Visceral leishmaniasis in Somalia: A review of epidemiology and access to care.

Somalia, ravaged by conflict since 1991, has areas endemic for visceral leishmaniasis (VL), a deadly parasitic disease affecting the rural poor, internally displaced, and pastoralists. Very little is known about VL burden in Somalia, where the protracted crisis hampers access to health care. We reviewed evidence about VL epidemiology in Somalia and appraised control options within the context of this fragile state's health system. VL has been reported in Somalia since 1934 and has persisted ever since in foci in the southern parts of the country. The only feasible VL control option is early di

Penile glans amputation following untrained male circumcision in rural Somalia: A case report of a rare but serious complication in a resource-limited setting Somalia.

In many African communities, including Somalia, traditional male circumcision remains a deeply rooted cultural practice. However, when performed by untrained individuals in resource-limited settings, it can result in severe complications. We report the case of a one-year-old Somali boy who suffered complete penile glans amputation after circumcision by a traditional practitioner using non-sterile instruments. The child developed urinary obstruction and swelling, with delayed access to medical care. At a tertiary hospital, reconstructive surgery was unavailable, and referral abroad was required

Strengthening Clinical Epidemiology in Somalia: Challenges, Opportunities, and Future Directions.

Clinical epidemiology constitutes a foundational pillar of evidence-based medicine and health system strengthening. This commentary examines the current state of clinical epidemiology in Somalia and is intended to stimulate scholarly dialogue and policy action among Somali and international health stakeholders, situating the discussion within the country's broader trajectory of health system recovery and evidence-based decision-making. Despite Somalia's substantial disease burden, clinical epidemiology remains critically underdeveloped, constrained by structural, infrastructural, academic, and

Beyond family donors: building reliable emergency blood access in Somalia.

•Dependence on family or replacement donors can make access to emergency transfusion reactive rather than reliably available at the point of care, a problem directly relevant to trauma, obstetric haemorrhage, and urgent surgery in resource-constrained African settings.•Somalia-specific evidence shows that family donors can dominate local blood supply and that emergency blood transfusion services remain limited across surveyed hospitals, making reliable blood access an important emergency-care systems issue.•The correspondence proposes a practical shift from patient-triggered donor mobilisation

Visceral Leishmaniasis Service Delivery in Somalia: A Comprehensive Literature Review.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that affects millions of people globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. It is caused by the Leishmania parasite, transmitted through sandfly bites, leading to severe illness and high mortality if untreated. Globally, VL is prevalent in East Africa, South Asia, and parts of South America, with East Africa accounting for a significant proportion of cases. Somalia, a country with a fragile healthcare system, faces a growing burden of the disease, particularly in rural and conflict-affected areas. Despite efforts

Prescribed medication use among troops deploying to Somalia: pharmacoepidemiologic analysis.

To describe the frequency of chronic ambulatory prescriptions dispensed to troops, pharmacists analyzed records of soldiers deploying to Somalia for Operation Restore Hope. Prescriptions recorded in the Fort Drum pharmacy data base for soldiers deploying between November 24, 1992, and January 12, 1993, were compared to the roster of troops deployed. Among 3,701 deploying soldiers, 273 patients (7.4%) received 425 prescriptions. For each 1,000 troops, 114.8 prescriptions were dispensed. Of 333 presumptive diagnoses, the most common diagnostic groups were contraceptive, musculoskeletal, dermatol

Spontaneous true brachial artery aneurysm: A case report from Somalia.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: True brachial artery aneurysms are rather uncommon, due to their number of etiological factors. Besides inducing symptoms such as hand or digit ischemia, they may present as pulsative tumefactions and cause pain or paresthesias through nerve impingement. The diagnosis is based on duplex ultrasonography, CTA in the operational planning phase, and a physical examination. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28 year old female patient was attending our center with pain and swelling of the left arm because of a brachial artery aneurysm. The patient underwent successful excision of th

Susceptibility of Ethiopian bulinid snails to Schistosoma haematobium from Somalia.

Susceptibility of four Ethiopian bulinid snails to a Somalian strain of S. haematobium was tested. Bulinus abyssinicus was highly susceptible and lowland B. africanus was partially susceptible while B. truncatus and B. forskalii were refractory to the parasite. It is suggested that Ethiopian refugees returning from Somalia and/or Somalian refugees entering Ethiopia should be screened and treated for S. haematobium before they are allowed to work/resettle in development areas where B. abyssinicus and B. africanus are known or ecologically suspected to occur.

Oral Health in Somalia: Unmasking a Neglected Dimension of Public Health.

Oral health is a fundamental but neglected component of public health, with important consequences for nutrition, communication, dignity, quality of life, and noncommunicable disease (NCD) prevention. In Somalia, oral health remains poorly integrated into health policy and service delivery within a context shaped by health-system fragility, displacement, humanitarian pressures, and limited workforce capacity. This perspective synthesizes available Somalia-specific evidence alongside modeled national estimates and relevant regional evidence to examine the burden, determinants, access barriers,
