We report a case of corneal decompensation caused by recurrent herpetic endotheliitis that was treated successfully with Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). A 62-year-old woman presented with a history of recurrent herpetic infections in the right cornea. After topical and systemic treatment with antivirals and steroids for 5 months, DMEK combined with cataract surgery was performed. Two weeks after DMEK, the corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) in the affected eye was 0.3 (20/60). One year postoperatively, the CDVA was 1.0 (20/20) and the slitlamp biomicroscopy showed no sig

PURPOSE: To detect changes in retinal perfusion and macular thickness using fluorescein angiography and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) before and after implantation of a Calhoun light-adjustable intraocular lens (Calhoun Vision, Pasadena, CA) and application of profiled doses of ultraviolet light for postoperative refractive adjustments.
METHODS: This prospective trial of non-consecutive cases comprised 125 eyes of 125 patients who had cataract surgery and light-adjustable intraocular lens implantation. OCT examinations were performed preoperatively and postoperatively bef

PURPOSE: To investigate the surgical outcomes, complications and postoperative progression in HIV patients undergoing cataract surgery in a teaching hospital.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients with HIV/AIDS who had cataract surgery from January 2000 until December 2011 at a tertiary referral multidisciplinary hospital in Singapore.
RESULTS: We identified 44 eyes from 29 patients. Preoperatively, 41.3% had no ophthalmic manifestations of HIV/AIDS, while 16 eyes had quiescent cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR). Postoperatively, 1 eye developed new CMVR, while 1 eye had reactivati

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of a large capsulorhexis and intraocular lens (IOL) in obtaining a larger anterior capsule opening after cataract surgery in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM).
SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, University of Fukui, Fukui, Japan.
DESIGN: Prospective clinical trial.
METHODS: Patients with DM had bilateral cataract surgery with a 2.8 or 3.0 mm scleral incision, a capsulorhexis with a diameter of approximately 5.0 or 6.0 mm, and implantation of a 6.0 mm optic (Eternity X-60) or 7.0 mm optic (Eternity X-70) IOL. The anterior capsule opening area, aqueous

Three patients at our institution developed corneal infections associated with sutures placed after clear corneal incision cataract surgery. The time to infection was 9 weeks, 22 months, and 33 months. One patient required injection of intravitreal antibiotic agents for presumed endophthalmitis associated with the corneal infection. Two patients were treated with topical fortified antibiotic eyedrops only. Although there was no significant change in visual acuity after resolution of the infection, morbidity from suture-related corneal infections can be significant. Routine suture removal in th

PURPOSE: To report the results of cataract surgery after previous implantation of an Artisan iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) for the correction of myopia.
SETTING: University center and private practice.
METHODS: This study comprised eyes with previous implantation of an iris-fixated pIOL to correct myopia and subsequent pIOL explantation combined with cataract surgery and in-the-bag implantation of a posterior chamber IOL. Predictability of refractive results, changes in endothelial cell density (ECD), and postoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were analyzed.
RESULTS

PURPOSE: To determine factors affecting the outcome of phacoviscocanalostomy in patients with cataract and primary open-angle glaucoma.
METHODS: Factors for controlling intraocular pressure (IOP) were investigated in 180 patients using Cox multivariate proportional hazards survival regression.
RESULTS: The mean preoperative IOP of 20.2+/-3.8 mm Hg decreased significantly (P<0.0001) to 15.3+/-2.6 mm Hg for 5 years postoperatively. The success probabilities defined as an IOP of 17 mm Hg or less or a 20% or greater reduction were 47.2% with or without medications and 31.4% without medications a

Our aim was to investigate the effects of two alpha(1)-adrenergic blockers-tamsulosin and alfuzosin-on pupil diameter (PD). In this prospective randomized single-blind clinical trial, 64 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia received treatment with either tamsulosin or alfuzosin. The same ophthalmologist, masked to the given medication, evaluated patients prior to, 4 weeks after and 6 months after the start of the medication (day 0, day 28 and month 6). Best corrected visual acuity and PD under mesopic, scotopic, and dilated conditions were measured. t-test, ANOVA, and Dunnett's multiple

PURPOSE: To evaluate the factors influencing AcrySof intraocular lens (IOL) (Alcon Laboratories) movement and near visual acuity after cyclopentolate 1% and pilocarpine 2%.
SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, University of Ankara, Ankara, Turkey.
METHODS: Thirty eyes of 22 patients with AcrySof IOL implantation were included in this prospective study. Near visual acuity (Jaeger) at 35 cm through best distance correction without an add and pupil diameter were measured and correlated with anterior chamber depth (ACD) measured with ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) after application of cyclopent

METHODS: This was a case-control study that enrolled a total of 17 HCV antibody-positive cataract patients and 17 HCV antibody-negative cataract patients. Aqueous humor samples were collected during cataract surgery, and 40 cytokines were detected and analyzed. The intraoperative pain levels were evaluated using three subjective questionnaires consistin

BACKGROUND: Transient corneal edema is one of the most common complications observed after cataract surgery. If the center of the cornea is involved, it may result in impaired visual acuity in the immediate postoperative period. Hence, it concerns both the surgeon and the patient. Descemet's membrane detachment (DMD) is a less recognized cause of immediate corneal edema that can lead to long-term endothelial failure. Immediate recognition and surgical management may preserve vision in these patients.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the proportion of corneal edema in subjects undergoing manual minor
