PURPOSE: There is a recognized need for a reliable assessment instrument for apraxia of speech (AOS) diagnosis for post stroke patients. In 2014, Strand and colleagues reported high to excellent intra- and interjudge reliability of the Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale (ASRS) in neurodegenerative speech and language disorders. Excellent interjudge reliability of the ASRS total score has also recently been reported in another study of individuals with chronic AOS after stroke, where the ratings were carried out by two experienced researchers not involved in the development of the instrument. Purpose The aim of this study was to examine whether acoustic dysarthria characteristics align with overall motor profile in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Potential speech differences between tremor-dominant and non-tremor-dominant subtypes are theoretically motivated but empirically inconclusive. Method Twenty-seven individuals with dysarthria from PD provided a contextual speech sample. Participants were grouped into non-tremor-dominant (n = 12) and tremor-dominant (n = 15) motor subtypes according to the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale. Dependent speech variables include

Purpose Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), a motor-based speech disorder, has been well studied in English contexts. However, there is a limited understanding of the applicability of its features to other languages. Thus, this study sought to determine the applicability of the features identified in the English CAS literature to Cantonese CAS. Method A two-round modified Delphi survey of experts was used to identify the clinical features of CAS in Cantonese speakers. Ten Cantonese-speaking qualified speech therapists were recruited as experts. In Round 1, the experts were asked an open-ended q

PURPOSE: While an emerging body of research has demonstrated that late talkers (LTs) show continued subclinical deficits in language abilities, less is known about their development of speech production skills. The current study investigated speech production abilities among 3-year-old children with a history of late talking (hLTs) or typical talking (hTTs) using three measures of speech production skills.
METHOD: We assessed speech production skills in a sample of 3-year-old children who were previously identified as LTs or typical talkers (44 hTTs, 31 hLTs) using a norm-referenced assessmen

INTRODUCTION: Auditory-perceptual evaluations of dysphonia, though essential for comprehensive voice evaluation, are subject to listener bias. Knowledge of an underlying voice disorder can influence auditory-perceptual ratings. Accented speech results in increased listener effort and delays in word identification. Yet, little is known about the impact of foreign language accents on auditory-perceptual ratings for dysphonic speakers. The purpose of this work was to determine the impact of a foreign language accent on experts' auditory-perceptual ratings of dysphonic speakers.
METHODS: Twelve v

OBJECTIVE: Although speaking rate is central for many speech disorders, no consensus exists regarding the measurement of this feature. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlations between perceptual listener evaluations and various measures of speaking rate. Furthermore, the study investigated the relationship between speaking rate and articulation rate and how pauses in speech affect the perceived tempo.
METHOD: Nine healthy females were selected to produce stimuli representing three habitual speech tempi during semi-spontaneous speech: slow (n = 3), neutral (n = 3) and fast (n

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effects of two specific treatment protocols for acquired apraxia of speech (AOS): Sound Production Treatment (SPT) and Metrical Pacing Therapy (MPT), and to examine changes in communicative participation.
METHOD: Four speakers with chronic AOS and aphasia were each administered SPT and MPT in a replicated crossover design (ABACA/ACABA) with nonconcurrent multiple baselines across participants and behaviors. Treatment outcomes were compared with respect to whole word correctness (WWC) for treated and untreated multisyllabic word tar

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the efficacy of expansion points (EXP) intervention with a modified criterion for preschool children with speech sound disorders (SSD). Three preschool-aged children were enrolled in a single-subject multiple baseline intervention study. Intervention took place over 16 sessions. Pre- and post-intervention data are provided. Three outcome measures (generalization to probe words and gains in percent consonants correct, PCC, in words and in conversation) were evaluated to measure the effectiveness of the EXP intervention. All three of the particip

Purpose Interventions for speech disorders aim to produce changes that are not only acoustically measurable or perceptible to trained professionals but are also apparent to naive listeners. Due to challenges associated with obtaining ratings from suitably large listener samples, however, few studies currently evaluate speech interventions by this criterion. Online crowdsourcing technologies could enhance the measurement of intervention effects by making it easier to obtain real-world listeners' ratings. Method Stimuli, drawn from a published study by Sapir et al. ("Effects of intensive voice t

This paper considers the topic of vocal tract acoustics from the three perspectives: (a) the acoustic theory of speech production; (b) contemporary laboratory methods for acoustic analysis, and (c) measurement of the acoustic signal of speech. Linear source-filter theory is the standard acoustic theory of speech production and is the foundation for remarkable advances in the analysis and synthesis of speech. Digital signal processing, the dominant laboratory method for speech analysis, enables the acquisition and recording of the acoustic speech signal but also implements quantitative algorith

PURPOSE: A critical component to the development of any type of intervention to improve speech production in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complete understanding of the speech impairments present at each stage of the disease and how these impairments change with disease progression. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine the impact of disease on speech production and speech breathing during an extemporaneous speech task in individuals with PD over the course of approximately 3.5 years.
METHOD: Eight individuals with PD and eight age- and sex-matched control par

PURPOSE: Cluttering is a fluency disorder that has been noted clinically in individuals with fragile X syndrome (FXS). Yet, cluttering has not been systematically characterized in this population, hindering identification and intervention efforts. This study examined the rates of cluttering in male young adults with FXS using expert clinical opinion, the alignment between expert clinical opinion and objectively quantified features of cluttering from language transcripts, and the association between cluttering and aspects of the FXS phenotype.
METHOD: Thirty-six men with FXS (aged 18-26 years;

Purpose This exploratory study sought to identify acoustic variables explaining rate-related variation in intelligibility for speakers with dysarthria secondary to multiple sclerosis. Method Seven speakers with dysarthria due to multiple sclerosis produced the same set of Harvard sentences at habitual and slow rates. Speakers were selected from a larger corpus on the basis of rate-related intelligibility characteristics. Four speakers demonstrated improved intelligibility and three speakers demonstrated reduced intelligibility when rate was slowed. A speech analysis resynthesis paradigm termed

Dysarthria is a disorder that affects an individual's speech intelligibility due to the paralysis of muscles and organs involved in the articulation process. As the condition is often associated with physically debilitating disabilities, not only do such individuals face communication problems, but also interactions with digital devices can become a burden. For these individuals, automatic speech recognition (ASR) technologies can make a significant difference in their lives as computing and portable digital devices can become an interaction medium, enabling them to communicate with others and

BACKGROUND: Imprecise articulation has a negative impact on speech intelligibility. Therefore, treatment of articulation is clinically relevant in patients with dysarthria. In order to be effective and according to the principles of motor learning, articulation therapy needs to be intensive, well organized, with adequate feedback and requires frequent practice.
AIMS: The aims of this pilot study are (1) to evaluate the feasibility of a virtual articulation therapy (VAT) to guide patients with dysarthria through a boost articulation therapy (BArT) program; (2) to evaluate the acoustic models'

Purpose Despite having distinct etiologies, acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) and childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) share the same central diagnostic challenge (i.e., isolating markers specific to an impairment in speech motor planning/programming). The purpose of this review was to evaluate and compare the state of the evidence on approaches to differential diagnosis for AOS and CAS and to identify gaps in each literature that could provide directions for future research aimed to improve clinical diagnosis of these disorders. Method We conducted a scoping review of literature published between

Beckman and colleagues claimed in 2011 that Swedish has an overspecified phonological contrast between prevoiced and voiceless aspirated stops. Yet, Swedish is the only language for which this pattern has been reported. The current study describes a similar phonological pattern in the vernacular Arabic dialect of Qatar. Acoustic measurements of main (voice onset time, VOT) and secondary (fundamental frequency, first formant) cues to voicing are based on production data of 8 native speakers of Qatari Arabic, who pronounced 1,380 voiced and voiceless word-initial stops in the slow and fast rate

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a Belgian Dutch outcome tool for the perceptual evaluation of speech in patients with cleft palate.
SETTING: Cleft palate team in a tertiary university hospital.
METHODS: The tool was based on the Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech-Augmented (John et al., 2006; Sell et al., 2009), with adaptations to some of the speech variables and the structured listening protocol. Following a preliminary listening experiment in phase 1, the tool was optimized. In the second phase, a listening experiment with 4 experienced listeners was set up to assess face validity, inter-
