A 35-year-old female was referred to our hospital with bilateral loss of vision of two days duration. Contrast sensitivity was measured by means of Arden grating plates in 100 patients on medication for pulmonary tuberculosis. The scores were abnormal in 38.2% of the patients whose therapy included ethambutol for three months, and 36.7% of the patients on similar treatment for six months. Leber hereditary optic neuropathy is a mitochondrial disease mainly due to pathologic mutations in mitochondrial genes related to the respiratory complex I of the oxidative phosphorylation system. Genetic, physiological, and environmental factors modulate the penetrance of these mutations. We report two patients suffering from this disease and harboring a m.15950G > A mutation in the mitochondrial DNA-encoded gene for the threonine transfer RNA. We also provide evidences supporting the pathogenicity of this mutation.

PURPOSE: To identify the specifics of structural and functional changes in patients with toxic optical neuropathy caused by acute methanol poisoning.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: One female patient with toxic optic neuropathy (TON), 2 male patients with partial optic atrophy caused by methanol poisoning, and 1 male patient with methanol intoxication after ethanol containing alcohol use were examined with kinetic perimetry and optical coherence tomography.
RESULTS: Patients with TON caused by acute methanol poisoning were observed to have decreasing visual acuity to the extent of complete blindness.

Cobalt is a widely used in the industrial production of hard metals. Cobalt ingestion has been reported to cause widespread systemic toxicity, but its effects on vision have been sparsely reported. The authors report the case of a patient who ingested cattle magnets, which remained in his stomach for an unknown duration of time. These magnets largely consist of cobalt that gradually leached into his blood stream, resulting in protean systemic manifestations, which included optic atrophy.

Clinical case A patient with chronic, painless, bilateral loss of vision, after significant intake of interferon (IFNα) and ribavirina due to liver transplant. Ocular fundus is normal. A suspected retrobulbar optic neuropathy is confirmed by a prolongation of the latency of the patient's visual evoked potential.
