Chondromyxoid fibroma with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst of the rib.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare, benign cartilaginous tumor, comprising less than 1% of primary bone tumors, and usually occurs in the metaphysis of a long tubular bone around the knee. We report a rare case of CMF of the rib. The patient was a 25-year-old man who visited the hospital for left upper back pain. Roentgenography revealed an 8-cm mass in the left upper lung field; computed tomography revealed a large multicystic tumor with aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC)-like features in the posterior mediastinum. ABCs are also a rare benign tumor representing 2.5% of primary bone tumors, and mos

Radiographic differentiation of enchondroma from low-grade chondrosarcoma in the fibula.

To evaluate demographic and radiographic features that may differentiate between enchondroma and low-grade chondrosarcoma of the fibula. The radiographs of ninety-three histologically-confirmed cartilaginous tumors of the fibula were retrospectively reviewed along with demographic information as to patient age and gender. Fifty-four enchondromas and thirty-nine low-grade chondrosarcomas were included in the study. Multiple previously-established radiographic features distinguishing enchondroma from chondrosarcoma were evaluated in each fibular tumor in a consensus manner by two experienced, bo

[Synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint--a differential diagnosis to parotid gland tumor].

Synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint is an uncommon disease of cartilaginous transformation of synovial membrane with formation of loose bodies within the joint space. The stimulus for synovial chondromatosis at this site is unknown. Symptoms frequently include pain and preauricular swelling with occasional snapping during jaw movements. Radiographs of the TMJ may be normal or show multiple, partially calcified loose bodies within the joint. Treatment consists of removal of the loose bodies together with all affected synovium. In this paper a case of synovial chondromatosis a

Benign tumors and tumorlike conditions of the spine. Radiological features, treatment, and results.

A series of 44 benign tumors and tumorlike conditions of the spine treated surgically between 1952 and 1982 is reported. We have focused on their radiodiagnosis, treatment, and long-term results. The radiologic features considered pathognomonic of skeletal tumors, and frequently found in tumors outside the spine, are less common in the spinal variety. In fact, the radiologic findings in spinal tumors are, as a rule, nonspecific. The long-term results in this series are considered satisfactory, despite two recurrences of a giant cell tumor and late malignant degeneration of an osteochondroma. T

Diagnostic thoracoscopy in pleuro-pulmonary infiltrates without pleural effusion.

In seven patients with pleuro-pulmonary infiltrates without pleural effusion, an artificial pneumothorax was induced, followed by diagnostic thoracoscopy, as the first and only invasive investigation; in all cases the diagnosis was confirmed by this simple procedure. The method has a low mortality correlated to other alternative diagnostic methods.

[Metachondromatosis. Report of a family with 4 cases].

Metachondromatosis is a hereditary dominant condition, which was differentiated from multiple hereditary cartilaginous exostoses by Maroteaux in 1971. We observed a family with 4 patients in 3 generations. The condition manifested in early childhood, showed a spontaneous regression after cessation of growth, and could be diagnosed with certainty by radiological signs. We found multiple tiny periarticular calcifications, small exostoses especially on the short tubular bones, and enchondromatous bone changes. The vertebral column takes part in the bone dysplasia. In addition, our patients show d

[Limitations in the opening of the mouth of an arthrogenic nature].

Mouth opening limitations of arthrogenous nature are subdivided according to a personal schedule into indirect and direct types. The former are brought on by occlusal alterations: these affect articular remodelling and may cause anatomical and functional changes of varying gravity in the temporo-mandibular joint with consequent limitations on opening movements. The latter are the consequence of various pathogenic agents (traumatic, neoplastic, inflammatory, degenerative) originating within the articular structures and developing therein, progressively limiting their function. Some significant

Multifocal supratentorial diffuse glioma in a young patient with Ollier disease.

Ollier disease is a rare disorder characterised by the development of multiple enchondromas in long bones. Here we present a 19-year-old man with Ollier disease who also developed three synchronous brain tumours. Craniotomy, biopsy and debulking was performed for one lesion followed by a period of observation, and 9 months later he underwent a second craniotomy and debulking for symptomatic progression. Histopathological examination revealed a diagnosis of multifocal diffuse glioma (World Health Organization grade II). This report highlights the increased incidence of primary brain tumours in

Chest wall hamartoma. Report of two cases with secondary aneurysmal bone cysts.

Chest wall hamartoma is a rare non-neoplastic benign lesion occurring in the neonatal period with particular clinical, radiological and pathological features. Histologically, it is composed of a mixture of bone trabeculae with spindle-cell stroma, chondroblast-like cells, and mature and immature hyaline cartilage. Aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign lesion that may arise secondary to several bone processes, such as giant cell tumor, chondrosarcoma, non-ossifying fibroma or osteosarcoma. We present two new cases of chest wall hamartoma with secondary aneurysmatic bone cyst formation studied with h

Arthroscopic treatment of synovial chondromatosis of the knee.

Between 1971 and 1987, arthroscopy was performed in 39 patients with synovial chondromatosis of the knee; 29 of these patients (32 knees) were followed an average of 3.5 years. A good result was obtained in 78% of the cases. Removal of loose bodies was the only treatment in 31 of the 32 knees. A synovectomy was performed in one case. No synovectomies were performed secondarily. Only three patients required a second arthroscopic procedure. The essential prognostic factor for a good functional result is the condition of the femorotibial cartilage. We concluded that simple arthroscopic removal of

[Computed tomography of primary bone tumors in children].

The diagnostic value of CT examination in 21 children with 14 malignant and 7 benign bone neoplasias was evaluated. CT contributed in 72%; mainly in malignant conditions it was superior to other diagnostic techniques and demonstrated the exact intra- as well as the extraosseous extension. The cross sectional display facilitated evaluation of complex anatomic structures. Monitoring the treatment was easily performed by CT follow-up studies. However, 28% of all the examinations were not contributary, this group mainly including benign lesions.

[The hand as an indicator for the diagnostic orientation in various systemic diseases involving the bones].

Radiological aspects of the hand are presented and discussed in connection with some of the more common systemic diseases involving the bones, in which the hand is an ideal diagnostic indicator. Suitable X-ray techniques and xeroradiography are used to identify alterations to the periostium, the bone cortex and marrow and the soft tissues. The different diseases were classified according to the part of the hand involved: a) distal extremities; b) proximal phalanges and metacarpals; c) entire hand; d) wrist area.

This paper discussed fractures in defective or deformed bones, in stiff, wasted or anaesthetic limbs and at the ends of metal implants. Suggestions are made as to how treatment should be modified in these situations.
