BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: If left untreated, cracked teeth can lead to tooth loss, of which the incidence is 70%. Dental preparation is an effective treatment, but it is difficult to meet the clinical requirements when traditionally prepared by dentists. Grinding-based tooth preparation robot (TPR) shows promise for clinical applications to assist dentists. However, current TPR has problems with chipping and crack extension when preparing real teeth.
METHODS: We propose a grinding parameter optimization strategy to solve this problem, specifically including preparation depth and direction. A

The restoration of teeth affected by molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is challenging. To this end, preformed stainless steel crowns (SSCs) are a good option; however, their conventional use involves the removal of tooth structure. In the Hall technique, the SSC is seated over the primary teeth without caries removal or tooth preparation, aiming to seal carious lesions. This case series reports the use of SSCs in a similar way to the Hall technique for 3 pediatric patients with MIH. The high-caries-risk patient in case 1 lost hypomineralized enamel and developed a carious lesion immediate

CONTEXT: Understanding tooth biomechanics is essential for creating effective and durable dental restorations. While intact teeth are inherently resilient, cavity preparation compromises structural integrity, increasing fracture risk.
AIMS: This study utilized finite element analysis (FEA), the dominant in silico method for biomechanical investigation, to evaluate how cavity size influences stress and strain distribution in a three-dimensional mandibular molar model derived from micro-computed tomography.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An FEA simulation was conducted on three tooth models (intact too

A paraformaldehyde preparation (Toxavit) was applied to an inflamed and symptomatic pulp of the mandibular right first molar (tooth #46), in a 30-year-old woman. Leakage from the product was responsible for marked necrosis of the gingiva and the alveolar cortical bone, which resulted in loss of the tooth.

The era of "extension for prevention" used restorative materials and cavity preparation designs in an attempt to arrest the caries process. In the new era of "prevention to eliminate extension," many of the old limitations are no longer applicable because of advances in research and technology. The advances in restorative materials and adhesive technology require the use of an adhesive design concept when considering restorative material selection, preparation designs, and adhesive protocol and placement procedures and techniques. This adhesive design concept has been instrumental in the parad

Dental restorations without tooth preparation are among today's more advanced treatment options. This article presents the case of a young man who was treated with a non-prep laminate veneer that provided 3.5 mm of incisal elongation. A Photoshop assessment and functional evaluation, as well as a wax-up and mock-up, were used during pre-prosthetic planning. A combination of pressable and feldspathic ceramics was used as a restorative material, which was applied to the tooth surface without any preparation of dental hard tissue. An ideal functional and esthetic restoration was achieved thanks t

The purpose of this study was to evaluate muscle activation and fatigue in the operator during tooth preparation and intraoral scanning by simulating these tasks in two types of dental unit chair systems (UCS). Six participants were recruited, and the above tasks were simulated. Electrodes were placed on the skin over five types of muscles (arm, neck, and shoulder muscles), and the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) was measured. Electromyography (EMG) was assessed during the simulation, and EMG values were normalized using MVC. The root mean square (RMS) EMG (%MVC) and muscle fatigue (%) wer

With the advancement in ceramic restorations bonded to tooth structure, the treatment has become a feasible and conservative option to restore teeth with alteration in shape when owing to high demand in esthetics, with or without minimum tooth preparation. This article describes a report of a 32-year-old woman who was dissatisfied with her smile. The patient reported that she still had deciduous teeth, and that the maxillary lateral incisors had been restored with direct resin composite to correct the teeth shape. After discussing the restorative possibilities, a decision was made to place all

Here, we present the multidisciplinary, patient-specific management of a patient with severe external root resorption and bone loss in a maxillary anterior tooth. The tooth was provisionally noninvasively restored with glass ionomer subgingival matrix in preparation for forced orthodontic extrusion, papillary preservation, and implant placement. This approach enables clinicians to control infection within and around the resorbed tooth and then to use it as an anchor for slow forced tooth eruption to correct bone and mucogingival deformities. Aesthetic and functional outcomes were clinically an

In order to evaluate the prognosis in tooth transplant procedure the literature on this subject was reviewed. The survival of the periodontal ligament is necessary to prevent ankylosis and root resorption. In order to obtain optimal clinical results, the following guidelines are proposed: preparation of the recipient site 2 weeks prior to graft placement, preservation of intact Pdl at time of extraction, rapid reimplantation of tooth in new socket, short term contention (2-3 weeks); endodontic therapy 8-10 weeks after tooth transplantation.

Visualization and pre-operative plan are critical to efficient and thorough case preparation. Congenitally missing teeth, coupled with improper tooth positioning, can compromise the aesthetic rehabilitation outcome. Utilizing pre-treatment digital photography as an outline for tooth reduction and laser tissue re-contouring may help to create a symmetric and pleasing smile, even under less ideal conditions.

In this paper the biomechanical response of a novel dental preparation technique, referred to as the Anatomic-Functional-Geometry treatment (AFG), is investigated through a 3D nonlinear finite-element modelling approach. A comparative investigation against a standard technique employed in dental clinical practice is carried out, by simulating typical experimental mechanical tests and physiological functional conditions. Failure mechanisms of treated tooth models are investigated through a progressive damage formulation implemented via a displacement-driven incremental approach. Computational r
