Vascular risk and low serum B12 predict white matter lesions in patients with major depression.

BACKGROUND: While patients with depression have been shown to have a greater incidence of vascular risk factors and structural brain changes, any association with dietary co-factors is unclear. METHODS: Forty-seven patients with major depression (mean age = 52.8 years, SD = 12.6) and 21 healthy volunteers (mean age = 54.7 years, SD = 9.1) underwent high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging scanning. T2-weighted films were scored for deep white matter (DWM), periventricular (PV), and subcortical (SC) hyperintensities. RESULTS: There was no difference in lesion severity between patients and c

Chronomic community screening reveals about 31% depression, elevated blood pressure and infradian vascular rhythm alteration.

Depression, which is a risk factor for cardiac morbidity and mortality, is not an unusual occurrence among individuals with coronary heart disease (CHD), but evidence concerning its role in the pathogenesis of this condition is less clear. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) has become an important tool in the diagnosis and management of hypertension. Several previous studies have indicated that various kinds of target organ damage and cardiovascular morbidity are more strongly associated with a diagnosis by ABPM than through spot-checks in a clinical setting. This study investigated w

CT measurement of medial temporal lobe atrophy in Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, depression and paraphrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Measurement of medial temporal lobe atrophy (MTL) by computerised tomography (CT) may be a useful adjunct to the diagnosis of AD. The aim of this study was to assess the sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and diagnostic accuracy of CT measurement of MTL thickness for patients with probable AD, compared with a 'diseased' control group, and to correlate the measure with neuropsychological test scores. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: One hundred subjects were prospectively recruited: 60 with probable AD (mean age 73.7 years, mean Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE] 19.6),

Dihydromyricetin Modulates Neuropathic Pain and Depression: A Correlation with Hippocampal Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropathic pain (NP) is a multidisciplinary problem of medicine, psychology, sociology and economics. The emotional disorders caused by neuropathic pain are seriously underestimated. The dynamic interaction between the NP and emotional disorders greatly increasing the difficulty in clinical treatment, highlighting the importance of finding an effective treatment for neuropathic pain combined with depression. Dihydromyricetin (DHM) has been shown to be effective in improving neurological diseases due to its potent anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. METHODS: In this s

Impact of vascular risk factors on clinical outcome in elderly patients with depression receiving electroconvulsive therapy.

BACKGROUND: Although electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a highly effective, safe, and well-tolerated antidepressant treatment for late-life depression (LLD), there is large variability in response rates across individuals. We hypothesized that these variations would be in part explained by the level of vascular risk in this population. We therefore compared response rates to ECT in patients with LLD presenting with or without vascular risk factors (VRF). METHODS: 52 patients with LLD (age > 55) who received a course of ECT were separated into 2 groups according to the presence of VRF (n = 20)

Mesenchymal stromal cells protect against vascular damage and depression-like behavior in mice surviving cerebral malaria.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is one of the most critical global infectious diseases. Severe systemic inflammatory diseases, such as cerebral malaria, lead to the development of cognitive and behavioral alterations, such as learning disabilities and loss of memory capacity, as well as increased anxiety and depression. The consequences are profound and usually contribute to reduce the patient's quality of life. There are no therapies to treat the neurological sequelae of cerebral malaria. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) may be an alternative, since they have been used as therapy for neurodegenerative di

Vascular endothelial growth factor in bipolar depression: A potential biomarker for diagnosis and treatment outcome prediction.

BACKGROUND: Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) has been implicated in the neurotrophic model of depression. We explored the potential role of VEGF in the pathophysiology of bipolar depression and potential utility as a diagnostic or outcome predictive biomarker. METHODS: In a double-blind study, treatment-resistant bipolar depressed patients received Escitalopram and were randomized to receive add-on Celecoxib (26 participants) or Placebo (21 participants). There were 32 healthy controls. Plasma levels of VEGF were determined at three timepoints over eight weeks. RESULTS: Bipolar pati

S-Ketamine Rapidly Reverses Synaptic and Vascular Deficits of Hippocampus in Genetic Animal Model of Depression.

BACKGROUND: The neurovascular plasticity of hippocampus is an important theory underlying major depression. Ketamine as a novel glutamatergic antidepressant drug can induce a rapid antidepressant effect within hours. In a mechanistic proof of this concept, we examined whether ketamine leads to an increase in synaptogenesis and vascularization within 24 hours after a single injection in a genetic rat model of depression. METHODS: Flinders Sensitive Line and Flinders Resistant Line rats were given a single intraperitoneal injection of ketamine (15 mg/kg) or saline. One day later, their behavior

NF-κB/ICAM-1 signaling regulates vascular dysfunction in depressive hypertension rats.

The relationship between depression and hypertension has garnered increasing scholarly attention, particularly regarding the role of depression in exacerbating organ damage in hypertensive individuals. Inflammation is a key characteristic of organ damage associated with elevated blood pressure. However, the specific impact of inflammation on vascular dysfunction in hypertensive rats with depression has yet to be fully understood. This study examines the effects of the NF-κB inhibitor MG132 on blood pressure, depression-like behaviors, endothelial function, and vascular remodeling in hypertensi

Structural and Functional Disruptions in Subcortical Vascular Mild Cognitive Impairment With and Without Depressive Symptoms.

Many previous studies have revealed structural and functional abnormalities in patients with the subcortical vascular mild cognitive impairment (svMCI). Although depression symptoms were suggested to serve as a potential marker of conversion to dementia in patients with svMCI, whether these disruptions or other new findings will be identified in the svMCI comorbid with depression symptoms has not been established. In the current study, we combined voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the structural and functional disrup

Cognitive impairment in depression is not associated with neuropathologic evidence of increased vascular or Alzheimer-type pathology.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is common in depression, but underlying mechanisms remain unknown. We examined whether increases in Alzheimer-type or vascular pathology are associated with cognitive impairments in elderly depressed subjects. METHODS: Eleven subjects who had died during a well-documented episode of DSM-IV major depression were included. Neuropathologic assessments, blind to group membership, included standardized assessment of neuritic plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and Lewy Bodies in frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital cortices. Braak staging of Alzheimer pathology

[Long-term course of primary vascular pulmonary hypertension with and without intake of appetite depressants].

1. The long-term follow-up of 22 patients with anorectic drug intake (aminorex fumarate) (AS) and PVPH is compared to 38 patients with PVPH of unknown etiology. 2. The 10-year cumulative survival rate is significantly higher for the AF-positive group (54 +/- 11%) than for the AF-negative patients (15 +/- 6%). 3. In terms of the hemodynamic parameters at the time of diagnosis, there were no differences between the two patient groups. 4. Hemodynamic serial controls in the AF-positive group often show a decrease in pulmonary pressure at rest, in contrast to the AF-negative group. However, in all

Novel Insight into Neuroimmune Regulatory Mechanisms and Biomarkers Linking Major Depression and Vascular Diseases: The Dilemma Continues.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) represents a serious health problem estimated to affect 350 million people globally. Importantly, MDD has repeatedly emerged as an etiological or prognostic factor in cardiovascular disease (CVD) development, including vascular pathology. Several linking pathomechanisms between MDD and CVD involve abnormal autonomic regulation, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction as an early preclinical stage of atherosclerosis. However, the cause of accelerated atherosclerosis in MDD patients remains unclear. Recently, the causal relationships between MDD and mediator (e.
