Challenges to integrating sexual health issues into reproductive health programs in Uzbekistan.

This study examines the direction and result of efforts of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in the area of reproductive and sexual health in Uzbekistan. It focuses specifically on the institutional, structural, epidemiological, and cultural forces responsible for the exclusion of sexual health issues from reproductive health campaigns in the most populous Central Asian country. In Uzbekistan, as in other countries of the region, significant international support was given to NGOs providing reproductive health services in the mid-to-late-1990s, well into the early period of the HIV/AIDS pan

Screening the leaching tendency of pesticides applied in the Amu Darya Basin (Uzbekistan).

The Amu Darya River, one of the most important water resources for Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, was declared a World Disaster Zone in 1991. The great increase in irrigation and the use of pesticides has led to both a lack of water and drinking water contamination. The aim of the present study, part of an EU project on water management guidelines, was to evaluate the leachability of 71 organic pesticides commonly employed in the area, and to assess compounds that could potentially contaminate the river and impair drinking water quality. A multivariate approach is proposed for the pesticide scre

Water distribution system and diarrheal disease transmission: a case study in Uzbekistan.

Deteriorating water treatment facilities and distribution systems pose a significant public health threat, particularly in republics of the former Soviet Union. Interventions to decrease the disease burden associated with these water systems range from upgrading distribution networks to installing reverse osmosis technology. To provide insight into this decision process, we conducted a randomized intervention study to provide epidemiologic data for water policy decisions in Nukus, Uzbekistan, where drinking water quality is suboptimal. We interviewed residents of 240 households, 120 with and 1

[A medico-genetic study of isolates in Uzbekistan. III. Results of a cytogenetic study].

The cytogenetic examination of the population of the villages of Karakent and Ishan consisted of two directions: the study on the frequency of chromosome aberrations in the culture of lymphocytes and the diagnostics of anomalies and variants of karyotype. The frequency of chromosome aberrations of 40 individuals was studied. It is shown that the frequency of cells with chromosome aberrations of the individuals in different villages does not differ and on the average is 1,4%. The distribution of lymphocyte culture according to the number of aberrations corresponds to that of theoretical Puasson

Population‑based registry analysis of cervical cancer trends in Tashkent Uzbekistan 2014-2024.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among women in Uzbekistan, exceeding WHO elimination targets. Despite a school-based HPV vaccination program launched in 2019, screening coverage remains low, leading to delayed diagnoses; we examined cervical cancer trends in Tashkent (2014-2024) to evaluate the impact of the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) screening project and UNFPA/UNDP HPV testing initiatives. METHODS: We analyzed Tashkent City Oncoregister data for women diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer or carcinoma in situ (CIS

Case Report: Major right-sided hepatectomies in infants in Uzbekistan: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Liver resection is a critical surgical option for managing benign and malignant tumors, including rare and complex cases in pediatric patients. While such procedures are well-documented in adults, the surgical management of large liver neoplasms in infants poses unique challenges due to anatomical and physiological considerations, as well as the limited number of cases reported globally. AIM: This study aimed to describe the initial experiences with major hepatectomies in infants with large liver neoplasms at our center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From December 2023 to May 2024, fo

Sex workers, condoms, and mobility among men in Uzbekistan: implications for HIV transmission.

Uzbekistan has one of the fastest growing HIV epidemics in the world. In this study, men who reported mobility were compared to non-mobile men in regard to paying for sex and condom use during paid sex. The sample included 2333 men between the ages of 15 and 59 in Uzbekistan. Generalised linear models were used to assess the relationship between mobility, paid sex, and condom use while adjusting for possible confounders. Of the total sample, 103 (4.4%) reported engaging in paid sex and 43 (42%) reported using condoms while engaging in paid sex. Mobile men were found to have more than three tim

Diversity of lice and flea- and lice-borne pathogens in free-ranging dogs in Uzbekistan.

Vector-borne diseases pose a significant threat to human and animal health worldwide, with arthropods, including fleas and lice, acting as key vectors for transmitting various pathogens. In Uzbekistan, where millions of domestic dogs coexist with humans, the diversity of vector-borne pathogens carried by ectoparasites remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the diversity and prevalence of lice and pathogens carried by fleas and lice collected from domestic dogs in Uzbekistan. Ectoparasites were collected from 77 dogs across five regions and subjected to morphological identi

Species Diversity With Comprehensive Annotations of Wood-Inhabiting Poroid and Corticioid Fungi in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan, located in Central Asia, harbors high diversity of woody plants. Diversity of wood-inhabiting fungi in the country, however, remained poorly known. This study summarizes the wood-inhabiting basidiomycte fungi (poroid and corticoid fungi plus similar taxa such as Merismodes, Phellodon, and Sarcodon) (Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota) that have been found in Uzbekistan from 1950 to 2020. This work is based on 790 fungal occurrence records: 185 from recently collected specimens, 101 from herbarium specimens made by earlier collectors, and 504 from literature-based records. All data were
