Validity of the Learning Process Questionnaire with students of lower academic attainment.

The Learning Process Questionnaire was administered to 692 secondary school students (308 boys, 380 girls, and 4 unspecified) in the Philippines. The ages of the participants ranged from 14 to 22 years, with an average of 15 yr. An exploratory factor-analysis procedure was conducted for the entire sample, for the lower achievers (n = 333), and for higher achievers (n = 359). The factor structure of the Learning Process Questionnaire was uninterpretable with data obtained from students of lower academic achievement.

Anger assessment in rural high school students.

Anger and aggression in school children are a major concern in American society today. Students with high anger levels and poor cognitive processing skills are at risk for poor relationships, underachievement in school, and health problems. This article describes characteristics of children who are at risk for high anger levels and aggression as well as those who are able to modulate their anger. Results of a survey are reported which describe levels of anger in 624 rural high school students. This sample reported lower levels of anger, compared to the normative group. Differences among the sa

Language, speech, and educational outcomes of otitis media.

OBJECTIVE: This article, through a summary of the current literature available, studies the relationship between recurrent otitis media (OM) and communication (speech and language) and educational development. Areas discussed include historical and current views of their relationship, hearing loss and auditory abilities, language and speech development, and educational (cognitive and academic) performance of children with histories of OM. As well, the authors present a model for the use of physicians, communications specialists, and educators when dealing with such children. CONCLUSION: Despi

Learning disorders.

Three broad areas of LDs are recognized in the DSM-IV (RD, mathematics disorder, and disorder of written expression), and many atypical LDs (such as NVLD) also may be found in children with academic underachievement. These disorders are defined by a significant discrepancy between a child's intellectual (learning) ability and specific area of academic achievement, based on individual psychologic testing. Interventions for these disorders begin with careful evaluation and testing, followed by meetings at the school and development of an IEP. The recommendations of the IEP are performed in the s

Developmental output failure: a study of low productivity in school-aged children.

Children with low academic productivity in late elementary and junior high school present a vexing problem to parents and schools. A subgroup of these youngsters may have underlying subtle handicaps that result in reduced productivity and chronic underachievement. Such children may be clinically characterized as exhibiting "developmental output failure." Using parent and teacher questionnaires, educational achievement tests, and pediatric neurodevelopmental assessments, a group of 26 children was selected according to predetermined criteria from among the clinic population seen in The School F

Long-term Cognitive Outcome of Children With Parenchymal Neurocysticercosis: A Prospective Observation Study.

To study the cognitive profile and scholastic performance of children with parenchymal neurocysticercosis. A total of 500 children with a diagnosis of neurocysticercosis and epilepsy registered in our pediatric neurocysticercosis clinic between January 1996 and December 2002 were enrolled. Patients were evaluated for their scholastic performance using their school grades. Cognitive assessment was done using Parental interview and the "Draw-a-Man" test. Poor scholastic performance was seen in 22.2% (111) children. Draw-a-Man test was done in 148 children; 18.2% (27/148) had scores equivalent to

Birth weight, neonatal morbidities, and school age outcomes in full-term and preterm infants.

In this prospective longitudinal study, birth weight and neonatal morbidities were evaluated relative to a broad range of school age outcomes. Fully 188 infants, 151 who were preterm, were recruited at birth, stratified by birth weight and socioeconomic status, and were followed until age 8 with a 97% retention rate. A gradient relationship was found among birth groups, with full-term children earning the highest scores. The very low birth weight and extremely low birth weight groups were equivocal in all scores except visual perception. The findings also were consistent with a pattern of nonv

Behavioral and cognitive subtypes of ADHD.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity symptoms are observed by teachers in 9.2% of a nonreferred elementary school population. Two subtypes of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a cognitive form and a behavioral form, are identified. The behavioral subtype includes about 80% of those identified and is characterized by distinct clinical phenomenology of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. These children can be described on a continuum of severity, with the most severe showing behavioral features indistinguishable from conduct disorder. Children with behavioral subtypes of ADHD

The cognitive and academic profiles of reading and mathematics learning disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to examine the cognitive and academic profiles associated with learning disability (LD) in reading comprehension, word reading, applied problems, and calculations. The goal was to assess the specificity hypothesis, in which unexpected underachievement associated with LD is represented in terms of distinctive patterns of cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses. At the start of 3rd grade, the authors assessed 684 students on five cognitive dimensions (nonverbal problem solving, processing speed, concept formation, language, and working memory), and across Gr

Psychosocial correlates of short stature and delayed puberty.

Studies relating to the psychosocial aspects of short stature and pubertal delay are reviewed. Although IQ scores show a statistical correlation with stature, significant intellectual, psychological, or academic deficits have not been consistently demonstrated for short children. However, hypopituitary growth failure is associated with poor social adjustment as an adult despite growth hormone therapy. The reasons for this remain unclear. Constitutional pubertal delay in boys can lead to social and academic problems. Treatment with a short course of testosterone can be beneficial in selected ca

Investigating behaviour from early- to mid-childhood and its association with academic outcomes in a cohort of children born at risk of neonatal hypoglycaemia.

High rates of academic underachievement at 9-10 years have been identified in children born at risk of neonatal hypoglycaemia. This study investigated the stability of behaviour from early to mid-childhood and how this relates to academic outcomes in children born with at least one risk factor of neonatal hypoglycaemia in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Behaviour data was collected using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Child Behaviour Checklist 1.5-5, and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for 466 children (52 % male; 27 % Māori, 60 % New Zealand European, 2 % Pacific, 11

Prevention of preterm delivery in twin pregnancy.

The incidence of twin gestation has increased markedly over the past decades, mostly because of increased use of assisted reproductive technologies. Twin pregnancies are at increased risk of preterm delivery (i.e. birth before 37 weeks of gestation). Multiple gestations therefore account for 2-3% of all pregnancies but constitute at least 10% of cases of preterm delivery. Complications from preterm birth are not limited to the neonatal period, such as in retinopathy of prematurity, intraventricular haemorrhage, necrotising enterocolitis, respiratory disorder and sepsis; they can also constitut

Coexisting disorders and academic achievement among children with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: ADHD is a commonly diagnosed neuropsychological disorder among school-aged children with reported high rates of coexisting or comorbid disorders. As ADHD has been associated with academic underachievement, the current study examines this association in view of the presence of coexisting disorders. The purpose of the current study is to examine the relationship between the presence of coexisting disorders and academic achievement among children with ADHD using a large, nationally representative, and community-based sample. METHOD: To achieve this purpose, the presence of coexisting

What is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder?

ADHD is a highly prevalent condition with the core symptoms of functionally impairing limitations in sustained attention and impulsivity/overactivity. Other frequent symptoms include overemotionality or overreactivity, academic underachievement, low self-esteem, and interpersonal difficulties. The assessment for and diagnosis of ADHD are complicated by the lack of a specific test or marker for the disorder, the occurrence of symptoms along a continuum in the population, and its frequent association with other neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. Due to the often pervasive effects of t
