Lyme disease is a growing public health threat driven by interplay of climatic, ecological and social factors. This review adopts an eco-syndemic framework, viewing Lyme disease emergence as the confluence of multiple synergistic drivers rather than a single- cause phenomenon. We synthesize evidence that climate conditions, ecological circumstances and human behavioural patterns inter- sect to amplify Lyme disease risk. By integrating these seemingly separate domains, our review highlights novel insights; for exam- ple, habitat fragmentation and predator loss may magnify the effects of a warmi

The prevalence of HIV among transgender women (TGW) in India is disproportionately high, estimated at 4% to 8% in comparison with the national average of 0.2%. Despite free antiretroviral therapy (ART) provided by the government, TGW encounter multilevel barriers-including stigma, poverty, and lack of gender-affirming care-that hinder HIV care access and retention. Existing behavioral frameworks fail to address the compounded effects of systemic oppression on the health of TGW with HIV in India. We present a conceptual framework integrating syndemic theory and intersectionality to examine stru

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of global mortality. Understanding epidemiologic trends in the modifiable risk factors driving CVDs is essential in designing effective countermeasures.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to forecast geospatial trends of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, namely high systolic blood pressure (SBP), high fasting plasma glucose, high body mass index (BMI), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and tobacco use from 2025 to 2050.
METHODS: Historical data on disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and mortality from the GB

INTRODUCTION: While research with sexual minority men (SMM) has focused on disparities related to HIV, substance use and mental health, synergistic psychosocial pathways driving these epidemics remain underexplored. We used syndemic theory to assess how psychosocial factors sustain methamphetamine use and hinder recovery efforts for SMM living with HIV.
METHODS: A triangulation of network analyses and constructivist grounded theory approaches is utilised to elucidate pathways through which psychosocial factors influence methamphetamine use among this population. Survey data (N = 129) are used

Young men in South Africa experience several adverse socio-structural and psychosocial factors that may contribute HIV risk behaviors. This study applied a syndemic framework to explore whether these syndemic factors are interconnected and work in synergy to increase HIV risk behaviors. Five syndemic factors were assessed including: binge drinking, polydrug use, depressive symptoms, violence and food insecurity on two HIV risk behaviors: multiple sex partners and transactional sex. Participants were (N = 1233) young men aged 18-29 years from a township in Cape Town, South Africa. Bivariate log

The co-occurrence of HIV with mental health disorders, substance use, and tuberculosis continues to constitute significant global public health issues. Syndemic theory elucidates how these conditions interact synergistically to exacerbate health outcomes, reduce engagement in care, and hinder adherence to antiretroviral therapy. Structural competency offers a useful framework for conceptualizing and addressing the broader social, economic, and political determinants that influence health outcomes for people living with HIV as well as mental illness, substance use issues, and tuberculosis. We c

Objective: Advances in treatment have transformed HIV into a manageable chronic illness, yet people living with HIV (PLHIV) continue to face psychosocial challenges that reduce quality of life (QoL). These factors often co-occur and interact, creating syndemic effects that worsen outcomes. Method: This study examined relationships between HIV-related stigma, mental health difficulties, and social disconnection in predicting QoL. Participants were 213 PLHIV (184 male, 21 female, eight transgender/other/undisclosed) attending Albion, an urban tertiary HIV clinic in Sydney, Australia. They comple

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces a syndemic of infectious diseases, including monkeypox (mpox), cholera, measles, anthrax, and plague, worsening public health challenges and socioeconomic disparities. This review synthesizes and discusses epidemiological data and consequences of simultaneous outbreaks in the DRC between January 2023 and March 2024. The findings highlight a 6.7% fatality rate and 3319 confirmed cases of mpox, with significant outbreaks in Kinshasa and 22 other provinces. Anthrax occasionally surfaced among cattle-raising villages, measles affected fewer than five ch

BACKGROUND: The advent of COVID-19 increased attention to hand hygiene in prevention of disease transmission. To meet the increased demand for hand sanitizer during the pandemic, the US FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization allowing new manufacturers and importers to enter the market. Some of the newly introduced hand sanitizer products contained methanol in lieu of ethanol or isopropanol. We describe five patients with fatal methanol poisoning resulting from hand sanitizers improperly containing methanol.

This essay aims to present and discuss the theoretical framework for the COVID-19 syndemic. The first part presents the foundations and principles of syndemic theory. For the purposes of this essay, syndemic was defined as a process of synergic interaction between two or more diseases, in which the effects are mutually enhanced. We discussed the three principal typologies of syndemic interaction: mutually causal epidemics; epidemics interacting synergically; and serial causal epidemics. In the second part, COVID-19 is analyzed as a syndemic resulting from the interaction between various groups

The emergence of the Zika virus (ZIKV) mirrors its evolutionary nature and, thus, its ability to grow in diversity or complexity (i.e., related to genome, host response, environment changes, tropism, and pathogenicity), leading to it recently joining the circle of closed congenital pathogens. The causal relation of ZIKV to microcephaly is still a much-debated issue. The identification of outbreak foci being in certain endemic urban areas characterized by a high-density population emphasizes that mixed infections might spearhead the recent appearance of a wide range of diseases that were initia

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, have surpassed 5 million cases globally. Current models suggest that low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) will have a similar incidence but substantially lower mortality rate than high-income countries. However, malaria and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are prevalent in LMICs, and coinfections are likely. Both malaria and parasitic NTDs can alter immunologic responses to other infectious agents. Malaria can induce a cytokine storm and pro-coagulant state similar to that seen in severe COVID-19. Consequently, coinfections with malaria parasi

PURPOSE: The burden of syndemics-which are clusters of overlapping risk factors that adversely impact health-has been previously evaluated among high-risk individuals, yet little is known regarding syndemics within the relationship context.
METHODS: We evaluated concordant and discordant syndemic profiles among 296 pregnant couples and their actor-partner effects longitudinally from pregnancy to 1-year postpartum.
RESULTS: Syndemic score and severity were correlated across all time points for men and women. There was a significant difference in syndemic score (βMen-Women = .2736, p = <.0001)

INTRODUCTION: Transgender populations have been underrepresented in HIV epidemiologic studies and consequently in HIV prevention, care, and treatment programs. Since 2012, there has been a dramatic increase in research focused on transgender people. Studies highlight the burden of HIV and risk determinants, including intersecting stigmas, as drivers of syndemics among transgender populations. This review synthesizes the most recent global epidemiology of HIV infection and describes current gaps in research and interventions to inform prioritization of HIV research for transgender populations.

Background/Objectives: Viral respiratory tract infections (VRTIs) in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) are characterized by a severity gap rather than an infection gap. This review synthesizes evidence from the 2023-2026 respiratory seasons to provide a post-pandemic framework for managing the synergistic metabolic and viral threats in this population. Materials and Methods: A scoping review of literature from PubMed, Scopus, and Embase (2023-2026) was conducted, focusing on clinical outcomes and mechanistic interactions between DM and emerging respiratory pathogens. Results: Recent data id

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa faces a double burden of disease due to the continued high prevalence of infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis, and a concurrent increase in non-communicable diseases. The co-occurrence and clustering of multiple diseases can cause a syndemic, synergistically interacting epidemics, driven by context.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study investigated potential syndemics in Eswatini, by determining geospatial disease concentration and estimating interaction between four diseases and the impact of context on these interactions. Using data from the WHOPEN@

Syndemic theory posits that "syndemic conditions" (e.g., alcohol misuse, polydrug use, suicidality) co-occur among sexual minority men and influence HIV-risk behavior, namely HIV acquisition and transmission risk. To examine how four syndemic conditions cluster among sexual minority men and contribute to HIV-risk behavior, we conducted latent class analysis (LCA) to: (1) classify sexual minority men (n = 937) into subgroups based on their probability of experiencing each syndemic condition; (2) examine the demographic (e.g., race/ethnicity) and social status (e.g., level of socioeconomic distr
