Six patients known to have inoperable esophageal carcinoma presented with stridor due to both malignant tracheal stenosis (with additional respiratory-digestive tract fistula in 2 patients) and bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Patency was restored by endotracheal stenting plus unilateral cordotomy. Four patients had immediate relief. Two patients required enlargement of the vocal cord incision. One of them declined reoperation and underwent tracheostomy. The stent function was uneventful, with no dislodgment or mucus impaction. The fistula seal was complete, with no aspiration through the newly

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of lower respiratory tract disease in infants. The role of inflammatory mediators in the pathogenesis of RSV disease is not well-understood. The present study was designed (1) to determine whether RANTES (regulated on activation, normal T cell expressed and presumably secreted), macrophage-inflammatory protein-1-alpha (MIP-1-alpha), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and IL-10 can be detected in respiratory secretions of children with RSV infection and (2) to assess whether the concentrations of these cytokines in respiratory secreti

BACKGROUND: While pulmonary aspergillosis constitutes a common fungal infection with typical respiratory manifestations, its association with tracheal cartilage exfoliation is an exceedingly rare complication. This report describes a case in a 55-year-old female, detailing the clinical presentation, therapeutic management, and follow-up to elucidate this unusual disease process.
CASE PRESENTATION: A middle-aged diabetic woman presented with cough, wheezing, and sputum. Imaging and bronchoscopy identified a tracheal mass, with biopsy confirming fungal (likely Aspergillus) infection.During intr

Two infants with congenital heart disease developed life-threatening airway obstruction due to progressive dilatation of the aorta. Both underwent posterior aortic plication with extracorporeal bypass (9 and 4 months of age). After surgery, the arterial diameter was adequately reduced with a smooth aortic route leading to a wide airway space. Both patients were weaned from the ventilator shortly after surgery and are currently asymptomatic.

Saber sheath trachea is a tracheal deformity characterized by marked transverse narrowing relative to the anteroposterior diameter and is frequently associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although saber sheath trachea has been discussed as a potentially challenging airway in anesthetic practice, perioperative airway complications have been reported mainly in individual case reports, and their true incidence, severity, and clinical implications remain uncertain. We report the anesthetic management of an elderly patient with COPD and saber sheath trachea undergoing laparos

Murine intrapulmonary tracheal transplantation (IPTT) is used as a model of obliterative airway disease (OAD) following lung transplantation. Initially reported by our team, this model has gained use in the study of OAD due to its high technical reproducibility and suitability for investigating immunological behaviors and therapeutic interventions. In the IPTT model, a rodent tracheal graft is directly inserted into the recipient's lung through the pleura. This model is distinct from the heterotopic tracheal transplantation (HTT) model, wherein grafts are transplanted into subcutaneous or omen

Tracheal stenosis is an uncommon but severe problem after long-term intubation. Here, we report a patient who came from a containment zone of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and presented with complaints of breathlessness and cough. She was suspected to have an infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Later, she developed type 2 respiratory failure and carbon dioxide narcosis because of delay in diagnosis of severe, near-complete postintubation tracheal stenosis due to over suspicion of COVID-19 during the current pandemic.

Pneumonia is a common complication of boid inclusion body disease (BIBD) in snakes. The tracheal mucociliary apparatus of eight boas ( Boa constrictor) and two pythons ( Python regius, Morelia viridis) was examined to assess whether absent or reduced mucociliary clearance could be a predisposing factor. Nine of the examined snakes were positive for BIBD by detection of inclusion bodies and three had lung pathologies other than the formation of inclusion bodies. A considerable individual variation of ciliary beat frequency (CBF, 3.0 ± 0.75 Hz to 7.8 ± 1.27 Hz), transport speed (23.1 ± 12.56 μm/

We report a case of tracheal, laryngeal and pulmonary mucormycosis in a patient receiving immunosuppressive medication for an autoinflammatory fever syndrome. Mucormycosis was confirmed by histopathology from tracheal specimens and molecular evidence of Lichtheimia. A surgical approach was not possible because of the multifocal disease pattern and the extent of tracheal involvement. The patient was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B followed by posaconazole maintenance therapy. After 9 months, recurrent pulmonary mucormycosis was suspected but emerged as organizing pneumonia wi

We report the case of a 61-year-old female, who presented with a history of chronic fatigue, dyspnea on exertion, a widened mediastinum with tracheal deviation on chest X-ray, and a neck mass. After a diagnostic workup, the patient was found to have a paratracheal mass extending into the chest in addition to a 6.5 cm ascending aortic aneurysm with aortic insufficiency, and a 70% stenosis of the right coronary artery. She underwent successful resection of a substernal goiter via a neck incision facilitated by a previously performed sternotomy for a concomitant ascending aortic root replacement

In mechanically ventilated neonates, the instrumental dead space is a major determinant of total minute ventilation. By flushing this dead space, continuous tracheal gas insufflation (CTGI) may allow reduction of the risk of overinflation. We conducted a randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy of CTGI in reducing airway pressure over the entire period of mechanical ventilation while maintaining oxygenation. A total of 34 preterm newborns, ventilated in conventional pressure-limited mode, were enrolled in two study arms, to receive or not receive CTGI. Transcutaneous Pa(CO(2)) (tcPa(CO(2))) w

Upper airway obstruction is a prevalent feature in patients with Down syndrome. However, these patients may be completely asymptomatic in the early months of life. The recognition of a problem within the airway quite often occurs when these children present for cardiac surgery, diagnostic radiography with sedation, or during the induction and intubation for anesthesia. Tracheal stenosis is rare in the general population, but is seen somewhat more frequently in patients with Down syndrome. The incidence of tracheal stenosis in children with congenital heart disease, which is seen in 40% of pati

Phospholipid analysis of tracheal aspirates obtained from 37 newborn infants, all intubated for respiratory diseases, was performed in order to compare infants having hyaline membrane disease (HMD) (n = 11), to those presenting with transient tachypnoea (TT) (n = 16) or another respiratory disorder (n = 10) and to determine if distinguishing features could be discovered for HMD or TT. In the HMD group, a significantly lower amount (about 20%) of recoverable phospholipid material was observed. Furthermore, the groups differed in their phospholipid profile: infants with HMD presented with a defi

Kawasaki disease (KD) is usually diagnosed based on its characteristic mucocutaneous manifestations. However, in incomplete KD, where these features are not fully present, diagnosis is often delayed, and differentiation from other conditions, such as deep neck infection, is crucial. We report the case of a four-year-old boy who presented with anterior cervical swelling and lateral tracheal deviation, initially suspected to have a deep neck infection. On the fourth day of fever, he exhibited left anterior cervical swelling, trismus, and imaging findings of retropharyngeal edema. Despite antibio

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4- RD) is a systemic inflammatory condition that can affect any part of the body, although airway involvements are rarely seen. Herein, we report a case of young female with tracheal involvement associated with IgG4-RD. She was a 16-year-old patient admitted to the hospital with dyspnea and treated with methylprednisolone and methotrexate. We reviewed the clinical characteristics of 18 previously reported cases of tracheal stenosis with IgG4-RD. The most common symptoms were dyspnea (63.2%), cough, and wheezing. Nine patients (47.4%) had isolated tracheal

It is generally accepted that as bovine respiratory disease (BRD) develops, bacterial pathogens first proliferate in the nasopharynx and then colonize the lungs, leading to bronchopneumonia. However, such temporal changes have never been definitively demonstrated. Therefore, the objective was to describe the progression of the nasopharyngeal and tracheal bacterial microbiotas of feedlot cattle during development of BRD. Nasopharyngeal swabs and tracheal wash samples were collected from 24 heifers over 20 d after arrival at a feedlot. Heifers were assessed daily and sampled based on reticulo-ru

Congenital tracheal stenosis (CTS), though rare, is important because the mortality and morbidity rates are high in infants. Especially, associated congenital heart disease (CHD) in these infants may compound the effects of airway pathology. A 3-week-old patient with long-segmental tracheal stenosis below an anomalous right-upper lobe (RUL) bronchus had undergone a total correction of double outlet right ventricle. On third postoperative day, hypercarbia developed, and severe airway obstruction and atelectasis were detected. An emergency slide tracheoplasty was performed under cardiopulmonary
