Workplace violence among nursing professionals.

INTRODUCTION: The frequency of workplace violence has increased significantly across several countries, with short- and long-term effects on workers' health. Within the health care sector, nursing professionals are the most exposed to workplace violence, since they provide direct assistance to patients on a 24-hour basis. OBJECTIVES: To identify the types of occupational violence experienced by nursing professionals. METHODS: This was a descriptive, quantitative study of 55 nursing professionals in the emergency unit of a public hospital. Data were collected between April and June 2018 throu

Canadians vulnerable to workplace noise.

BACKGROUND: Health and safety legislation is designed to protect workers from hazards, including excessive noise. However, some workers are not required to use hearing protection when exposed to loud noise and may be vulnerable to adverse outcomes, including hearing difficulties and tinnitus. DATA AND METHODS: Data for 19- to 79-year-olds (n=6,571) were collected from 2012 through 2015 as part of the Canadian Health Measures Survey. People exposed to loud workplace noise were defined as those who had to raise their voices to communicate at arm's length. Vulnerable workers were defined as thos

Unreported workplace violence in nursing.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence occurs on a frequent basis in nursing. Most violent acts remain unreported. Consequently, we do not know the actual frequency of the occurrence of workplace violence. This requires research of nurses' actions following workplace violence and identification of reasons why most victims do not report violent acts in the appropriate manner. AIM: To explore violence in nursing as experienced by nurses in Slovenia. METHODS: A survey was carried out with a representative sample of nurses in Slovenia. The questionnaire Workplace Violence in Nursing was submitted to 375

[Workplace related anxiety and phobia].

Work is an important aspect of life. Problems at the workplace must therefore have negative consequences on the mental status and mental problems will interfere with the working place. The relation between anxiety and the workplace is especially important because the workplace causes anxiety due to its very nature. A common final pathway of mental disorders in general, and work related anxieties in particular, are workplace phobias, with panic when approaching or even thinking of the workplace. This is a serious complication with negative consequences for the further course of illness. It make

The Grey Anatomy of Workplace Mistreatment.

BACKGROUND: Workplace mistreatment in graduate medical education is typically measured using instruments with validity evidence, yet these tools may inadequately capture context-dependent experiences that vary by frequency, source, and setting. OBJECTIVE: To examine response frequency distributions from 2 mistreatment instruments used with residents and fellows whereby ambiguous ("grey") experiences appeared distinct from explicit mistreatment, and to assess the differential associations of each with resident well-being and burnout. METHODS: Using data collected in 2024 from the Workplace Ps

Interventions for prevention of bullying in the workplace.

BACKGROUND: Bullying has been identified as one of the leading workplace stressors, with adverse consequences for the individual employee, groups of employees, and whole organisations. Employees who have been bullied have lower levels of job satisfaction, higher levels of anxiety and depression, and are more likely to leave their place of work. Organisations face increased risk of skill depletion and absenteeism, leading to loss of profit, potential legal fees, and tribunal cases. It is unclear to what extent these risks can be addressed through interventions to prevent bullying. OBJECTIVES:

[Hearing loss in noisy workplaces].

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) from prolonged occupational exposure to noise continues was described. Since a therapy against NIHL is not currently available, it is important to take actions to minimize the exposure to noise. It is also important to perform auditory controls. In October 1992, the Ministry of Labour issued "Guidelines for Preventing Noise Induced Disorders" in Japan. The guidelines oblige employers who hire over fifty workers to take actions to prevent NIHL at the workplace that have the equivalent noise level of 85 dB (A) or higher. In fact there are lots of noise-induced d

Creating the best workplace on earth.

No organization can fulfill every hope and desire of its employees, so it helps to know which matter most to people. Goffee and Jones have identified the six most essential imperatives for creating an ideal work environment. Their insights come from surveys and interviews of hundreds of executives from all over the world. Few organizations embody all six attributes of the dream organization, many are difficult to achieve, and some even conflict with one another. But they nonetheless stand as an agenda for executives who wish to create the most productive, most rewarding workplace imaginable. A

Analyzing electrical hazards in the workplace.

In resolving the issues in analyzing electrical hazards in an industry, we must follow a path that will lead to a comprehensive analysis of the problems that exist and provide a quantified value to ensure the selection of appropriate personal protective equipment and clothing. An analysis of all three hazards--shock, arc, and blast--must be completed and steps taken to prevent injuries. The following steps could be taken to ensure adequacy of the electrical safe work practices program and training of "qualified" electrical personnel: 1. Conduct a comprehensive Job Task Analysis. 2. Complete a

Workplace ostracism and job performance: revisiting the limits of employee engagement in addressing workplace exclusion.

Workplace ostracism represents a subtle but damaging form of workplace exclusion that can weaken employees' psychological functioning and job-related outcomes. Drawing on self-regulation theory (SRT), this study examines the association between workplace ostracism and employee job performance and investigates whether employee engagement moderates this relationship. Data were collected from 477 employees working in IT, banking and insurance, BPO, and supply-chain/service roles and analysed using partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) through SmartPLS 4. The findings show t

Workplace Mobbing Among Nurses in Slovakia: The Impact of Education, Workplace Type, and Job Position.

INTRODUCTION: Workplace bullying, a widespread phenomenon, significantly impacts interpersonal relationships, mental health, professional performance, and organizational efficiency in healthcare. Defined as repeated behaviors intended to intimidate or degrade, bullying thrives in hierarchical, high-stress environments like hospitals, where nurses face disproportionate risk. Such behaviors harm morale, increase turnover, and jeopardize patient safety through errors and negligence. Understanding its prevalence and contributors is essential for fostering healthier work environments and improving

Relevance of workplace social mixing during influenza pandemics: an experimental modelling study of workplace cultures.

Workplaces are one of the most important regular meeting places in society. The aim of this study was to use simulation experiments to examine the impact of different workplace cultures on influenza dissemination during pandemics. The impact is investigated by experiments with defined social-mixing patterns at workplaces using semi-virtual models based on authentic sociodemographic and geographical data from a North European community (population 136 000). A simulated pandemic outbreak was found to affect 33% of the total population in the community with the reference academic-creative workpla
