Toxic shock syndrome following septoplasty using plastic septal splints.

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is an acute multisystem disease that has been recognized to occur in a variety of clinical settings. Postoperative TSS has been described following nasal surgery associated with the use of postoperative nasal packing. We report a case of classic TSS following septoplasty where intranasal splints without nasal packing were used. Recommendations for prevention of TSS associated with nasal surgery are presented.

Splint versus no splint after ankle fracture fixation; Results from the multi-centre post-operative ankle splint trial (PAST).

BACKGROUND: There is considerable variation in the rehabilitation of ankle fractures. Ankle fractures treated surgically are often immobilized or splinted in the early post-operative period, despite the lack of robust evidence supporting this intervention. Thus, this randomized controlled trial aims to investigate the anecdote that splinting reduces pain and oedema. METHODS: A prospective multi-centre randomized controlled trial was performed in three trauma centres. Eligible patients were over 18 years of age that have sustained an isolated unilateral ankle fracture requiring surgical interv

Use of the Thomas splint and cast combination, walker splint, and spica bandage with an over the shoulder splint for the treatment of fractures of the upper limbs in cattle.

Many tibial and radial-ulnar fractures in cattle and small ruminants may be treated successfully with Thomas splint and cast combinations (TSCC). The Walker splint has been specifically designed for treating tibial fractures and stifle injuries in cattle. It usually fits better in rear limbs of cattle than the TSCC and thus can provide more stability. Spica bandages combined with lateral splints placed over the dorsum of the affected limb and down the contralateral shoulder may be used for partial immobilization of humeral fractures in calves and small ruminants when surgical repair is not an o

Efficiency of pivot splints as jaw exercise apparatus in combination with stabilization splints in anterior disc displacement without reduction: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficiency of pivot splints in jaw exercises, in combination with stabilization splints, in cases of anterior disc displacement without reduction of temporomandibular joint. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-three patients who referred to the prosthodontics clinic in 1995-1997 were included in the study, where anterior disc displacement without reduction of temporomandibular joint was diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging and clinical examination. Pivot splints were used for jaw exercises for five minutes long; five times/day and stabilization splints were used at all o

[The therapy of masticatory muscle pain with oral splints].

Myofascial masticatory muscle pain is the second most frequent pain-related complaint in the orofacial region. Like unspecific musculoskeletal pain in other body segments, masticatory muscle pain is characterised by a multifactorial aetiology. The aim of this article is to document the current knowledge about the therapy with oral splints. It is shown that in both the short and long term, oral appliances can achieve sufficient pain relief in the majority of patients. In chronic myofascial jaw pain associated with psychosocial impairment in patients, effectiveness of splint therapy is limited,

Professional musicians with craniomandibular dysfunctions treated with oral splints.

Craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) symptoms occur frequently in violin/viola and wind players and can be associated with pain in the neck, shoulders and arm. In the current study, the effect of oral splint treatment of CMD on reducing pain and symptoms especially in these areas was investigated. Thirty (30) musicians undergoing CMD treatment with oral splints participated in this study. They completed a questionnaire that addressed CMD symptoms, localization of pain, and subjective changes in symptoms. Pain in the shoulder and/or upper extremity was the most frequent symptom reported by 83% of

Nasal ciliary beat after insertion of septo-valvular splints.

OBJECTIVE: At present, endonasal paraseptal splints are devices frequently employed in rhinosurgery. We evaluated the local tolerance of a newly shaped device, the Guastella/Mantovani splint (G/M-SVS), with respect to the physiological mechanism of mucociliary clearance. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: The study involved 20 patients who underwent septoplasty and/or turbinoplasty or other nasal surgical procedures. A sample of ciliated cells was obtained by nasal brushing and was examined ex vivo to determine the ciliary beat frequency (CBF) and morphology, before and 15 days after surgery. RESULTS

The provision of occlusal splints in primary dental care.

UNLABELLED: Occlusal splints (Michigan splints, night/bite guards or bite-raising appliances) can be an effective, inexpensive and reversible treatment for a wide range of dental problems. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyse retrospectively the provision of occlusal splint ('Michigan' type) in general dental practice, following a prescription by a restorative dental consultant. METHOD: One hundred patients were recruited from consultant clinics in a department of conservative dentistry during 1995 and 1996. All patients were prescribed a maxillary, full-coverage, heat-cured, acry

[Treatment of hip dislocations and subluxations by Petit's splints].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The management of DDH in infants less than one year old is not yet definite. Many ambulant therapeutic methods are described and Pavlik's harness is widely employed. The use of Petit's splints is less well known and we report our experience with 169 cases. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Between 1973 and 1991, Petit's splints were used in 112 cases, following abduction cushions in 55 cases and after Pavlik's harness in 2 cases. 103 hips were dislocated but reducible. This permitted progressive abduction of the hips in order to obtain the reduction of the dislocation and to ensure s

[Lesions of zone II flexor tendons: splints and rehabilitation].

Rehabilitation of the hand after flexor tendon injuries in zone 2 is a challenge for both surgeons and therapists. Prevention of adherences is based on early controlled motion programs. Two different and therefore often complementary protocols are presented: 1. Kleinert: an active extension--passive flexion method; 2. Duran: a controlled passive method, as well as the splints required at this early stage of reeducation. The angles of flexion for the wrist and the metacarpal joints are discussed. When the splint is removed, active exercises and activities are proposed according to the interval

An Integrated Silicone Splint and Nostril Retainer for Postoperative Rhinoplasty Care: The Tezel Splinting Technique.

Rhinoplasty procedures involving septal reconstruction and lower nasal third deformities may require simultaneous support of the septum, external nasal valve, and nostril contour during the early postoperative period. However, concurrent use of conventional intranasal silicone splints and nostril retainers may be limited by the available intranasal space. This study describes the Tezel Splinting Technique, a technical modification that integrates a commercially available nostril retainer with an intranasal silicone splint to provide simultaneous postoperative support. A retrospective consecuti

Treatment of tendinous mallet fingers using a Stack splint versus a dorsal glued splint.

The goal of this study was to compare the results of a Stack splint compared to a dorsal glued splint in the treatment of tendinous mallet fingers. Our series included 100 patients, aged 47 years in average, among which 40 are women, with a 9-week follow-up. The first 50 patients (group I) were treated with a dorsal glued splint, and the 50 following patients (group II) were treated with a Stack splint. The average lack of active extension of the distal phalanx was 3.1° in group I and 1.74° in group II. The average pain was rated 0.22/10 in group I and 0.26/10 in group II. There were seven cas
