Coping among Afghan Former Unaccompanied Refugee Children in the UK: A Qualitative Study Exploring Barriers and Influences Over Time.

Unaccompanied Refugee Minors (URMs) are an extremely vulnerable refugee group, at heightened risk of adversity and trauma, as well as long-term, severe mental health difficulties. There is a lack of research providing a contextual understanding of difficulties and active resilience processes to inform how to promote URM wellbeing. This qualitative study explored the difficulties and coping responses of former URMs from Afghanistan and perceptions of how and from where coping strategies are developed. Reflexive Thematic Analysis of 12 interviews generated three overarching themes: "Difficulties

Mental health care for unaccompanied young refugees in Germany through a stepped care approach versus enhanced usual care: a cluster-randomised hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Unaccompanied young refugees are a vulnerable group with high rates of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Stepped care approaches are recommended as a potential treatment framework, but research on the effectiveness of these models remains scarce. We aimed to compare a stepped care approach for unaccompanied young refugees with enhanced usual care under real-world conditions. METHODS: In this cluster-randomised controlled type I hybrid implementation-effectiveness trial, we compared two active conditions, BETTER CARE and enhanced usual care, for unaccompanied young refugees in

Validation of the multiple language versions of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-37 for refugee adolescents.

The objective of this study is to provide preliminary psychometric properties of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-37 (HSCL-37A) for refugee adolescents. The HSCL-37A is a modification of the well-known HSCL-25 and assesses symptoms of internalizing and externalizing problems that have been associated with reactions to trauma. Four independent heterogeneous samples (N=3890) of unaccompanied refugee minors, immigrants, and native Dutch and Belgian adolescents were assessed at school. The confirmative factor analyses, per language version, support the two-factor structure of internalizing and extern

Urbanization, mental health, and oral health inequalities in left-behind youth: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated mental and oral health outcomes among left-behind children (LBC) affected by urbanization-driven rural-urban labour migration. Although mental health impacts of parental migration are increasingly recognized, oral health outcomes remain underexplored. This review synthesizes available evidence, quantifies disparities, and identifies shared social and structural determinants. RECENT FINDINGS: Thirty-three studies met inclusion criteria. Pooled analyses revealed significantly higher depressive symptoms among LBC compared to n

Depression in left-behind children: a network analysis and chained mediation of attachment and emotion regulation.

BACKGROUND: Urbanization has swelled the ranks of left-behind children (LBC), whose mental health - especially depression - now draws mounting global concern. Previous studies have shown that LBC are more prone to develop insecure parental attachments and tend to adopt maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, both established predictors of depression. OBJECTIVE: Investigate the specific pathways through which attachment and emotion regulation mediate the impact of left-behind experiences on depression. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: In three middle schools in Qiqihar, a total of 1,125 children

Age estimation of unaccompanied migrant adolescents for judicial purposes: a bayesian approach.

Judicial authorities are increasingly concerned by determining the age of unaccompanied adolescents or young adults under suspicion. When other approaches are considered insufficient, courts demand appropriate medical tests. Part of those tests aim at determining the civil age through skeletal age. However, this determination is subject to a large uncertainty and it is difficult to assess its amount of accuracy. To a large extent the problem is statistical and the previous statistical proposals suffer from serious drawbacks. For instance, they rest, at least partially, on assumptions or conven

Assessing quality of life in displaced children on Lesvos using PROMIS: a mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the ongoing global refugee crisis, around 400 million children are currently displaced. We investigate domains of quality of life (QoL) in two groups of displaced children; children living with their caregivers in Closed Control Access Centre (CCAC) Mavrovouni and unaccompanied minors (UAMs) in designated shelters on Lesvos, Greece. METHODS: A mixed-methods study using PROMIS® to quantitatively assess domains of QoL compared to a reference group by using a one-sample Wilcoxon sign-rank test. Associated variables were identified by multivariable linear regression analyses.

Narcotic offences and drug use disorders among young refugees in Norway.

AIMS: We examined the patterns of healthcare utilisation for drug use disorders (DUDs) and charges related to narcotics among young refugees in Norway considering the role of sex, country of origin and condition of arrival (accompanied versus unaccompanied minors). METHODS: Based on national registers, sex-stratified Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios to assess the risk of being charged with a narcotics offence and the use of healthcare services related to DUDs. The sample consisted of 15,068 young refugees and 573,241 young Norwegians born in Norway to two Norwegian-bo

Association between childhood maltreatment patterns and comorbidity of depression and anxiety in left-behind children: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) represents a significant risk factor for depression and anxiety symptoms, with left-behind children (LBC) demonstrating heightened exposure. Existing studies have been restricted to certain types of CM, and paid little attention to comorbidity of depression and anxiety in LBC. This study aimed to comprehensive assess the association between CM patterns and comorbidity of depression and anxiety in LBC. METHOD: A total of 7928 LBC was included in this cross-sectional study. Latent class analysis was used to identify the CM patterns. Logistic regression was

Increasing childhood vaccination coverage of the refugee and migrant population in Greece through the European programme PHILOS, April 2017 to April 2018.

After the 2016 Balkan route border closures, vaccination of refugee children in Greece was mainly performed by non-governmental organisations. Activities varied between camps, resulting in heterogeneity of vaccination coverage (VC). In April 2017, the European programme 'PHILOS - Emergency health response to refugee crisis' took over vaccination coordination. Interventions were planned for the first time for refugee children in the community and unaccompanied minors at safe zones. From April 2017-April 2018, 57,615 vaccinations were performed against measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) (21,031), dipht

Study of the ethnicity's influence on the third molar maturity index (I3M) for estimating age of majority in living juveniles and young adults.

Estimation of age of majority has important applications in the forensic daily practice because of the increasing demand for age estimates of unaccompanied minors. Diagnostic accuracy of I3M to assess legal adult age of 18 years has been already tested in several specific population samples. The aim of this work was to compare the available data about sensitivity and specificity of the third molar maturity index (I3M) from five different regional groups' radiographic samples to study possible ethnical difference. For this purpose, a sample of 6157 orthopantomograms (OPGs), coming from 15 count

Health, Homelessness Severity, and Substance Use among Sexual Minority Youth Experiencing Homelessness: A Comparison of Bisexual Versus Gay and Lesbian Youth.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ) youth are overrepresented among youth experiencing homelessness (YEH), and health disparities among LGBQ youth are well-documented. LGBQ youth are typically aggregated as a single sexual minority group; however, research suggests that bisexual youth may have greater mental health, substance use, and physical health risks relative to their gay and lesbian peers. In a probability sample of LGBQ YEH in Los Angeles County (n = 183), we examined subgroup differences in homelessness severity, depression, physical health, and substance use, focusing on d
