Measurement of rodent stereotyped behavior.

This unit presents a quantitative, observational method for the assessment of rodent stereotyped behavior which consists of motor responses that are repetitive, invariant, and seemingly without purpose or goal. The most classic behavioral pattern that is characteristic of stereotypy is that elicited by high doses of stimulants, such as cocaine and amphetamine, in rats, although it can also occur in response to other drugs or neurotoxic treatments affecting the basal ganglia. An observational time-sampling procedure is described in which animals are observed and rated by an experimenter, who is

Tactile defensiveness and stereotyped behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: This study explores the constructs of stereotyped behaviors (e.g., repetitive motor patterns, object manipulations, behavioral rigidities) and tactile defensiveness as relevant to occupational therapy theory and practice and attempts to test their purported relationships in children with developmental disabilities. METHOD: Twenty-eight children with developmental disabilities and autism were assessed on eight factors of stereotyped behavior via a questionnaire and by four measures of tactile defensiveness. The subjects' scores from the questionnaire were correlated with their scor

The psychology of perserverative and stereotyped behaviour.

Many forms of psychopathology in higher animals and humans include the production of maladaptive, repetitive behaviour. Behaviour which is both repetitive and excessive in amount can be described as stereotyped whereas behaviour which represents a restriction of behavioural possibilities without excessive production can be described as perseverative. Both types of repetition can result from pathology in the neural mechanisms which control either the production of motor output or the organisation of behaviour at a higher level. A number of forms of repetitive behaviour can be induced environmen

Women in treatment: beyond the stereotype.

A sample of 1776 adult women in treatment for chemical dependency was divided into two age groups: 30 or under and over 30. The two groups were compared for substance use histories and other psychosocial variables. Significant differences emerged in the use of illicit drugs, social use patterns and familial histories. Findings suggest that differences may be related to generational as well as age effects. The study highlights the heterogeneity of women in treatment and emphasizes the need to assess and respond to women's chemical dependency in the context of sociocultural transitions.

Clinical decisions on diagnosis and indication for treatment in stereotypical vs. non-stereotypical cases of eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of non-stereotypical Eating Disorders (EDs; e.g., characterized by normal weight, subjective binge eating) is much higher compared with stereotypical EDs (e.g., characterized by under- or overweight, objective binge eating), but treatment rates are much lower. Despite the similar subjective burden, individuals with non-stereotypical symptom presentation are often misperceived and do not receive adequate treatment. METHODS: Using case vignettes, we investigate not only whether non-stereotypical cases of ED are judged differently by a sample of N = 308 psychotherapists in

Cross-dimension-ambivalent in-group stereotypes: the moderating roles of social context of stereotype endorsement and in-group identification.

In this study, the authors examined in-group stereotypes that are cross-dimensionally ambivalent-simultaneously (a) positive in cognition-related content dimensions and negative in affect-related content dimensions or (b) negative in cognition-related content dimensions and positive in affect-related content dimensions-to establish whether endorsement of such in-group stereotypes depends on whether this process occurs in an intragroup versus intergroup context. Drawing on social identity theory, the authors predicted that (a) endorsement of cross-dimension-ambivalent in-group stereotypes would

A-B status and sex stereotyping among psychotherapists and patients. Toward a model for maximizing therapeutic potential.

Previous studies indicate that mental health professionals, when evaluating the mental health of males and females, sex role stereotype to the disparagement of females. Some feminists have further assumed that male therapists in particular discourage self-actualization of females, and have argued that female patients should be seen by female therapists only. This study examined the major hypothesis that among both male and female therapists and among both male and female patients, there may be identifiable kinds of therapists and patients who sex role stereotype more than others. A total of 24

Gender stereotypes in eating disorder recognition.

PURPOSE: Eating disorder (ED) awareness is low. We assessed if ED symptom recognition, perceived need for treatment, perceived distress, perceived acceptability, and perceived prevalence differed depending on the gender of the individual with the ED. METHODS: 276 community participants were randomly assigned to one of three gender conditions (female, male, and non-binary), read three vignettes describing three different individuals with ED symptoms [anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED)], and then answered a series of questions related to participants ED

Weight stereotypes in eating disorder recognition.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated weight stereotypes in the recognition and referral of eating disorders (EDs) by assessing if recognition, health care referral, perceived acceptability, perceived distress, and perceived prevalence of an ED differ depending on the weight of the subject in the vignette. METHOD: Community participants (N = 180, age = 19-74) read three different vignettes describing three females with different EDs [anorexia nervosa/atypical anorexia nervosa (AN/AAN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED)] and were randomized to three different experimental conditions conce

Not the Stereotypical Wilson Disease: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Wilson disease (WD), a potentially treatable genetic disorder with perturbations in copper metabolism, presents with hepatic and neuropsychiatric manifestations. Both hyper and hypokinetic movements predominate the latter spectrum. Motor stereotypies, however, are exceedingly rare. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 12-year-old girl, with progressive behavioural alterations and cognitive impairment, with motor stereotypies involving the upper limbs, as the dominant movement semiology. She was diagnosed as WD with evidence of striatal involvement on brain imaging. Her motor sympto

Stereotyped movement disorder in ICD-11.

According to current proposals for ICD-11, stereotyped movement disorder will be classified in the grouping of neurodevelopmental disorders, with a qualifier to indicate whether self-injury is present, similar to the classification of stereotypic movement disorder in DSM-5. At the same time, the WHO ICD-11 Working Group on the Classification of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders has proposed a grouping of body-focused repetitive behavior disorders within the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRD) cluster to include trichotillomania and skin-picking disorder. DSM-5 has taken

The N400 as an index of racial stereotype accessibility.

The current research examined the viability of the N400, an event-related potential (ERP) related to the detection of semantic incongruity, as an index of both stereotype accessibility and interracial prejudice. Participants' EEG was recorded while they completed a sequential priming task, in which negative or positive, stereotypically black (African American) or white (Caucasian American) traits followed the presentation of either a black or white face acting as a prime. ERP examination focused on the N400, but additionally examined N100 and P200 reactivity. Replicating and extending previous

Automated detection of stereotypical motor movements.

To overcome problems with traditional methods for measuring stereotypical motor movements in persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), we evaluated the use of wireless three-axis accelerometers and pattern recognition algorithms to automatically detect body rocking and hand flapping in children with ASD. Findings revealed that, on average, pattern recognition algorithms correctly identified approximately 90% of stereotypical motor movements repeatedly observed in both laboratory and classroom settings. Precise and efficient recording of stereotypical motor movements could enable researcher

Stereotype threat and female communication styles.

A large body of research has documented the performance-debilitating effects of stereotype threat for individuals, but there is a paucity of research exploring interpersonal consequences of stereotype threat. Two experiments tested the hypothesis that stereotype threat would change the style in which women communicate. Results indicate that women who experience stereotype threat regarding leadership abilities react against the stereotype by adopting a more masculine communication style. Study 2 provides evidence that self-affirmation eliminates this effect of stereotype threat on women's commu

[Avoiding the stereotypes of the culturalist approach in healthcare].

Healthcare institutions often turn to training organisations to train healthcare workers in an intercultural healthcare approach. The culturalist approach, usually expected from such training, is not always the most suitable. Working on differences provides a better understanding of the representations of patients and helps to avoid prejudices.

Stereotypic behavior in wild marine carnivores?

Stereotypic behavior is observed in many species within zoological institutions. Attempts to reduce such behavior typically involve some form of environmental enrichment that provides opportunities for species appropriate behavior or some degree of control within the environment. However, environmental enrichment has never been completely successful in eliminating stereotypic behavior for an entire group of animals within a zoological facility. In the wild, stereotypic behavior is rarely observed. Documenting the occurrence of stereotypic behavior in the wild, and circumstances in which it occ

Fluoxetine decreases stereotypic behavior in primates.

BACKGROUND: Primates reared in captivity may display stereotypic behaviors. These behaviors are arguably reminiscent of human obsessive-compulsive or posttraumatic symptoms, which respond to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Captive primates with marked stereotypic behaviors were entered into a randomized controlled study of the SSRI, fluoxetine. METHODS: A sample of 10 vervet monkeys with behaviors such as marked saluting, somersaulting, weaving, or head tossing was selected. Subjects were randomized to receive fluoxetine 1 mg/kg for 6 weeks (n=5) or no treatment (n=5). A rate

Stereotyped movements in a group of autistic children.

The authors studied the stereotyped movements presented by a group of 20 autistic children, evaluating the patient observation protocols according to a psychodynamic model of autism. The stereotyped movements were analysed considering ten different parameters: type, site, morphology, frequency, association, complexity, active sensory channel, trigger event, affect during stereotyped movement, and function. The results indicate that each autistic child possesses highly idiosyncratic "stereotypical behavioural equipment", which includes behaviours ranging from simple, reflex-like actions, to muc
