As well as being the hallmark of mathematics disorders, deficits in number processing have also been reported for individuals with reading disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate separately the components of numerical processing affected in reading and mathematical disorders within the framework of the Triple Code Model. Children with reading disorders (RD), mathematics disorders (MD), comorbid deficits (RD + MD), and typically developing children (TD) were tested on verbal, visual-verbal, and nonverbal number tasks. As expected, children with MD were impaired across a broad

This study investigates the effectiveness of a social-emotional skills training program on emotional dysregulation and psychological distress among students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD). The quasi-experimental design involved 32 fourth- to sixth-grade students diagnosed with learning disorders, who were individually randomly assigned to an experimental group receiving the intervention or a control group. The training, implemented in a school setting, consisted of 12 sessions focused on enhancing self-awareness, emotional regulation, and social skills. Pre- and post-test assessments m

BACKGROUND: The transition of teaching from in-person to Distance Learning (DL) due to the COVID-19 pandemic led to negative effects on students' psychological wellbeing and academic achievement. The worst consequences have been experienced by students with so-called special educational needs, as well as by their parents. However, very little emphasis has been placed on the effects of DL in students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD). The present work aimed to evaluate the effects of DL during the COVID-19 lockdown in Italian students with SLD and in their parents.

This study examined how comorbid Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) and Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) shape neurocognitive and behavioral profiles of children with ADHD. The sample included 844 children aged 6-16, categorized into ADHD-only, ADHD+CDS, ADHD+SLD, and ADHD+SLD+CDS. Cognitive performance was assessed with the WISC-R, and behavioral symptoms with the Teacher Report Form. Group differences were analyzed using ANCOVA, adjusting for age, inattention, and internalizing symptoms. Children with CDS showed higher inattention, internalizing symptoms, and obsessive-compulsive traits

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) in enhancing motor-based occupational performance challenges in five children with specific learning disorders (SLDs). Five children with SLD aged 9 to 12 years, participated in a multiple-baseline single-subject experimental design. Outcome measures included the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) and the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-Edition 2 (BOT-2). The CO-OP Approach comprised 12 sessions, conducted twice weekly. Based on the BOT-2 results, the inter

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder-predominantly inattentive presentation (ADHD-I) and specific learning disorder (SLD) are commonly co-occurring conditions. Despite the considerable diagnostic overlap, the effect of SLD comorbidity on outcomes of behavioral interventions for ADHD-I remains critically understudied. The current study examines the effect of reading or math SLD comorbidity in 35 children with comorbid ADHD-I+SLD and 39 children with ADHD-I only following a behavioral treatment integrated across home and school (Child Life and Attention Skills [CLAS]). UNLABELLED: Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that significantly affects children's academic performance. This study aimed to investigate the expression levels of the MAP Kinase Interacting Serine/Threonine Kinase 1-2 (MNK1, MNK2), Synaptic Ras GTPase Activating Protein 1 (SYNGAP1) genes, and the long non-coding RNA Synaptic Ras GTPase Activating Protein 1-Anti Sense1 (SYNGAP1-AS1), which are believed to play a key role in neurodevelopmental pathways, in children with SLD. Understanding the role of these genes in synaptic plasticity and cognitive function may pr

BACKGROUND: Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by significant academic difficulties despite normal intelligence and adequate education. The difficulties with reading, writing, and arithmetic may manifest independently or concurrently at different ages. Early symptoms may appear in preschool, including delays in social skills, motor skills, and language development. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of preschool children at risk for SLD and related psychiatric disorders.
METHOD: Data were collected from 515 preschool children in Edirne City

Background Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition which frequently exhibits with comorbidities of other disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder, anxiety, and depression. SLD with any comorbidity may affect the expression and severity of the SLD and may make its management difficult. Thus, the present cross-sectional study was planned to examine the psychiatric comorbidities among children with SLD. Materials and Methods The sample consisted of 41 patients aged between 7 and 12 years with a diagnosis of SLD-mixed type. C

High comorbidity rates between reading disorder (RD) and mathematics disorder (MD) indicate that, although the cognitive core deficits underlying these disorders are distinct, additional domain-general risk factors might be shared between the disorders. Three domain-general cognitive abilities were investigated in children with RD and MD: processing speed, temporal processing, and working memory. Since attention problems frequently co-occur with learning disorders, the study examined whether these three factors, which are known to be associated with attention problems, account for the comorbid

Interventions for individuals with specific learning disabilities (SLD) largely focus on performance within a single performance domain (e.g., reading). However, it is more the rule than the exception that individuals with SLD will experience difficulties that span multiple domains (e.g., reading and mathematics), and that co-occur with other disorders (e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). In this article, we discuss what has been learned about supporting children and adolescents with SLD affecting multiple performance domains (i.e., reading and mathematics), and with common co-occ

Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) is a family of multifunctional enzymatic complexes crucial for cellular signalling, playing a pivotal role in brain function and development. Mutations in specific genes encoding PP2A complexes have been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders with hypotonia and high risk of seizures. In the current work, we present an individual with specific learning problems, motor coordination disorders, hypotonia and behavioural issues. Although whole exome sequencing (WES) did not unveil pathogenic variants in known genes related to these symptoms, a de novo heterozygou

Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) have become a major concern in modern societies. It is essential to detect their emotional, behavioral and social consequences as early as childhood. The aim of this study is to examine a set of strengths and difficulties and compare them between students with and without SLD. Participants in this study were adolescents aged 11-18 years from Budapest and villages of its Metropolitan area (Hungary) (N = 276, mean age = 13.6 years, SD = 1.8, 54.7% boys). Due to multistage sampling, a nearly equal number of students had SLD or not. In addition to sociodemographic

Several studies have linked specific learning disorders (SLDs) with suicidal ideation, but less is known about the disorders' association with suicide attempts. This gap in the literature is addressed via the 2012 nationally representative Canadian Community Health Survey ( n = 21,744). The prevalence of lifetime suicide attempts among those with an SLD was much higher than those without (11.1% vs. 2.7%, p < .001). In comparison with their peers without SLDs, adults with SLDs had 46% higher odds of having ever attempted suicide, even after adjusting for most known risk factors (e.g., childhood

Boys with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD, N = 50), Specific Learning Disorder (LD, N = 45), combined Specific Learning Disorder and ADHD (LD/ADHD, N = 25), and controls (N = 51) completed effortful and automatic information processing tasks based on Treisman and Gelade's (1980) "information integration theory". ADHD and LD/ADHD subjects did not differ from controls at baseline or under feedback and reward conditions, suggesting that they were investing similar levels of mental effort in the tasks. The LD group had a superior performance in the effortful task and an inferior per

Specific learning disorders (SLDs) account for the largest percentage of children receiving specialized instruction in schools. Despite the high prevalence, the diagnosis of SLDs is often delayed until it has had a detrimental impact on a child's academic performance and mental health, which has long-term consequences. The general pediatric provider is uniquely positioned for impactful intervention on SLDs when caring for children during critical windows of learning and development. In this article, we provide a review of the existing literature for the general pediatric provider and describe

The primary aim of this study was to examine the personality profile of adults with Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) to assess maladaptive traits and explore the underlying network structure of these traits in comparison to healthy individuals. The sample included 181 adults with SLDs (mean age = 27.37 ± 6.82; 39.21% female) and 227 healthy adults (mean age = 30.08 ± 7.49; 35.36% female). All participants completed the PID-5 and a socio-demographic checklist. Group differences in PID-5 scores were analyzed using independent-sample t-tests. Ne

Research on disabilities has generally used a deficit-oriented approach. However, the recent appreciation of the personal strengths and positive traits of the disabled has raised awareness of them as empowering and activating factors. According to the hope theory, the ability to embrace future perspectives, set meaningful goals, and plan specific paths to reach these goals predict well-being and adjustment. We review the research on the role of hope in the lives of individuals with SLD/ADHD from a developmental perspective. We investigate hope as a resource in predicting these people's ability
