Exploring Factors Influencing Nursing Task Prioritization for Supportive Information System Design: Qualitative Study With Thematic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are required to perform multiple tasks concurrently, which leads to multitasking situations, and they have to continuously determine which tasks should be prioritized. This is particularly challenging for novice nurses. Although IT-based systems supporting prioritization have begun to emerge, research on the types of information required when prioritization is processed computationally is scant. Despite the clear need for a supportive information system to assist nursing task prioritization, such systems are not yet sufficiently developed. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to exp

Current Practices for Mental Fatigue Quantification and Induction in Movement Science: Introducing the SPeCIFY Guidelines.

Mental fatigue (MF) is a complex phenomenon with significant implications for human performance, for which there are numerous studies investigating the effects of MF. Nevertheless, there is considerable variability in the approaches used to induce and quantify MF, making it hard to compare findings across studies and draw well-supported conclusions. This review addresses the methodological variability in the induction and quantification methods of MF in movement science in the following ways: on the one hand, by providing an overview of task design strategies to induce MF, emphasizing the impo

Antisaccade task performance in obsessive-compulsive disorder and its clinical correlates.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by abnormalities in the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuitry of the brain. Antisaccade eye movement tasks measure aspects of the voluntary control of behaviour that are sensitive to CSTC circuitry dysfunction. METHOD: In this study, we examined antisaccade eye movement parameters of OCD patients in comparison with healthy controls (HC). In addition, we also examined the relationship between the antisaccade eye movement parameters and the severity of OCD. Antisaccade performance among right handed OCD patients (N = 65

Differential effects and discriminative validity of motor and cognitive tasks varying in difficulty on cognitive-motor interference in persons with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-motor interference (CMI) has been well recognized in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS); however, there are limited data on effects of task difficulty. OBJECTIVE: Examine (1) the effects of motor and cognitive tasks varying in difficulty on the magnitude of CMI and (2) the discriminative validity of CMI between pwMS and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Nine cognitive-motor dual-task (DT) conditions (combinations of three cognitive and three walking tasks) were examined. Outcome measures were DT-performance and dual-task cost (DTC) of gait parameters and correct answe

Goal directed behavior and dyslexia.

Goal directed behavior is explained by two approaches: the first, which can be named as cybertetic (behavior is wieved as homeostatic and reflexive), and second, as cognitive approach, a learned response, (skills developed by whaching the behavior of another individual). The aim of the paper is to present a noninvasive method described as an interaction of human beings with environment, recording the electrical activity of the brain from the human scalp. Obtained results are in agreement of psychological theories that place at determined levels of age the acquisition of the capacities of abstr

A method for the classification of corrective activity in context dependent postural controlling tasks.

Difficulties in maintaining postural stability are not common among young healthy people. However, with increasing age problems start to emerge. Deficits in the postural control system may also originate from a working environment where noise and solvents are present. Some diseases, for instance Menière's disease, can cause instability in walking and standing. Regardless of the origin of the problem in the balance system, it has to be detected in a meaningful, easily interpretable way. When detected, a suitable rehabilitation method can be proposed. In this paper we present a method which extr

Preventable anesthesia mishaps: a study of human factors.

A modified critical-incident analysis technique was used in a retrospective examination of the characteristics of human error and equipment failure in anesthetic practice. The objective was to uncover patterns of frequently occurring incidents that are in need of careful prospective investigation. Forty-seven interviews were conducted with staff and resident anesthesiologists at one urban teaching institution, and descriptions of 359 preventable incidents were obtained. Twenty-three categories of details from these descriptions were subjected to computer-aided analysis for trends and patterns.

Occupational Physical Requirements for Astronauts.

INTRODUCTION: Through the Artemis program, space agencies and astronauts are preparing for extended durations in space and on planetary surfaces, expanding their occupational tasks. Although standardized laboratory tests are effective in assessing health and mitigating deconditioning, their reliability in forecasting occupational performance is uncertain. Consequently, a recent shift in exercise testing has emerged, shifting focus from health-oriented criteria to operational performance. This involves identifying the physical demands associated with components of an astronaut's tasks and deter

The effects of task-relevant suggestions on motivated cognitive control.

To deal with the only constant in life, change, we use a set of top-down processes called cognitive control. Cognitive control enables us to develop new stimulus-response associations appropriate for the task at hand instead of being rigidly bound to our existing repertoire of responses. Given the central role cognitive control has in our lives, it is not a surprise that different methods have been tested for improving it; however, few have shown generalizable, long-term effects. One approach, which has shown great promise in enhancing performance in different tasks requiring cognitive control

Can Microinstrument Motion Metrics of Distance, Speed, and Acceleration Indicate Surgical Task Complexity? An AI-Driven Study.

Objectifying the quality of microsurgical technique is both crucial and challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether microinstrument motion metricscan reflect the complexity of microsurgical tasks. The laboratory experiment involved 13 right-handed neurosurgeons tasked with using microsurgical scissors to cut a white thread at a spot marked by a purple dot under the microscope. Each participant completed the task under four consecutive conditions: with or without wrist stabilization on a support, both before and after muscle load. Using the promptable transformer model, we segmen

Neural Oscillations and Functional Significances for Prioritizing Dual-Task Walking in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Task prioritization involves allocating brain resources in a dual-task scenario, but the mechanistic details of how prioritization strategies affect dual-task walking performance for Parkinson's disease (PD) are little understood. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the performance benefits and corresponding neural signatures for people with PD during dual-task walking, using gait-prioritization (GP) and manual-prioritization (MP) strategies. METHODS: Participants (N = 34) were asked to hold two inter-locking rings while walking and to prioritize either taking big steps (GP strategy) or s

Robotic Platform for Horticulture: Assessment Methodology and Increasing the Level of Autonomy.

The relevance of the study is confirmed by the rapid development of automation in agriculture, in particular, horticulture; the lack of methodological developments to assess the effectiveness of the introduction of robotic technologies; and the need to expand the functionality of mobile robots. The purpose of the study was to increase the level of autonomy of a robotic platform for picking apple fruits based on a new method, develop a system of factors to determine the effectiveness of the introduction of robots in horticulture, and develop a control system using integrated processing of onboa

Face processing in police service: the relationship between laboratory-based assessment of face processing abilities and performance in a real-world identity matching task.

In the present study, we investigated whether police officers' performance in searching for unfamiliar faces in a video-based real-world task is predicted by laboratory-based face processing tests that are typically used to assess individual differences in face processing abilities. Specifically, perceptual performance in the field was operationalized via the identification of target individuals in self-made close-circuit television (CCTV) video tapes. Police officers' abilities in the laboratory were measured by the Cambridge Face Memory Test long form (CFMT+). We hypothesized that the CFMT+

Seeing from a short-term perspective: When and why daily abusive supervisor behavior yields functional and dysfunctional consequences.

Although destructive consequences for subordinates have featured prominently in the abusive supervision literature, scholars have insinuated that supervisory abuse may temporarily yield functional results. Drawing from research on motive attribution tendencies that underlie abusive supervision and the control perspective of repetitive thought, we develop and test a multilevel theory that delineates both functional and dysfunctional subordinate responses to daily abusive supervisor behavior. We posit that when subordinates generally attribute abusive supervision to performance promotion motives

Sustained attention to response task performance trajectories in Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sustained attention (SA) has been reported to be a unitary construct in youth with Down syndrome (DS), but additional analyses of how auditory and visual SA change over task presentation time are warranted. METHOD: The current study was a secondary data analysis employing multilevel modeling. Specifically, we compared auditory and visual sustained attention to response task (SART) performance trajectories within a group of 42 youth with DS aged 10 to 22 years. RESULTS: We found that auditory omission errors increased at a faster rate than visual omission errors over increasing SA

Functional assessment aided by motion laboratory studies.

The physician needs to integrate the results of the assessment of overall patterns of functional use (Table 1), static contractures, dynamic deformities of motor imbalance for multiple levels of involvement (shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand), and sensory deficiencies. This information is combined with a general assessment of the child's mentation, motivation, and generalized medical condition. Certain patients benefit most from surgical intervention in cerebral palsy. Patients with spastic deformities or flaccid control of specific movements can be helped significantly. In patients with flacci
