Long-Term Postoperative Outcomes Following Cionni Ring and In-the-Bag Intraocular Lens Implantation in Eyes With Subluxated Lenses.

PURPOSE: Evaluate long-term outcomes following Cionni modified capsule tension ring (MCTR) and in-the-bag intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in subluxated lenses. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Forty-one eyes of 31 patients from Raghudeep Eye Hospital, India, with subluxated lenses who had completed a minimum of 5 years' postoperative follow-up were included. Lens extraction, capsular bag fixation with MCTR using 9-0 polypropylene suture, and in-the-bag IOL implantation were performed in all eyes. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), IOL centration, posterior capsule opacif

Effect of Capsular Tension Ring Implantation on Postoperative Rotational Stability of a Toric Intraocular Lens.

PURPOSE: To analyze clinical outcomes of cataract surgery with implantation of a toric intraocular lens (IOL) and to evaluate the effect of capsular tension ring (CTR) presence or absence on the rotational stability of implanted IOLs and postoperative refraction. METHODS: This cohort study included 64 eyes of 41 patients who underwent uneventful cataract surgery with implantation of a toric IOL (enVista toric MX60T; Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY) to correct preoperative corneal astigmatism. In 30 eyes, a CTR (11 SR model; Videris s.r.o., Prague, Czech Republic) was co-implanted. Analyzed param

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to Assess the Neurobehavioral Impact of Dysphotopsia with Multifocal Intraocular Lenses.

PURPOSE: To investigate the association between dysphotopsia and neural responses in visual and higher-level cortical regions in patients who recently received multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implants. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty patients 3 to 4 weeks after bilateral cataract surgery with diffractive IOL implantation and 15 age- and gender-matched control subjects. Objective quantification of posterior capsule opacification after cataract surgery, with optical coherence tomography.

PURPOSE: To evaluate posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in humans after cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, by using optical coherence tomography (OCT-1). METHODS: Sixty-six eyes with PCO and 20 eyes with a normal posterior capsule were analyzed. A 3-mm-long horizontal scan of the posterior capsule was obtained. Measurements at three points and their average were recorded. Intraoperator and interoperator reliabilities were assessed. Investigated was peak intensity (PI) and posterior capsule thickening (PCT), with PCT indicating the distance between two reflectivity s

Fungal endophthalmitis caused by Paecilomyces variotii following cataract surgery: a presumed operating room air-conditioning system contamination.

PURPOSE: To report a case of delayed fungal endophthalmitis by Paecilomyces variotii following uncomplicated cataract surgery. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of postoperative endophthalmitis by this species. METHODS: We report the longterm clinical follow-up of an 83-year-old female who underwent uncomplicated sutureless, small-incision cataract surgery. She developed recurring uveitis 4 months after surgery. Vitreous tap and finally complete vitrectomy with removal of the capsular bag including the intraocular lens were performed. Fungi were studied by histopathology and cu

Optical Coherence Tomography Predictors of Anatomical and Functional Recovery After Macular Hole Surgery.

PURPOSE: To examine whether preoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT)-derived macular hole parameters and postoperative outer retinal restoration are associated with anatomical closure and visual recovery after macular hole surgery and to determine whether preoperative geometry and preoperative symptom duration predict different outcome domains. METHODS: This retrospective study included 48 eyes of 45 patients who underwent surgery for macular hole between January 1, 2013, and August 1, 2019, and completed at least 6 months of follow-up. Surgery consisted of 23-gauge pars plana vitrecto

Discrepancy Between Chargemaster Prices and Hospital Quality for Cataract Surgery.

Background The United States continues to rank as one of the most expensive healthcare systems in the world, and cataract surgery, the most commonly performed surgery, is one of the primary drivers of healthcare expenditure. Increasing efforts have been made to try to minimize U.S. healthcare spending, such as the 2018 Executive Order requiring hospitals to publish a machine-readable list, a chargemaster, of prices for all offered procedures to increase price transparency and reduce healthcare spending. Given cataract surgery is highly standardized with predictable costs, the goal of this stud

[The Science of Glaucoma Surgery -Filtration Surgery and the Role of Cytokines].

Glaucoma surgery is classified into a number of areas: intra-ocular drainage, filtration surgery and cyclo-coagulation. Although filtration surgery is the most effective way to lower intraocular pressure (IOP), no surgical technique manages to result in fulfills complete efficacy and safety. Trabeculectomy, one type of filtration surgery, is a common surgical procedure for glaucoma. Though trabeculectomy is fairly effective in lowering intraocular pressure, it is not rare that refractive errors remain or the patients suffer from severe surgical complications. Thus, surgical results of glaucoma

Impact of intraocular lens decentration and tilt on higher-order aberrations in patients with high and super-high myopia following cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: To evaluate how intraocular lens (IOL) positioning affects visual quality in patients with high myopia after cataract surgery. METHODS: This prospective, randomized study was conducted on 50 eyes from 50 patients with high myopia (axial length [AL] >26 mm) or super-high myopia (AL >30 mm) who underwent cataract surgery between October 2022 and October 2023. We assessed the IOL position using optical coherence tomography and measured higher-order aberrations (HOAs) with the iTrace system. Correlations between IOL positioning and visual quality markers were then examined. RESULTS: Fol
