Which sports have a higher risk of maxillofacial injuries?

OBJECTIVES: Sports etiology is one of the most common causes of maxillofacial injuries. This work aimed to provide an up-to-date review of sports-related maxillofacial injuries. METHODS: An updated review was conducted on Pubmed and Google Scholar. No publication year and language restrictions were applied. Two different search strategies were performed, the first addressed which sports, generally associated with maxillofacial injuries, and the second search was conducted to determine the frequency of maxillofacial injuries associated with each sport individually. RESULTS: The first search r

Hypermobility and sports injuries in junior netball players.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of hypermobility in young female netball players and to determine the relation between hypermobility, previous injuries sustained in netball or other sports, and the use of protective equipment. METHODS: Under 16 year old female netball players from a local suburban netball association were assessed for joint hypermobility using the validated Beighton score (0-9, with higher scores indicating increasing hypermobility). Player profiles and details of sporting injuries, both netball and non-netball, and the use of protective equipment were gathered by means

Sideline Medical Bag Preparation for Sports Medicine Physicians.

Sideline medical care is an integral part of a sports medicine physician's responsibilities. While traveling with a sports team, the practice environment is much different than a standard clinic, training room, or emergency department. Planning and consideration are necessary to ensure that the correct supplies are available. This article addresses pre-event planning, packing, and travel requirements for a sports medicine physician's medical bag to ensure that the physician will be able to address common medical concerns.

[Typical injuries in snowboarding. Possible prevention strategies].

Due to the specific position on a snowboard, crashes often result in snowboard-specific injuries. As snowboarding nowadays represents a mass sport, treatment of injured snowboarders is becoming common clinical practice. Optimal treatment makes knowledge about snowboard-specific injuries and their underlying mechanisms mandatory. The upper extremities are most frequently affected, with the most frequent injury being the distal radius fracture. Because especially beginners are more often injured, prevention strategies seem to be promising. It was demonstrated that wrist-protection guards are abl

The importance of family support to engage and retain girls in male dominated action sports. A qualitative study of young people's perspectives.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Social support is positively correlated with physical activity (PA), especially amongst girls, but is underexplored in male-dominated action sports (e.g., mountain biking, skateboarding and surfing). This study explored family level social support needs and experiences of girls and boys in three action sports. METHOD: Aspiring, current or former Australian adolescent (12-18 years; girls n = 25; boys n = 17) mountain bikers, skateboarders and/or surfers were individually interviewed (telephone/Skype) in 2018/2020. A socio-ecological framework guided the semi-structured intervi

Aetiology and incidence of facial fractures sustained during sports: a prospective study of 140 patients.

A prospective study was carried out involving patients presenting with facial fractures sustained during sports. One hundred and forty patients were admitted to the Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital of Paris between March 1998 and March 2000, accounting for 13.3% of all patients with facial bone fractures. The ratio of males to females was 7.2:1 and the mean age was 28.5 years. The majority of accidents occurred during soccer (25.0%), followed by rugby (15.0%), and as a consequence of collisions between players (50.7%). The majority of the injuries involved the mandible (34.4%), the zygoma

The "burner": a common nerve injury in contact sports.

A "burner" is a common nerve injury resulting from trauma to the neck and shoulder, usually during sports participation. The injury is most often caused by traction or compression of the upper trunk of the brachial plexus or the fifth or sixth cervical nerve roots. Burners are typically transient, but they can cause prolonged weakness resulting in time loss from athletic participation. Furthermore, they often recur. Treatment consists of restoring range of motion, improving strength and providing protective equipment. Return to sports participation depends primarily on reestablishment of pain-

Surfing injuries.

Compared with other sports, surfing is relatively safe. Contact with the surfboard, rocks, coral, or sand causes most injuries. Environmental factors such as sun exposure and marine animal bites and stings are other causes of injury. Surfing with common sense, sunscreen, and proper equipment can help prevent injury.

Evaluating Polo Helmet Performance Across Different Impact Test Systems.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated head impact response between different helmet impact test systems by comparing the performance of ten polo helmets. METHODS: Helmets were evaluated using three test systems: a twin-wire guided drop tower, an oblique drop tower, and an impact pendulum. Impact tests were conducted at matched locations (front boss, side, rear boss) and speeds (3.46, 5.46 m/s). We employed a linear mixed model with helmet model as a random effect and calculated the least square mean differences between systems for peak linear acceleration (PLA), peak rotational acceleration (PRA), pe

Fungal infections and parasitic infestations in sports: expedient identification and treatment.

Common fungal infections include tinea corporis, capitis, cruris, versicolor, and pedis, as well as onychomycosis. Prevention of spread is important and involves frequent skin surveillance, avoidance of shared equipment, and regular equipment cleaning. The NCAA recommends treatment of tinea corporis and capitis infections and covering any exposed infection before return to play. Parasitic infestations occur because of the close physical contact of team members and athletes in contact sports. Both scabies and pediculosis should be treated before return to play, according to NCAA guidelines. Cut

[Cardiovascular preparticipation screening of competitive athletes].

Cardiovascular deaths during or following sport activities repeatedly raise the question about a practicable preparticipation screening for athletes to prevent such adverse events. In Germany and most European countries, well-equipped sports medicine centers evaluate the health of the Olympic athletes through regular checkups, which include a detailed medical history and thorough physical examination as well as an ECG at rest, a stress ECG, and an echocardiography. In professional sports, guidelines for this screening differ according to the federations, however, most of them intend to follow

Mixed Reality Golf Putting: A Comparative Analysis of Golf Putting Performance in Real, Virtual, and Augmented Virtuality Environments.

Although immersive technologies hold enormous potential for enhancing sports training, existing systems encounter notable limitations. While fully immersive virtual reality (VR) systems can address constraints of physical training setups such as limited space or equipment, full VR environments often lack rich, realistic, and multisensory feedback often required for effective sports training. To address this gap, this work investigates skill-based sport training, particularly, golf putting, across the reality-virtuality continuum. We implemented a mixed reality (MR) putting simulator that combi

Sports-related injuries in children. A study of their characteristics, frequency, and severity, with comparison to other types of accidental injuries.

In 1981 to 1982, within a 1 year period, details were recorded of children aged 0 to 15 years and 3 months, who were treated for accidental injury in a French health care district; 789 sports-related accidents were registered, representing 11% of all accidents. Sports areas were the leading sites of accident among children over age 12. Out-of-school sports accidents were more frequent among boys, but boys and girls had similar injury rates in school physical education. Compared to home, school, and road accidents, sports accidents had the highest rate of upper limb injury. The fracture rate wa

Diagnosis of Concussion on the Sidelines.

The forthcoming discussion will review the current state of the literature surrounding best practice guidelines for diagnosis of sports-related concussions on the sidelines. A sports-related concussive event is a complex process to define, which further increases its diagnostic process. At present there is no singular, gold-standard assessment tool available for the diagnosis of sports-related concussions on the sideline. Current best-practice recommendations suggest the utilization of a multifactorial examination process in a controlled environment. Sideline evaluations must include assessmen

Evaluation and Management of Sports-Related Lacerations of the Head and Neck.

Soft tissue injuries to the head and neck are a common occurrence in sports. These anatomical regions are somewhat predisposed because of the "athletic stance" that is utilized in many close-contact sports. Although appropriate use of protective equipment, including mouth guards, helmets, and face shields, has reduced the incidence and severity of these injuries, they still occur regularly. To provide appropriate medical care, one must possess adequate knowledge of the superficial and deep anatomical structures, fundamental knowledge and skill in regard to wound care, and awareness of potentia
