Does functional vision behave differently in low-vision patients with diabetic retinopathy?--A case-matched study.

PURPOSE: A retrospective case-matched study designed to compare patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and other ocular diseases, managed in a low-vision clinic, in four different types of functional vision. METHODS: Reading, mobility, visual motor, and visual information processing were measured in the patients (n = 114) and compared with those in patients with other ocular diseases (n = 114) matched in sex, visual acuity (VA), general health status, and age, using the Activity Inventory as a Rasch-scaled measurement tool. Binocular distance visual acuity was categorized as normal (20/12.5-

[Prioritizing the development of clinical low vision rehabilitation institutions].

Low vision rehabilitation is an indispensable and integral part of the national eye health initiative, and it is directly related to the quality of life of tens of millions of people with visual impairment in China. Currently, the global prevalence of low vision continues to rise, and China has a large patient base of low vision. However, the accessibility of rehabilitation services remains severely inadequate, and the vast majority of people with visual disability cannot receive standardized visual rehabilition services. Based on the development history and current challenges of low vision re

Low-vision elders living arrangements, loneliness, and social support.

1. Loneliness was not found to be a significant problem in a study of low-vision older clients with various living arrangements. Different types of support networks did serve different functions depending on whether clients lived alone or with others. 2. Clients living alone were more satisfied with supporters who helped them when they were feeling down, whereas clients living with others were more satisfied with supporters who cared about them. 3. Clients living alone relied on friends and children as the most important sources of support; clients living with others relied most on children fo

[Low-vision aids in visually handicapped children (author's transl)].

It is reported on 71 visually handicapped pupils. The visual acuity of 48 of these children could be tested with low-vision aids and the electronic television reading apparatus (Reinecker). With telescopic glasses (Zeiss, Keeler) 31 children had an average improvement of their visual acuity of two lines on a test board for near vision (Birkhäuser). With the reading apparatus 43 children showed an improvement of the visual acuity of 5 more lines. Only 3 to 21 pupils, who had been offered a regular use of the telescopic glasses, decided to have one. Finally our own experiences are compared with

Causes of functional low vision in a Brazilian rehabilitation service.

There is limited information on functional low vision (FLV) in Latin America, especially in individuals under 50 years of age. In the present study, we retrospectively evaluated the medical records of 1393 consecutive subjects seen at a Brazilian tertiary rehabilitation service, from February 2009 to June 2016. We collected sociodemographic, clinical data, and information on optical aids and spectacle prescription. Subjects were divided into three age groups: 0 to 14 years old (children), 15 to 49 years old (young adults), and 50 years or older (older adults). The main etiologies leading to FL

METHODS: One hundred thirty-three low-vision participants completed an online survey. Participants reported the nature and history of their low vision, their usage of different assistive technologies, and time devoted to five visual re

Prevalence and causes of blindness and low vision in southern Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Blindness and low vision are thought to be common in southern Sudan. However, the magnitude and geographical distribution are largely unknown. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of blindness and low vision, identify the main causes of blindness and low vision, and estimate targets for blindness prevention programs in Mankien payam (district), southern Sudan. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A cross-sectional survey of the population aged 5 y and above was conducted in May 2005 using a two-stage cluster random sampling with probability proportional to size. Measurement of low vision in advanced cicatricial retinopathy of prematurity.

This study evaluates functional vision in visually impaired children with stage IV to V cicatricial retinopathy of prematurity (CROP) by comparing results derived from the Teller acuity cards and a battery of behavioral tasks, the visual function battery (VFB). Vision was evaluated in 26 eyes of 15 children ages 6 months to 14 years, who underwent retinal reattachment procedures for active stage IV and stage V retinopathy of prematurity. Results showed that 10 of 26 eyes (38%) had a recordable grating acuity to Teller acuity card assessment. Twenty-five of 26 eyes (96%) showed a response to th
