripheral venous thrombosis, thrombocytopenia, antibodies to phospholipids, etc--there were distinct differences between SS and SLE. In SS, no skin lesions ("butterfly", discoid lupus, pho

Sneddon's syndrome: neuro-ophthalmologic manifestations in a possible autosomal recessive pattern.

Sneddon's syndrome is a rare neurodermatologic disorder that is manifested by multiple cerebrovascular accidents and livedo reticularis. The authors describe two siblings from one family with Sneddon's syndrome, suggesting autosomal recessive inheritance. The propositus presented with internuclear ophthalmoplegia and ophthalmic artery occlusion. These manifestations as well as the autosomal recessive inheritance have not yet been reported in Sneddon's syndrome.

[Sex and gonadotropic hormones in arteriopathy with lesions of the brain and skin (Sneddon's syndrome)].

Changed levels of sex and gonadotropic hormones in the follicular and lutein phases of the menstrual cycle have been revealed in 12 women with Sneddon's syndrome. The detected disorders contribute to the genesis of obstetrical and gynecological abnormalities and of arteriopathy, which are characteristic of this syndrome. Reduced testosterone levels in 3 female and 4 male patients correlate with disordered sexual function.

A case series of Sneddon syndrome: clinical features, diagnostic workup, and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Sneddon syndrome, a rare, non-inflammatory thrombotic vasculopathy characterized by livedo racemosa and cerebrovascular disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case series of six women diagnosed with Sneddon syndrome. We conducted a thorough analysis of clinical, radiological, and laboratory data, including results of prothrombotic and autoimmune screening. Our findings emphasize the importance of considering Sneddon syndrome as a potential cause of stroke, particularly in young women, and underscore the necessity of a comprehensive dermatological examination when evaluating stro

Pediatric Sneddon syndrome presenting with early-onset liver fibrosis: a rare case report.

Sneddon syndrome (SS) is a rare neurocutaneous disorder consisting of livedo racemosa (LR) and cerebrovascular disease with an incidence of 4 per 1 000 000 annually. It may be idiopathic or associated with autoimmune or genetic factors, including deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2). We describe a 17-month-old girl with recurrent fevers, hepatosplenomegaly, LR, and progressive liver fibrosis. A pathogenic ADA2 mutation and LDLR mutation associated with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) were detected by genetic testing. Despite corticosteroids, etanercept, and immunosuppressants, she co

Gradually progressive dementia without discrete cerebrovascular events in a patient with Sneddon's syndrome.

A 37-year-old man sought medical advice because of an 8-year history of a slowly progressive dementing illness with no clinically apparent discrete strokelike episodes. Cognitive functioning was markedly, globally impaired without lateralizing or localizing features. Widespread livedo reticularis led to a diagnosis of Sneddon's syndrome. Antiphospholipid antibodies and lupus anticoagulant were negative. Magnetic resonance imaging showed widespread cerebral atrophy, cortical and subcortical cerebral infarcts, and extensive periventricular white matter abnormalities. Cerebral angiography reveale

[Livedo reticularis, cerebrovascular disorders and mitral disease: a new cause of Sneddon's syndrome?].

Sneddon's syndrome consists of livedo reticularis and cerebral vascular accidents with no evidence of systemic disease responsible for the livedo. The syndrome has been assimilated to a subgroup of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with presence of antibodies directed against phospholipids. Recently, a significant increase in the frequency of cardiac valve diseases has been demonstrated in some SLE patients with livedo reticularis, cerebral vascular accidents and antiphospholipid antibodies. We report the case of a 26-year old woman who had been presenting for 6 years with idiopathic livedo r

Sneddon syndrome: under diagnosed disease, complex clinical manifestations and challenging diagnosis. A case-based review.

Herein, we report a case-based review of the Sneddon Syndrome (SS), a rare chronic condition which affects small to medium blood vessels. It is known by its skin presentation, livedo racemosa (LRC), and the relapsing cerebrovascular events. However, neither LRC nor cerebrovascular events are exclusive to SS. A 36-year-old female with history of mitral valve prolapse, hypothyroidism, Raynaud phenomenon, hypertension, migraines, and four episodes of transient ischemic attacks (TIA), presented to our clinic with new skin findings, suggestive of LRC. Based on her previous history, current presenta

[Cerebrovascular disorders associated with livedo (Sneddon's syndrome): its relation to lupus anticoagulant].

The clinical manifestations of Sneddon's syndrome (cerebrovascular disorder, livedo reticularis, peripheral venous thrombosis++, cardiac pathology, obstetric pathology--fetal loss and intrauterine fetal death) are characteristic of the antiphospholipid syndrome. A lupus anticoagulant (LA), one of the types of antiphospholipid antibodies, was detected in the blood plasma of 18 out of 30 patients with Sneddon's syndrome. The negative results of LA-examination in 12 patients don't exclude the presence of other antiphospholipid antibodies. So 16 of 30 patients had anticardiolipin antibodies, among

Characteristic imaging features of neurovascular involvement in primary Sneddon's syndrome: an analysis of 12 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Sneddon's syndrome is a cerebrocutaneous non-inflammatory progressive distal arteriopathy, characterized by livedo racemosa, stroke, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Our aim was to highlight the characteristic neuroimaging features of Sneddon's syndrome that might be helpful to clinicians in timely diagnosis of this entity. METHODS: Twelve patients (median age 49 years, 11 female) with primary Sneddon's syndrome, diagnosed in last 10 years, were analyzed from the perspective of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features. In addition, a novel pseudoangiomatosis score was defined for gr

Acute central retinal artery occlusion associated with livedoid vasculopathy: a variant of Sneddon's syndrome.

Livedoid vasculopathy (LV) is characterized by a long history of ulceration of the feet and legs and histopathology indicating a thrombotic process. We report a case of acute central retinal artery occlusion in a 32-year-old woman who had LV. She showed no discernible laboratory abnormalities such as antiphospholipid antibodies and no history of cerebrovascular accidents. Attempted intra-arterial thrombolysis showed no effect in restoring retinal arterial perfusion or vision. The central retinal artery occlusion accompanied by LV in this case could be regarded as a variant form of Sneddon's sy

Recurrent transient global amnesia in a case with cerebrovascular lesions and livedo reticularis (Sneddon Syndrome).

Eight attacks of transient global amnesia were observed in a female patient who suffered from livedo reticularis and a series of other neurological symptoms, which were transient in most stances. The neurological deficits include focal epileptic attacks, unilateral loss of vision, paresis of left arm and/or leg and dysarthria. The first amnestic attack was seen at the age of 19. The episodes lasted from a few to 3 days. The intervals between the amnestic episodes varied between a few days and 11 years. The livedo reticularis became more obvious during each neurological episode and was less pro

A combination of livedo racemosa, occlusion of cerebral blood vessels, and nephropathy: kidney involvement in Sneddon's syndrome.

A 59-year-old woman with retinal vein thrombosis and livedo racemosa had hematuria (4+) and proteinuria (1.7 g/day). Skin biopsy showed swollen blood vessel walls with infiltration of mononuclear cells, which were compatible with livedo racemosa (vasculitis). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain demonstrated multiple lacunar infarctions in the basal ganglia and white matter. Renal biopsy showed that small round cells had infiltrated into the interstitium, and a reticular structure was observed in the glomerular hilus. An amorphous substance composed of a single cell was present in the

Livedo reticularis and cerebrovascular lesions (Sneddon's syndrome). Clinical, radiological and pathological features in eight cases.

Eight patients with diffuse livedo reticularis and cerebrovascular lesions (Sneddon's syndrome) are reported. The disorder was inherited by autosomal dominant transmission in 3 cases. Multiple occlusions in medium-sized arteries were demonstrated by cerebral and hand arteriograms. Digital artery biopsies showed intimal hyperplasia in 7 cases and recanalized thrombosis in one case. Our findings are compared with an extensive review of the literature. Sneddon syndrome: rare disease or under diagnosed clinical entity? Review of the literature related to a clinical case.

Sneddon syndrome is defined by the association of livedo racemosa and recurrent cerebrovascular ischemic lesions. The annual incidence is 4/1,000,000. This syndrome particularly affects young women, some reports suggesting a family predisposition. It is a chronic, progressive, arterio-occlusive disease of unknown etiology that involves small and medium-sized arteries. It is usually associated with antiphospholipid antibodies. We report the case of a female patient with Sneddon syndrome with significant family history, personal history of stroke, epilepsy, migraine, cardiovascular involvement,

Superficial Siderosis and Microbleed Restricted in Cortex Might Be Correlated to Atrophy and Cognitive Decline in Sneddon's Syndrome.

Objective: Sneddon's syndrome is a rare non-inflammatory arteriopathy affecting small and medium-sized arteries, characterized by a generalized livedo reticularis and recurrent transient ischemic attack or ischemic stroke. Hemorrhagic stroke was reported in limited cases, but microbleeds and superficial siderosis were rarely issued. We aimed to investigate the hemorrhagic imaging features of Sneddon's syndrome and explore the possible mechanism and clinical relevance. Methods: Clinical data and cerebral MR imaging including T2* sequence of seven consecutive patients with Sneddon's syndrome wer

[Divry-Van Bogaert cortico-meningeal angiomatosis and Sneddon's syndrome. Nosological study. Apropos of 4 cases].

Four patients with idiopathic livedo reticularis and multiple cerebral ischemic events leading to a severe dementia are reported. Imaging (CT, MRI, angiograms) and pathological features (in one case) are presented. Similar clinical features have been described previously in Divry-van Bogaert's disease and Sneddon's syndrome. Data from our cases and a review of the literature did not find distinctive characteristic between these entities. Thus, for practical purposes, considering them as one group appears at present warranted.
