The epidemiology of osteochondrosis in an insured Swedish dog population.

Osteochondrosis (OC) is a focal disturbance of endochondral ossification due to a failure of blood supply to the epiphyseal growth cartilage. In dogs, OC most commonly affects the shoulder joint, followed by the elbow, tarsal, and stifle joints. The condition is associated with clinical signs such as lameness and pain and the prognosis varies depending on the affected joint. Most epidemiologic studies of OC in dogs were performed over 20 years ago, and updated estimates of disease incidence are lacking. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to provide population-based estimates of the i

Biomechanical effects of lateral ankle ligament injury and repair on the midfoot and hindfoot joints.

BACKGROUND: The foot's tarsal bones primarily consist of four joints: the subtalar joint, talonavicular joint, calcaneocuboid joint, and naviculocuboid joint. These tarsal joints are associated with each other and exhibit complex kinematic features. The kinematic characteristics of these tarsal bones following injury and the repair of the lateral ankle ligaments throughout the normal gait cycle are still not fully understood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of lateral ankle ligament injury on the four midfoot and hindfoot joints using specimen models of d

Computed tomographic features of lesions detected in horses with tarsal lameness.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Tarsal pain is a common cause of hindlimb lameness in horses. Diagnosis can usually be made with radiography and ultrasonography; however, in some cases, these techniques are inconclusive and additional imaging is necessary. No studies describing computed tomography (CT) features of different tarsal lesions in horses with tarsal lameness are reported. OBJECTIVES: Our aims were as follows: 1) to characterise CT abnormalities in horses with tarsal lameness; 2) to compare CT findings with those from other imaging techniques; and 3) to assess whether CT can help to d

One-Bone Tarsus: A Case Report.

Tarsal coalition is a condition characterized by abnormal connections between ≥2 tarsi. Although tarsal coalition is not rare, tarsal coalitions involving >2 tarsi are very unusual. In this report, we describe a case of multiple tarsal coalitions in a 24-year-old male who experienced progressively worsening pain for 3 to 4 months before presenting for care. This case was unique in that all the tarsal and tarsometatarsal bones in the foot were fused and formed 1 integrated tarsal. All of the metatarsals were fused as well, and the patient had no joints or ranges of motion in the hindfoot or mid

Spontaneous Osteonecrosis of the Tarsal Navicular: A Report of Two Cases.

Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the tarsal navicular, called the Mueller-Weiss syndrome, is an uncommon disease. Patients who are resistant to conservative treatment require operative treatment. However, there is no established operative treatment. Two cases of spontaneous osteonecrosis of the tarsal navicular with double (talonavicular and naviculocuneiform joints) arthrodeses with different locking plates are presented. Removal of necrotic areas from the tarsal navicular and replacement with autologous bone graft procured from the iliac crest followed by arthrodesis using a locking plate were p

Pathological kinematic patterns of the tarsal complex in stage II adult-acquired flatfoot deformity.

The in vivo kinematic characteristics of the tarsal joints during gait stance phase were still unclear in adult-acquired foot deformity (AAFD). This study included seven healthy subjects (14 feet) and 12 stage II AAFD patients (14 feet). The 3D models of tarsal bones were reconstructed based on CT scan. Each subject took standard gait on the single fluoroscopy system. Continuous lateral fluoroscopic images were collected. The key postures during the stance phase were selected. The 2D-3D registration technique was applied to explore the spatial motions of the tarsal joints in 6 degrees of freed

Flattening of the rheumatoid foot in tarsal arthritis on X-ray.

222 consecutive and unselected patients suffering form classical or definite rheumatoid arthritis wee studied. 397 of their feet were examined. Talonavicular arthritis was the commonest finding (31.5% of all patients), followed by sub-talar (23.3%), cuneo-navicular (20.4%) cuneo-metatarsal (14.9%) and tibio-tarsal arthritis (12.6%). Rheumatoid disease of the tarsus becomes commoner as the disease progresses. The incidences of involvement of the talo-navicular and sub-talar joints show a similar pattern, with a leap of 25% between 5 years of duration of the disease and 10 years. The same is see

Evaluation of clinical and diagnostic imaging findings of bilateral superficial digital flexor tendon luxation in the tarsus of a gelding.

Superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) plays an important role in the locomotion of the horses with flexion of the limbs. In the hind limb, it passes over the calcaneal bone and attaches to medial and lateral surfaces of calcaneous by two bands of connective tissue; while, the medial band is weaker than the lateral one. Occasionally, severe trauma, over-extension or fracture of the calcaneous may cause rupture of the supportive bands leading to tendon luxation. An 11-year-old Thoroughbred jumping gelding with symptoms of lameness in both legs, after examination by an internal specialist vete

Endoscopic Resection of the Tarsal Tunnel Ganglion.

The tarsal tunnel ganglion is a cause of posterior tarsal tunnel syndrome. Open resection of the ganglion calls for release of the flexor retinaculum and dissection around the tibial neurovascular bundle. This can induce fibrosis around the tibial nerve. We report the technique of endoscopic resection of the tarsal tunnel ganglion. It is indicated for tarsal tunnel ganglia arising from the adjacent joints or tendon sheaths and compressing the tibial nerve from its deep side. It is contraindicated if there is other pathology of the tarsal tunnel that demands open surgery; if the ganglion compre

The medial safe zone for treating intraneural ganglion cysts in the tarsal tunnel: a technical note.

INTRODUCTION: Intraneural ganglion cysts in the tarsal tunnel are rare but are being increasingly reported. The cysts involve the tibial or plantar nerves and are most commonly derived from a neighboring (degenerative) joint, (i.e., the tibiotalar or subtalar) via an articular branch arising from the medial aspect of the nerve. We describe a safe zone for approaching these cysts in the tarsal tunnel that allows for identification of the joint connection without injury to important distal branches. METHODS: We present a case of an intraneural ganglion cyst within the tarsal tunnel in a patient

The role of PGE2 in the sensitization of mechanoreceptors in normal and inflamed ankle joints of the rat.

The role of PGE2 in the sensitization of high-threshold tarsal joint mechanoreceptors (putative nociceptors) has been investigated in 11 arthritic and 16 normal rats. Injections of a low dose of Freund's complete adjuvant at multiple sites into the tissues surrounding the ankle joint induced a chronic unilateral monoarthritis in the injected limb. Measurements of both spontaneous activity and responses of tarsal joint mechanoreceptors to repeated graded mechanical stimuli were made. All of the mechanoreceptors examined had afferent fibres with conduction velocities in the C- or A-delta range.

Peroneal spastic flatfoot syndrome.

Tarsal coalitions are not the sole cause of peroneal spastic flatfoot, and any irritative lesion in the peritalar area can induce protective contraction of any or all of the muscles bridging the peritalar joints. True muscular peroneal spasm has been shown to be present on a clinical basis in this entity where tarsal coalitions are not present. Neoplasm should be included in the differential diagnosis of the rigid flatfoot deformity.

The Topographic Map of the Midfoot: Implication for Improving Safety of Dorsal Approach of Midfoot Surgeries.

PURPOSE: The surgical approach for midfoot injuries classically requires dual dorsal incision and identification of the neurovascular structures that are susceptible to injury during the surgery. The aim of this study was to map the topographic anatomy of the dorsum of the foot along with tarsal joints for the dorsal approach of midfoot surgery that would facilitate the surgery and minimize the risk of neurovascular injuries for surgeons who specially focus on foot and ankle injuries. METHODS: The dorsum of the foot was evaluated in 12 feet injected with latex containing a red colorant to vis

Tarsal coalition in adults.

Adult tarsal coalition consists in abnormal union of two or more tarsal bones. Reported incidence ranges between 1 and 13%. It is generally a congenital condition, due to dominant autosomal chromosome disorder, but with some acquired forms following trauma or inflammatory pathology. Poorly specific clinical signs and the difficulty of screening on conventional X-ray may lead to diagnostic failure. The present review of tarsal coalition addresses the following questions: how to define tarsal coalition? How to diagnose it? How to treat it? And what results can be expected? There are 3 types of t
