Beekeepers attempt to manage their honey bee colonies in ways that optimize colony health. Disentangling the impact of management from other variables affecting colony health is complicated by the diversity of practices used and difficulties handling typically complex and incomplete observational datasets. We propose a method to 1) compress multi-factored management data into a single index, to holistically investigate the real world impact of management on colony mortality, and 2) simplify said index to identify the core practices for which a change in behavior is associated with the greatest

The paradigm for all toxicological bioassays in the risk assessment of pesticide registration reflects the principle that experimental conditions should be controlled to avoid any other factors that may affect the endpoint measures. As honeybee colonies can be frequently exposed to bio-aggressors in real conditions, often concomitantly with pesticides, co-exposure to pesticide/bio-aggressors is becoming a concern for regulatory authorities. We investigated the effects of the neonicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam on the homing performances of foragers emerging from colonies differentiated by h

The presence of Varroa destructor in colonies of Apis mellifera is explained by the interaction among a number of factors including beekeeping practices and surrounding environment features. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative impact of environment geographical region and beekeeping management on Varroa infestation levels throughout a year. A monitoring study was carried out during 2015 in north-central regions from Argentina, consisting of three sampling dates: 1) autumn survey before autumn acaricide treatment; 2) autumn survey after autumn acaricide treatment and 3) spring su

Honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies of African and European descent were compared for levels of Varroa destructor infestation in 3 different ecological regions in Mexico. The 300 colonies that were studied were located in subtropical, temperate sub-humid, and temperate dry climates. The morphotype and mitotype of adult bees as well as their rates of infestation by varroa mites were determined. Additionally, the number of combs with brood and covered with bees was recorded for each colony. The highest frequency of colonies that were classified as African-derived was found in the subtropical env

Tropilaelaps mercedesae is a major ectoparasitic mite threatening the western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.), yet the lack of standardized in vitro rearing methods limits mechanistic studies of its biology and control. Here, we extended a gelatin capsule-based rearing method for Varroa destructor to establish an verage, each reproducingin vitro platform for T. mercedesae. Reproductively primed females were co-cultured with freshly capped worker bee larvae (≤ 24 h post-capping) in gelatin capsules until honey bee emergence. To evaluate the efficacy of this method, the fitness of the original fou

Given recent pathogen-mediated pollinator declines, there is concern regarding virus spillover from managed honeybees to wild pollinators. While the parasitic mite Varroa destructor specializes on honeybees, the viruses it transmits are widespread throughout pollinator communities. Here, we investigated whether beekeeper control of varroa mites influences the magnitude of deformed wing virus (DWV) spillover into wild pollinators. We sampled 27 apiaries along a gradient of mite infestation, screening nearly 1000 pollinators and 350 flowers for DWV via quantitative PCR. We found that controlling

Varroa destructor is one of the main causes of colony losses of the western honey bee (Apis mellifera). Many efforts exist to breed honey bees resistant to V. destructor. Varroa sensitive hygiene (VSH) is a commonly selected behavioural trait; VSH workers remove the pupae of mite infested brood cells with high efficiency, interrupting the reproduction of the mite. The cues and triggers for this behaviour are not yet fully understood. To determine what elicits this removal behaviour, we examined preselected VSH workers´ responses to four different groups of objects inserted into freshly capped

BACKGROUND: Over the last two decades, honey bees (Apis mellifera) have suffered high rates of colony losses that have been attributed to a variety of factors, chief among which are viral pathogens, such as deformed wing virus (DWV), whose virulence has increased because of vector-based transmission by the invasive, ectoparasitic varroa mite (Varroa destructor). A shift in the experimental mode of transmission of the black queen cell virus (BQCV) and sacbrood virus (SBV) from fecal/food-oral (direct horizontal) to vector-mediated (indirect horizontal) transmission also results in high virulenc

Managed honey bee (Apis mellifera) populations play a crucial role in supporting pollination of food crops but are facing unsustainable colony losses, largely due to rampant disease spread within agricultural environments. While mounting evidence suggests that select lactobacilli strains (some being natural symbionts of honey bees) can protect against multiple infections, there has been limited validation at the field-level and few methods exist for applying viable microorganisms to the hive. Here, we compare how two different delivery systems-standard pollen patty infusion and a novel spray-b

BACKGROUND: Varroa destructor mites, and the numerous viruses they vector to their honey bee hosts, are among the most serious threats to honey bee populations, causing mortality and morbidity to both the individual honey bee and colony, the negative effects of which convey to the pollination services provided by honey bees worldwide. Here we use a combination of targeted assays and deep RNA sequencing to determine host and microbial changes in resistant and susceptible honey bee lineages. We focus on three study sets. The first involves field sampling of sympatric western bees, some derived f

The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor is responsible for the death of millions of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies worldwide. Testing potential miticide compounds with different delivery methods that effectively control V. destructor and have low toxicity for honey bees is crucial to manage this parasite in hives. We determined the varroacide efficacy of three natural compounds delivered to hives with three application methods over a 4-week period. Oxalic acid in a sucrose solution was applied impregnated in cardboard (T1). A mixture of oregano and clove oils in an ethanol-gelatin soluti

The devastating effects of Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman on European honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera L.) have been well documented. Not only do these mites cause physical damage to parasitised individuals when they feed on them, they also transmit viruses and other pathogens, weaken colonies and can ultimately cause their death. Nevertheless, not all honeybee colonies are doomed once Varroa mites become established. Some populations, such as the savannah honeybee, A. m. scutellata, have become tolerant after the introduction of the parasite and are able to withstand the presence of th

Commercial beekeepers in the US reported severe colony losses early in 2025, as colonies were being staged for their critical role in the almond pollination season in California. Average reported losses since the preceding spring exceeded 60%, with substantial variation among operations. Many colonies were still actively collapsing in January 2025, at which time pooled and individual samples were collected and then screened for levels of 13 known honey bee pathogens and parasites. Acute bee paralysis virus and other known viral pathogens were found at high levels in pooled bee samples from all

Varroa destructor is probably one of the greatest threats to honey bees. A potential natural acaricide, 2-heptanone (2 H) has shown promise in controlling mite populations in honey bee colonies, but the effects of prolonged systemic administration of 2 H on honey bee health remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effects of prolonged exposure to different concentrations of 2 H on honey bee (Apis mellifera carnica) survival, stress response, and neural system, comparing these effects with thymol. Sublethal effects were assessed by measuring the activity of two enzymes in bee heads and t

Bee declines have been partly attributed to the impacts of invasive or emerging parasite outbreaks. For western honeybees, Apis mellifera, major losses are associated with the virus-vectoring mite, Varroa destructor. In response, beekeepers have focused breeding efforts aimed at conferring resistance to this key parasite. One method of many is survival-based beekeeping where colonies that survive despite significant Varroa infestations produce subsequent colonies. We argue that this 'hands-off' approach will not always lead to Varroa resistance evolving but rather tolerance. Tolerance minimize

BACKGROUND: Owing to its systemic mode-of-action and ease of application, lithium chloride (LiCl) is an ideal varroacide for the control of Varroa destructor infestations in honey bee colonies. To better understand how LiCl functions within a colony, we screened different parts of honey bee anatomy for lithium accumulation. We wanted to elucidate the time-dependent effects of LiCl on V. destructor and its metabolism within honey bees when they were fed continuous LiCl treatments, as well as evaluate potential adverse effects such as accumulation in the hypopharyngeal glands of nurse bees, whic

Acarapis woodi (Rennie 1921) (Acari: Tarsonemidae) is one of the mites that settles in the respiratory system of honeybees (Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera, Apidae)) and distributed throughout the world. It causes significant economic losses on honey production. In Türkiye, studies on the existence of A. woodi are very limited and so far, no studies on the molecular diagnosis and phylogenetic of it have been reported in Türkiye. This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of A. woodi in Türkiye, especially in areas where beekeeping is intense. Diagnosis of A. woodi was performed usin

Chemical communication is a widely used mode of communication for social insects and has been demonstrated to be involved in many behaviours and physiological processes such as reproduction, nutrition or the fight against parasites and pathogens. In the honey bee, Apis mellifera, the release of chemical compounds by the brood plays a role in worker behaviour, physiology, and foraging activities and colony health as a whole. Several compounds have already been described as brood pheromones, such as components of the brood ester pheromone and (E)-β-ocimene. Several other compounds originating fr

A major contributor to bee colony decline is infestation with its most devastating pest, the mite Varroa destructor. To control these mites, thymol is often used, although how it achieves this is not understood. One well-documented action of thymol is to modulate GABA-activated ion channels, which includes insect RDL receptors, a known insecticidal target. Here we have cloned two Varroa RDL subunits, one of which is similar to the canonical RDL subunit, while the other has some differences in M4, and, to a lesser extent, M2 and its binding site loops. Expression of this unusual RDL receptor in

Hygienic behavior is a key trait in the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) associated with resistance to diseases and tolerance to the parasitic mite Varroa destructor. Worker bees expressing this behavior are able to detect and remove unhealthy or infested brood, thereby limiting pathogen transmission and mite reproduction. In recent years, the gut microbiota has emerged as an important factor in honey bee health, influencing immunity and disease resistance. Hygienic behavior is a form of social immune defense; however, whether gut microbiota composition contributes to variation in this disea
