[Principle requirements of an electromechanical transducer for implantable hearing aids in inner hearing hearing loss. II: Clinical aspects].

In cases of sensorineural hearing loss, an electromechanical transducer of implantable hearing aids should partially or completely compensate for the cochlea amplifier (CA) failure that occurs in most of these patients. CA failure can be clinically identified by a positive recruitment and amplitude loss in otoacoustic emissions (OAE). In a healthy ear, the basis of the CA is the motility of the outer hair cells. A transducer that replaces functions of the CA can be termed CAI (cochlea amplifier implant). A CAI should fulfill five requirements: (1) production of a vibratory output signal, (2) r

Task-based functional neural correlates of social cognition across autism and schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Autism and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) both feature atypical social cognition. Despite evidence for comparable group-level performance in lower-level emotion processing and higher-level mentalizing, limited research has examined the neural basis of social cognition across these conditions. Our goal was to compare the neural correlates of social cognition in autism, SSDs, and typically developing controls (TDCs). METHODS: Data came from two harmonized studies in individuals diagnosed with autism or SSDs and TDCs (aged 16-35 years), including behavioral social cognitive

Investigation of the neural correlates underlying action observation in multiple sclerosis patients.

Recent fMRI evidence indicates that both the execution and the observation of hand actions in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients increase recruitment of a portion of the so-called mirror neuron system. However, it remains unclear whether this is the expression of a compensatory mechanism for the coding of observed action or whether such a mechanism represents a rather unspecific functional adaptation process. Here we used fMRI on early relapsing remitting MS (RRMS) patients to clarify this issue. Functional images of 15 right-handed early RRMS patients and of 15 sex- and age-matched right-handed

Social Ties and Behavioral Diffusion of Tobacco Use in Arab American Networks.

Arab Americans (AAs) exhibit elevated rates of tobacco use, often influenced by their social networks (SN). Despite this, research has not comprehensively explored the mechanisms through which these relationships sustain tobacco use, and broader studies on social SNs provide limited insight into the influential SN attributes and interactions affecting AA communities. Guided by Berkman et al.’s (2000) SN and health framework, this study examined associations between SN structure, composition, relational and communication dynamics, and tobacco use among AAs. Variables included network size, dens

The effect of virtual body swapping with mental rehearsal on pain intensity and body perception disturbance in complex regional pain syndrome.

The present study investigated the effects of virtual body swapping with mental rehearsal on pain intensity and body perception disturbance (BPD) in patients with complex regional pain syndrome. Patients with complex regional pain syndrome were assigned randomly to three experimental groups: the 'virtual body swapping with mental rehearsal' (VBS) group (n=13), the 'watching movement only' group (n=13), and the 'mental rehearsal only' (n=13) group. Then, pretreatment pain intensity and BPD were compared with post-treatment perceptions. The results showed that pain intensity did not decrease sig

Shared and Distinct Neuroanatomic Regions Critical for Tool-related Action Production and Recognition: Evidence from 131 Left-hemisphere Stroke Patients.

The inferior frontal gyrus and inferior parietal lobe have been characterized as human homologues of the monkey "mirror neuron" system, critical for both action production (AP) and action recognition (AR). However, data from brain lesion patients with selective impairment on only one of these tasks provide evidence of neural and cognitive dissociations. We sought to clarify the relationship between AP and AR, and their critical neural substrates, by directly comparing performance of 131 chronic left-hemisphere stroke patients on both tasks--to our knowledge, the largest lesion-based experiment

Decreased leftward bias of prefrontal activity in autism spectrum disorder revealed by functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Hemodynamic responses in rostral prefrontal cortex (RoPFC) were measured by functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Although performance level was equal, autistic patients showed a decrease in leftward bias of the balance between right and left RoPFC activity when compared with typically developing children when anatomical imitation was contrasted with mirror-image imitation.

A Learning-Guided Meta-Heuristic Approach for Task Offloading in Four-Tier IoT Networks: A Hybrid UCB-ACO Algorithm.

The rapid development and expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem require managing increasing computational demands with the aid of advanced hierarchical architectures. The integration of a complete four-tier hierarchy-including Mobile, Edge, Fog, and Cloud layers-and the priority requirements are being overlooked in the literature despite the effort of existing studies. The goal of this study is to fill these gaps by proposing a novel, context-aware task-offloading framework designed for multi-dimensional ecosystems involving multi-server and multi-application environments. Efficacy assessment of novel methanimine derivatives in chronic constriction injury-induced neuropathic model: An in-vivo, ex-vivo and In-Silico approach.

The multicomponent etiology, complex clinical implications, dose-based side effect and degree of pain mitigation associated with the current pharmacological therapy is incapable in complete resolution of chronic neuropathic pain patients which necessitates the perpetual requirement of novel medication therapy. Therefore, this study explored the ameliorative aptitude of two novel methanimine imitative like (E)-N-(4-nitrobenzylidene)-4‑chloro-2-iodobenzamine (KB 09) and (E)-N-(4-methylbenzylidene)-4‑chloro-2-iodobenzamine (KB 10) in chronic constriction injury (CCI) of sciatic nerve induced neur

The role of the basal ganglia and cerebellum in adaptation to others' speech rate and rhythm: A study of patients with Parkinson's disease and cerebellar degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Spoken language is constantly undergoing change: Speakers within and across social and regional groups influence each other's speech, leading to the emergence and drifts of accents in a language. These processes are driven by mutual unintentional imitation of the phonetic details of others' speech in conversational interactions, suggesting that continuous auditory-motor adaptation takes place in interactive language use and plasticity of auditory-motor representations of speech persists across the lifespan. The brain mechanisms underlying this large-scale social-linguistic behavior

The impact of unilateral brain damage on anticipatory grip force scaling when lifting everyday objects.

The scaling of our finger forces according to the properties of manipulated objects is an elementary prerequisite of skilled motor behavior. Lesions of the motor-dominant left brain may impair several aspects of motor planning. For example, limb-apraxia, a tool-use disorder after left brain damage is thought to be caused by deficient recall or integration of tool-use knowledge into an action plan. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether left brain damage affects anticipatory force scaling when lifting everyday objects. We examined 26 stroke patients with unilateral brain damage

Surface-based information mapping reveals crossmodal vision-action representations in human parietal and occipitotemporal cortex.

Many lines of evidence point to a tight linkage between the perceptual and motoric representations of actions. Numerous demonstrations show how the visual perception of an action engages compatible activity in the observer's motor system. This is seen for both intransitive actions (e.g., in the case of unconscious postural imitation) and transitive actions (e.g., grasping an object). Although the discovery of "mirror neurons" in macaques has inspired explanations of these processes in human action behaviors, the evidence for areas in the human brain that similarly form a crossmodal visual/moto

Dyspraxia in autism: association with motor, social, and communicative deficits.

Impaired performance of skilled gestures, referred to as dyspraxia, is consistently reported in children with autism; however, its neurological basis is not well understood. Basic motor skill deficits are also observed in children with autism and it is unclear whether dyspraxia observed in children with autism can be accounted for by problems with motor skills. Forty-seven high-functioning children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), autism, or Asperger syndrome (43 males, four females; mean age 10y 7m [SD 1y 10m], mean Full-scale IQ (FSIQ) 99.4 [SD 15.9]), and 47 typically developing (TD)

Expertise with pathological actions modulates a viewer's motor system.

Brain mechanisms for action understanding rely on matching the observed actions into the viewer's motor system. Health professionals, who treat patients affected by movement disorders as dystonia, frequently see hyperkinetic action patterns characterized by an overflow of muscle co-contractions. To avert an overload of the motor system during observation of those actions, they might need to look at dystonic motor symptoms in a cool, detached way. To investigate whether visual expertise about atypical movement kinematics influences the viewer's motor system, we applied transcranial magnetic sti

Imitation learning for supervised autonomous tumor resection in central airway obstruction.

PURPOSE: Central airway obstruction (CAO) procedures require precise, repetitive dual-arm coordination under progressively degraded visibility from smoke and charring. Model-based control struggles with deformable-tissue variability and real-time constraints, while existing data-driven methods emphasize short, single-skill tasks rather than cyclic workflows. We investigate whether imitation learning can achieve fully autonomous task-level and high-level for CAO tumor resection on da Vinci Research Kit. METHODS: We propose a hierarchical framework combining low-level action chunking with trans

Limb Apraxias: The Influence of Higher Order Perceptual and Semantic Deficits in Motor Recovery After Stroke.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Limb apraxia is a group of higher order motor disorders associated with greater disability and dependence after stroke. Original neuropsychology studies distinguished separate brain pathways involved in perception and action, known as the dual stream hypothesis. This framework has allowed a better understanding of the deficits identified in Limb Apraxia. In this review, we propose a hierarchical organization of this disorder, in which a distinction can be made between several visuomotor pathways that lead to purposeful actions. Based on this,

A Data Driven Approach Reveals That Anomalous Motor System Connectivity is Associated With the Severity of Core Autism Symptoms.

This study examined whether disruptions in connectivity involving regions critical for learning, planning, and executing movements are relevant to core autism symptoms. Spatially constrained ICA was performed using resting-state fMRI from 419 children (autism spectrum disorder (ASD) = 105; typically developing (TD) = 314) to identify functional motor subdivisions. Comparing the spatial organization of each subdivision between groups, we found voxels that contributed significantly less to the right posterior cerebellar component in children with ASD versus TD (P <0.001). Next, we examined the e

Silencing circRNA protein kinase C iota (circ-PRKCI) suppresses cell progression and glycolysis of human papillary thyroid cancer through circ-PRKCI/miR-335/E2F3 ceRNA axis.

The circular RNA PRKCI (circ-PRKCI; ID: hsa_circ_0122683) is highly expressed in human papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) tumors according to GSE93522 dataset. However, its role in PTC tumorigenesis remains to be documented. Here, quantitative real-time PCR showed that expression of circ-PRKCI was abnormally upregulated in human PTC patients' tumors and cells, and higher circ-PRKCI might predict lymph node metastasis and recurrence. Functionally, cell behaviors were measured by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, colony formation assay, fluorescence-activated cell so
