Mirror Neurons and Mirror-Touch Synesthesia.

Since mirror neurons were introduced to the neuroscientific community more than 20 years ago, they have become an elegant and intuitive account for different cognitive mechanisms (e.g., empathy, goal understanding) and conditions (e.g., autism spectrum disorders). Recently, mirror neurons were suggested to be the mechanism underlying a specific type of synesthesia. Mirror-touch synesthesia is a phenomenon in which individuals experience somatosensory sensations when seeing someone else being touched. Appealing as it is, careful delineation is required when applying this mechanism. Using the mi

Highly stretchable, transparent ionic touch panel.

Because human-computer interactions are increasingly important, touch panels may require stretchability and biocompatibility in order to allow integration with the human body. However, most touch panels have been developed based on stiff and brittle electrodes. We demonstrate an ionic touch panel based on a polyacrylamide hydrogel containing lithium chloride salts. The panel is soft and stretchable, so it can sustain a large deformation. The panel can freely transmit light information because the hydrogel is transparent, with 98% transmittance for visible light. A surface-capacitive touch syst

Randomized Trial of Chocolate Touch Compared With Lutonix Drug-Coated Balloon in Femoropopliteal Lesions (Chocolate Touch Study).

BACKGROUND: First-generation drug-coated balloons (DCBs) have significantly reduced the rate of restenosis compared with balloon angioplasty alone; however, high rates of bailout stenting and dissections persist. The Chocolate Touch DCB is a nitinol constrained balloon designed to reduce acute vessel trauma and inhibit neointima formation and restenosis. METHODS: Patients with claudication or ischemic rest pain (Rutherford class 2-4) and superficial femoral or popliteal disease (≥70% stenosis) were randomized 1:1 to Chocolate Touch or Lutonix DCB at 34 sites in the United States, Europe, and

Dissociable sources of erogeneity in social touch: Imagining and perceiving C-Tactile optimal touch in erogenous zones.

Previous research points to two major hypotheses regarding the mechanisms by which touch can be experienced as erotogenic. The first concerns the body part to which touch is applied (erogenous zones) and the second the modality of touch (sensual touch optimal in activating C Tactile afferents). In this study, we explored for the first time the relation between those two mechanisms in actual and imagined social touch. In a first experiment, we randomly assigned "Giver" and "Receiver" roles within 19 romantic couples (20 females, 18 males, age 32.34 ± 8.71SD years) and asked the "Giver" to apply

Use of Sound Touch Elastography and Sound Touch Quantification for the Noninvasive Evaluation of Portal Hypertension in a Rat Model.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we used the recently developed ultrasound elastography techniques sound touch elastography (STE) and sound touch quantification (STQ) to quantify portal hypertension (PHT) severity in a rat model of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 )-induced cirrhotic PHT. METHODS: In total, 60 rats were used. Various degrees of PHT were established. Liver and spleen stiffness were measured by STE (L-STE and S-STE, respectively) and STQ (L-STQ and S-STQ, respectively). We measured portal pressure (PP) after ultrasonographic examination. The performance of the STE and STQ parameters in the

Configuring the Professional Touch in Physical Examinations in Chinese Outpatient Clinical Interaction: Talk, Touch, Professional Vision, and Intersubjectivity.

Touch is a fundamental resource mobilized by clinicians in physical examinations in outpatient clinical consultations. However, few studies have been conducted to explore the sequential organization of touch in the interactional process of physical examinations where clinicians' touch is launched and responded to in Chinese medical settings. Based on a collection of video recordings of naturally occurring clinician-patient interaction in an orthopedic outpatient clinic in China, we observed four types of clinicians' touch in the physical examination framework: the guiding touch, the diagnostic

Touching a Nerve: Neuroimmune Interactions in Asthma.

Asthma is an inflammatory airway disease characterized by excessive bronchoconstriction and airway hyperresponsiveness. Airway nerves play a crucial role in regulating these processes. In asthma, interactions between inflammatory cells and nerves result in nerve dysfunction, which worsens airway function. This review discusses new insights regarding the role of airway nerves in healthy lungs and examines how communication between nerves and leukocytes, including eosinophils, mast cells, dendritic cells, and innate lymphoid cells, contributes to nerve dysfunction and the worsening of airway dis

'Do not touch' lesions of the skull base.

Imaging of the skull base presents many challenges due to its anatomical complexity, numerous normal variants and lack of familiarity to many radiologists. As the skull base is a region which is not amenable to physical examination and as lesions of the skull base are generally difficult to biopsy and even more difficult to operate on, the radiologist plays a major role in directing patient management via accurate image interpretation. Knowledge of the skull base should not be limited to neuroradiologists and head and neck radiologists, however, as the central skull base is routinely included

The perception of touch and the ventral somatosensory pathway.

In humans, touching the skin is known to activate, among others, the contralateral primary somatosensory cortex on the postcentral gyrus together with the bilateral parietal operculum (i.e. the anatomical site of the secondary somatosensory cortex). But which brain regions beyond the postcentral gyrus specifically contribute to the perception of touch remains speculative. In this study we collected structural magnetic resonance imaging scans and neurological examination reports of patients with brain injuries or stroke in the left or right hemisphere, but not in the postcentral gyrus as the en

Pancreatoduodenectomy using a no-touch isolation technique.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatoduodenectomy is the only effective treatment for cancers of the periampullary region. Because surgeons usually grasp tumors during pancreatoduodenectomy, this procedure may increase the risk of squeezing and shedding the cancer cells into the portal vein, retroperitoneum, and/or peritoneal cavity. In an effort to overcome these problems, we have developed a surgical technique for no-touch pancreatoduodenectomy. METHODS: From March 2005 through May 2008, 42 patients have been operated on following this technique. Resected margins were microscopically analyzed. RESULTS: We

A survey of injuries sustained in the game of touch.

Three hundred and forty-five Touch football players were retrospectively surveyed to determine the nature and incidence of injuries sustained over a one year period. The definition of injury was that it prevented playing or training for at least one week. A total of 177 injuries were sustained by 117 players who participated in a total of 1043 hours of playing and training each week. The injury rate was 4.85/1000 hours of playing or training which was less than in other football codes. This rate was significantly more (p < 0.05) among males and no relationship was evident based on representati

Affective touch reduces histamine evoked itch experience.

Itch is a commonly experienced symptom of skin diseases such as eczema. Topical corticosteroid medications are widely used in chronic itch conditions but can lead to skin thinning, and in certain cases, topical corticosteroid withdrawal. As such, non-pharmaceutical alternatives are being researched. The present research explored affective touch (slow stroking, gentle touch signalled by C-tactile afferents) as a strategy to reduce histamine induced itch. Whilst experiencing histamine induced itch on the volar side of the forearms/wrist, participants (n = 60) were subjected to 3 experimental con

Effects of Distributed Friction During Sliding Touch.

Friction modulation allows for a range of different tactile sensations and textures to be simulated on flat touchscreens, yet is largely unable to render fundamental interactions such as tracing the edge of a line or shape; an edge consists of straddling two different states, yet friction modulating screens traditionally apply only one friction force at a time to the whole finger. In order to expand the range of sensations rendered via friction modulation, in this paper we explore the possibility of applying spatial feedback on the fingerpad via differing friction forces on flat touchscreens.

Three-Dimensional Touch Device with Two Terminals.

A crossbar array is an essential element that determines the operating position and simplifies the structure of devices. However, in the crossbar array, wiring numerous electrodes to address many positions poses significant challenges. In this study, a method is proposed that utilizes only two electrodes to determine multiple positions. The method significantly simplifies the wiring and device fabrication process. Instead of defining the node location of the crossbar, it is experimentally demonstrated that the x-y-z coordinates can be determined from i) the resistance change as a function of d

Affective Touch Reduces Electrically Induced Itch Experience.

Introduction: Itch is a common symptom in dermatologic and other diseases and can have a severe impact on quality of life and mental health. As a proportion of patients with itch-symptoms is resistant to commonly used anti-histamine treatments, development of new treatments is desirable. Past research on pain, itch and affective touch (i.e. slow, gentle stroking of the skin activating C-tactile fibers) revealed an inhibitory relationship between affective touch and pain and between pain and itch. Given the overlap in neural processing between these three sensory submodalities, a possible inter

Toe-touch weight bearing: myth or reality?

Toe-touch weight bearing and partial weight bearing are commonly prescribed orders. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the validity of toe-touch weight bearing and partial weight bearing regimens. Twenty-five orthopedic surgeons participated in the study. They were asked to answer a questionnaire regarding toe-touch weight bearing and partial weight bearing definitions, and were asked to bear weight partially according to the accepted definitions of each order. Weight bearing on the affected limb was measured by the SmartStep System (Andante Medical Devices, Ltd, Omer, Israel). There was
