Secondary synovial osteochondromatosis (SOC) is a rare disorder caused by a variety of joint disorders. Two unusual cases of secondary SOC are presented. The first patient is a 43-year-old man with extensive SOC developing within a bursa surrounding an osteochondroma of the pubic bone. The second patient is a 23-year-old man who developed florid and progressive SOC of his hip joint following excision of a femoral neck osteochondroma. SOC recurred despite three excisions over a 15-month period. Imaging was useful in pre-operative diagnosis of bursal SOC in the first patient and in detecting mul

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to analyze MRI findings associated with posterior decentering of the humeral head on shoulder MR arthrogram.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 255 MR arthrograms were obtained during a 10-month period. MR arthrograms in patients with posterior decentering of the humeral head (n = 33) were reviewed and compared with those of randomly selected control group without posterior decentering (n = 66). MR arthrograms were retrospectively evaluated by two observers for posterior factors (posterior synovial proliferation, posterior capsular thickening, and poster

Impingement syndrome is usually caused by encroachment on the rotator cuff of the acromion, coracoacromial ligament, acromioclavicular joint or coracoid process. Bursal causes of impingement are rare but include rheumatoid thickening, and thickening from previous and iatrogenic causes such as sutures, pins, or wires left from previous surgery. We report a case of synovial osteochondromatosis presenting as chronic impingement syndrome. Synovial osteochondromatosis may be difficult to differentiate from chronic calcific tendinitis, but we describe a radiological sign and its anatomical basis tha

We describe a 5-year-old girl with features resembling Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome, type I (sparse scalp hair, bushy eyebrows, bulbous nose, long philtrum, cone-shaped epiphyses, clinobrachydactyly, epiphyseal changes in the femoral head and short stature), and appendicular exostoses similar to trichorhinophalangeal syndrome, type II. However, despite physical resemblance to the trichorhinophalangeal syndrome variants, cytological analysis showed a structurally normal chromosome 8 and no mental deficiency was apparent. In addition, morphological congruities between multiple exostoses and me

Benign neoplasms and tumor-like lesions constitute the majority of soft tissue masses in the foot and ankle. Therefore, malignant tumors are often unsuspected at this site and misdiagnosed clinically, especially if occurring in young individuals with unspecific or long-standing clinical symptoms. In addition to radiography, MR imaging represents the method of choice in evaluation of foot tumors. Because of their relatively characteristic imaging appearance, in most cases of benign soft tissue lesions of the foot and ankle a specific diagnosis can be suggested. Unfortunately, malignant tumors c

OBJECTIVES: To define the characteristics of synovial osteochondromatosis of the hand and wrist.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of 21 patients, including 11 with intraarticular and 10 with tenosynovial disease. Cases secondary to degenerative joint disease were excluded. Surgery consisted in removal of the osteocartilaginous bodies and of the adjacent synovial membrane. Mean follow-up was seven years (range, three to 18 years). The relevant literature was reviewed in part.
RESULTS: Recurrence was seen in four patients and was multiple in two of these four. Most recurrences occurre

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a benign bone tumor. However, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish this tumor from chondrosarcoma. We report a rare case arising from the proximal fibula, presenting multimodality imaging features. An 18-year-old man presented with a 2-year history of gradually increasing pain and swelling in his left knee. Radiograph showed an area of osteolysis with lobulation. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated that almost the whole lesion was enhanced with Gd-DTPA. Scintigraphy examination with (99m)Tc-biphosphonate showed strong accumulation in the periphery. O

Subchondral cystic lesions are common features that are associated with many arthropathies and synovial-based processes. Although not comprehensive in scope, this article correlated the pathophysiology and imaging features of several of these disorders to better understand the associated subchondral lucencies. The imaging features of these subchondral cystic lesions were described in each process, and, in some cases, demonstrated overlapping features. By becoming familiar with the disease processes and recognizing the imaging appearances and associated clinical findings, the radiologist will b

OBJECTIVE: To increase awareness of temporomandibular joint and mandibular disease in the overall evaluation and diagnosis of the parotid mass.
STUDY DESIGN: We describe clinical presentations of pigmented villonodular synovitis and synovial chondrocalcinosis of the temporomandibular joint, as well as osteoma of the mandible, as they may initially suggest primary neoplasms of the parotid gland.
CONCLUSIONS: Preauricular swelling is a common presenting symptom for patients visiting an otolaryngologist. Often this symptom is suggestive of a parotid mass. However, lesions of the temporomandibul

BACKGROUND: Intracranially extending temporomandibular joint (TMJ) lesions may be radiologically misinterpreted as primary intracranial or skull base pathologies, leading to diagnostic delays or inappropriate management.
PURPOSE: This systematic review aimed to characterize the clinical and imaging features of such TMJ lesions and evaluate the impact of radiologic misclassification. We also aimed to develop a diagnostic framework for when to consider an intracranially extending TMJ lesion, based on clinical and radiologic features.

Background: Gardner syndrome is a rare genetic cancer predisposition disorder characterized by intestinal polyposis, multiple osteomas, and soft and hard tissue tumors. Dental anomalies are present in approximately 30%-70% of patients with Gardner syndrome and can be discovered during routine dental examinations. However, sometimes the diagnosis is challenging due to the high clinical variability and incomplete clinical picture. Herein, we report a family with various dental and bone anomalies, in which the definitive diagnosis was established with the help of a comprehensive genetic analysis

BACKGROUND: "Rice body" describes the gross appearance of hyperplastic synovial villi that develop into rice-like fibrinous loose bodies. Rice bodies have historically been associated with tuberculosis and inflammatory arthritis, but no retrospective studies have correlated their magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances to histology or to the underlying diagnoses.
PURPOSE: We sought to correlate the appearance on MRI of rice body-like particles with histology and describe the associated diagnoses.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of MRI reports in our instituti

Nodular fasciitis is a benign myofibroblastic proliferation with a predilection for the subcutaneous tissues of the upper extremities, trunk, and head and neck of young adults. Nodular fasciitis is not generally recognized to arise within joints. In this study, the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of 10 cases of intraarticular nodular fasciitis are described. Six patients were female and 4 were male, with a median age of 33 years (range, 9-50 years). Lesional size ranged from 2 to 4 cm (median, 2.6 cm). Seven tumors arose in the knee, 2 in the hand, and 1 in the ankle. Most p

Loss of PTPN11/SHP2 in mice or in human metachondromatosis (MC) patients causes benign cartilage tumors on the bone surface (exostoses) and within bones (enchondromas). To elucidate the mechanisms underlying cartilage tumor formation, we investigated the role of SHP2 in the specification, maturation and organization of chondrocytes. Firstly, we studied chondrocyte maturation by performing RNA-seq on primary chondrocyte pellet cultures. We found that SHP2 depletion, or inhibition of the ERK1/2 pathway, delays the terminal differentiation of chondrocytes from the early-hypertrophic to the late-h

Primary bone and soft-tissue tumors that mimic common sports injuries are relatively rare and are not often encountered by most orthopaedists. Prompt and accurate diagnosis of these tumors is crucial to maximize the clinical outcome. Many bone and soft-tissue tumors present disproportionately in young and active patients who are often involved in athletic activities. Thus, the clinician may misdiagnose these rare tumors as more common sports injuries. Symptoms that should raise suspicion for a neoplastic process include pain unrelated to activity and a clinical course that does not follow the

This paper represents a general review of basic age-related changes that take place in the craniomandibular apparatus and the most frequently presenting conditions associated with craniomandibular disorders (CMD) in the elderly. The evaluation of geriatric patients with signs or symptoms of CMD must consider (1) normal age-related changes in the craniomandibular apparatus and their impact on both normal function and responses to stress; (2) the role of dentition status and dental prosthesis in CMD; and (3) the contribution of malignant disease, psoriasis, arthritic conditions, pseudogout, gran

Arthroscopy of the hip joint has developed into a useful tool for the hip surgeon. Hip joint anatomy, however, makes special demands of the arthroscopist. He needs to be familiar with the arthroscopic anatomy of the hip and its variations. Moreover, he should have practical training in the technique of hip arthroscopy prior to his first intraoperative experience in order to avoid complications. A complete arthroscopic inspection of the hip can be achieved by using a combined procedure: whereas the central hip compartment can be scoped only by distraction of the joint, the periphery can be bett
