OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of flooring type and resident weight on external hand forces required to push floor-based lifts in long-term care (LTC).
BACKGROUND: Novel compliant flooring is designed to reduce fall-related injuries among LTC residents but may increase forces required for staff to perform pushing tasks. A motorized lift may offset the effect of flooring on push forces.
METHOD: Fourteen female LTC staff performed straight-line pushes with two floor-based lifts (conventional, motor driven) loaded with passengers of average and 90th-percentile r

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Patients with chronic functional constipation have some problems such as weakness of pelvic floor muscles, and a lack of coordination of pelvic floor and abdominal muscles has been seen. The goal of this study was to investigate the lumbar proprioception and the core muscle recruitment pattern.
METHODS: The study type is a cross-sectional case-control study. There were 30 participants (case, n = 15, and control, n = 15). Electromyography of the core muscles was recorded while the subjects were getting up from the chair accompanied by lifting a weight, to check the

This study compared shoulder and elbow joint forces and moments between weight-relief lifts (WRLs) and sitting pivot transfers (SPTs) among manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury (SCI) (N = 13) during biomechanical laboratory assessment. Minimum and maximum values were reported for each triaxial component of the joint force at the dominant shoulder and elbow during SPTs (leading and trailing roles) and WRLs. Peak shoulder flexor and adductor moments, along with elbow flexor and extensor moments, observed during the same period were also analyzed. The SPTs predominantly exposed (p < 0.

The size-weight illusion is a phenomenon where a smaller object is perceived heavier than an equally weighted larger object. The sensorimotor mismatch theory proposed that this illusion occurs because of a mismatch between efferent motor commands and afferent sensory feedback received when lifting large and small objects (i.e., the application of too little and too much lifting force, respectively). This explanation has been undermined by studies demonstrating a separation between the perceived weight of objects and the lifting forces that are applied on them. However, this research suffers fr

BACKGROUND: Lifting is generally considered as a risk factor for low back pain. A thorough investigation of the muscle function during lifting is essential for a better assessment of the potential risk of muscle impairment and towards improvements in lifting strategy. We aimed to compare the activities of the trunk muscles between the stoop and the squat lifting tasks.
METHODS: A surface electromyography device was used to measure the muscle activity during the full-cycle squat and the stoop lifting tasks of a 5-kg weight. Each task was divided into four stages: stage 1 was bending forward to

Thousands of children and adolescents participate in weight lifting for recreation or as a means of training for sports. Weight lifting can cause serious musculoskeletal injuries, such as ruptured intervertebral discs, spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis, fractures and meniscal injuries of the knee. Deaths related to weight lifting have been reported. Although the incidence of weight-lifting injuries is not well documented in children and adolescents, several reports indicate that few injuries occur in carefully supervised programs. The most common cause of injury appears to be loss of form wh

The relative importance of proprioception and vision in control of bimanual lifting of a box with varied weight and weight distribution was studied to test whether availability of vision improved the lifting motion in terms of box orientation and temporal synchrony of lifting the two sides of the box. Twelve right-handed young adults performed a random sequence of bimanual lifts of a box with varied weight and weight distribution. When lifting a symmetrically loaded box there was excellent temporal synchrony of the motions of the left and right side and minimal deviation from a level box orien

The effects of lifting boxes without handles, pulling long distances, carrying different size boxes, combining three handling tasks, and lifting with extended horizontal reach were studied using a psychophysical methodology. Six male industrial workers performed 42 variations of lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying tasks. Lifting boxes without handles produced consistent decreases (median, 16%) in maximum acceptable weights when compared with lifting boxes with handles. Lifting with extended horizontal reach (approximately 48 cm) produced consistent decreases (median, 48%) in maxi

BackgroundManual lifting tasks are a leading cause of occupational low back disorders (LBD).ObjectiveThis study aimed to predict the compressive force (CPF) at L5/S1 among young Thai lifting workers.MethodsSixty healthy Thais aged from 18 to 24, evenly divided by gender, performed repetitive lifting tasks with five different lifting frequencies (1, 2, 4, 6, and 12 lifts/minute). A three-dimension static strength prediction program (3D SSPP) was used to identify the injury risk on the low back L5/S1 using biomechanical criteria (compression and shear forces) at extreme postures. Multiple linear

BACKGROUND: The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) for Lifting is a manual material handling (MMH) assessment method to identify weight limits that nearly all workers may be exposed to without developing work-related low back disorders (LBD). However, this assessment method only applies to lifting with the torso within 30° asymmetry of the sagittal plane.
OBJECTIVE: Estimate TLV weight limits while lifting with torso asymmetry greater than 30° beyond the sagittal plane.
METHODS: Lifting tasks were performed from various horizontal

Trained weight lifters lift heavy loads without a concomitant degree of acute low-back injuries. To study the process by which large loads are lifted with minimal injury, integrated electromyographic signals were recorded from four large muscle groups: gluteus maximus, quadriceps, latissimus dorsi, and erector spinae in 4 weight lifters and 11 asymptomatic control subjects. These signals were recorded during a floor-to-knuckle-height isokinetic lift (dead lift) at 30.5 and 45.7 cm/sec. The signals were normalized for the height of the lift and the maximal isokinetic integrated electromyographi

The lifting and carrying of loads in agriculture on small landholdings are unavoidable. Rural communities often lack access to appropriate technologies which may result in various health hazards. The objective was to study gender participation in agricultural activities involving manual material handling tasks, to assess MSDs experienced in various MMH tasks and to evaluate traditional method and designed technology. The study was conducted on 100 agricultural workers. Data on gender participation in MMH tasks in household, animal husbandry and agriculture and resulting MSDs was gathered. Pre

Despite the well-recognized role of lifting in back injuries, the relative biomechanical merits of squat versus stoop lifting remain controversial. In vivo kinematics measurements and model studies are combined to estimate trunk muscle forces and internal spinal loads under dynamic squat and stoop lifts with and without load in hands. Measurements were performed on healthy subjects to collect segmental rotations during lifts needed as input data in subsequent model studies. The model accounted for nonlinear properties of the ligamentous spine, wrapping of thoracic extensor muscles to take curv
