Parent, sibling and peer influences on smoking initiation, regular smoking and nicotine dependence. Results from a genetically informative design.

We sought to determine whether parenting, sibling and peer influences are associated with offspring ever smoking, regular smoking and nicotine dependence (ND) after controlling for familial factors. We used a twin-family design and data from structured diagnostic surveys of 1919 biological offspring (ages 12-32 years), 1107 twin fathers, and 1023 mothers. Offspring were classified into one of four familial risk groups based on twin fathers' and their co-twins' history of DSM-III-R nicotine dependence. Multivariate multinomial logistic regression was used to model familial risk, paternal and ma

Bilineal transmission in Tourette's syndrome families.

We assessed the frequency of bilineal (from maternal and paternal sides) transmission of Tourette's syndrome (TS) in two groups of pedigrees: (1) 39 high-density families in which five or more relatives were reported to have TS, and (2) the families of 39 consecutively ascertained probands referred for evaluation of TS. We used two designations for the TS phenotype (tics, tics or obsessive-compulsive behavior [OCB]), and we attempted to verify bilineal transmission with direct examinations. For the high-density pedigrees, bilineal transmission was evident in 33% (considering tics) and 41% (con

Pre-pubertal exposure to ibuprofen impairs sperm parameters in male adult rats and compromises the next generation.

Ibuprofen is one of the most commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs in pediatric practice. This drug inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme, reducing the production of prostaglandin, an important mediator on male reproductive function. We examined if pre-pubertal treatment with ibuprofen in male rats can affect the reproductive parameters of these animals in adult life and on their descendants. Male rats (23 days old) received ibuprofen (0; 2.4; 7.2 or 14.3 mg/kg/day), per gavage, from postnatal day (PND) 23 to 53. At sexual maturity, treated males were placed with untreated females for obtai

Preschool irritability predicts child psychopathology, functional impairment, and service use at age nine.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the predictive validity and clinical significance of chronic irritability during early childhood. This prospective, longitudinal study examined associations of preschool chronic irritability with psychiatric disorders, functional impairment, and service use at age nine in a large community sample. METHODS: Four hundred and forty-six children were assessed at age three and again at age nine. Child psychopathology and functional impairment were assessed at age three with the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment (PAPA) with parents and at age nine with the Kiddi

Father absence and reproduction-related outcomes in Malaysia, a transitional fertility population.

Father absence is consistently associated with children's reproductive outcomes in industrialized countries. It has been suggested that father absence acts as a cue to particular environmental conditions that influence life history strategies. Much less is known, however, about the effects of father absence on such outcomes in lower-income countries. Using data from the 1988 Malaysian Family Life Survey (n = 567), we tested the effect of father absence on daughters' age at menarche, first marriage, and first birth; parity progression rates; and desired completed family size in Malaysia, a coun

The impact of HIV/AIDS on children's educational outcome: a critical review of global literature.

The number of children losing one or both parents to HIV/AIDS has continued to rise in the past decade, with most of them being school-aged children. This study reviews global literature on the effects of HIV/AIDS (e.g., parental HIV-related illness or death) on children's schooling. Systematic review procedures generated 23 studies for examination. Existing studies show educational disadvantages among children affected by AIDS in various educational outcomes, including school enrollment and attendance, school behavior and performance, school completion, and educational attainment. A number of

Severe hyperhomocysteinemia due to MTHFR deficiency caused by a new mutation: A case report and literature review.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder caused by mutations in the MTHFR gene, leading to a variety of clinical manifestations. In October 2022, the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University admitted a 21-year-old male patient with neuropsychiatric disorders, presenting primarily with cognitive decline, limb tremors, abnormal mental and behavioral symptoms, seizures, and gait disturbances. These symptoms had gradually developed over 5 years, worsening significantly in the past year. The patient's plasma homocysteine levels

Missing the pathological expansion in Huntington disease: de novo c.51C>G variant on the expanded allele causing intrafamilial allele dropout.

Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by motor, behavioral, and cognitive symptoms, caused by the pathological expansion of more than 35 CAG/CAA repeats in the HTT gene. We describe the phenotype of a patient compatible with HD. Several family members were reported as affected, and a paternal cousin and his daughter carried 39 and 42 CAG/CAA. HD genetic testing in proband showed homozygosity for a 14 CAG/CAA allele. Considering the phenotype and family history, HTT gene sequence was performed, revealing heterozygosity for the c.51C>G variant that changes the la

Analysis of potential factors allowing coexistence in a sexual/asexual minnow complex.

The northern redbelly dace (Chrosomus eos) and the finescale dace (C. neogaeus) have hybridized to produce an all-female, asexual hybrid (C. eos-neogaeus) that reproduces by sperm-limited parthenogenesis (gynogenesis). However, in this system, gynogenesis is not 100 % efficient; triploid females are occasionally formed which reproduce as sexuals, producing nuclear males and females of the paternal species (generally C. eos). Thus, the asexual lineage continually produces occasional males that can serve as a sperm source. Because (almost) all hybrid offspring are females, the hybrid population

Cortical activation deficits during facial emotion processing in youth at high risk for the development of substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Recent longitudinal studies demonstrate that addiction risk may be influenced by a cognitive, affective and behavioral phenotype that emerges during childhood. Relatively little research has focused on the affective or emotional risk components of this high-risk phenotype, including the relevant neurobiology. METHODS: Non-substance abusing youth (N=19; mean age=12.2) with externalizing psychopathology and paternal history of a substance use disorder and demographically matched healthy comparisons (N=18; mean age=11.9) were tested on a facial emotion matching task during functional

Autism in Angelman syndrome: implications for autism research.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by severe mental retardation, ataxia, and a happy/sociable disposition. Maternally, but not paternally, derived defects, such as duplications, within the AS critical region result in autistic symptomatology, suggesting that the UBE3A gene might be implicated in the causation of autism. This study examined the prevalence of autism in AS in 19 children representing three known molecular classes of AS. Children were studied over the course of 1 year. Forty-two percent of this population, eight of 19 children, met criteria for a

Parental history and early-onset type 2 diabetes in African Americans and Latinos in Chicago.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of parental diabetes mellitus (DM) in the development of type 2 DM among children and adolescents from high-risk ethnic groups. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based dataset of insulin-treated diabetes among African American and Latino children <18 years old yielded 243 cases who completed an interview. A subset with features of type 2 DM was identified (n = 44) using one or more criteria: stopping insulin therapy; using oral hypoglycemic agents; acanthosis nigricans; polycystic ovary syndrome; denoted "atypical" or "type 2" by a physician. RESULTS: Of all the patie

Parental Coping, Affective Symptoms, and Affective Reactions to Parenting Stress in Parents of Adolescents During COVID-19.

It is important to improve understanding of how parenting stress and coping strategies may be associated. Various coping strategies have been associated with different psychosocial outcomes, including anxiety and depression. Gender differences in coping between women and men may contribute to women reporting higher levels of psychological distress, depression, and anxiety. However, there is a lack of research on gender differences in stress responses and coping behaviors among parents in response to the stress of parenting adolescents, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current stu

A 14-year-old male patient with diagnosis of Prader-Willi syndrome in Ethiopia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome is a complex multisystem disorder due to the absent expression of paternally active genes in the Prader-Willi syndrome-critical region on chromosome 15 (15q11.2-q13). The main clinical features are hyperphagia (which frequently results in early-onset obesity), hypogonadism, developmental delays, typical behaviors (such as obsessive-compulsive tendencies, tantrums, perseveration, insistence on sameness, and rigidity), and distinctive facial features. In infants, the most prominent findings are hypotonia and feeding difficulties. CASE PRESENTATION: This paper h

Getting under the skin: Physiological stress and witnessing paternal arrest in young children with incarcerated fathers.

U.S. jails see nearly 11 million annual admissions, rates that disproportionately affect men of color-more than half of whom are fathers. An estimated 7% of U.S. children experience the incarceration of a parent, increasing their risk for poor developmental and health outcomes. Although stress processes are often suggested as an underlying mechanism linking paternal incarceration to child well-being, few studies have examined such links. To study how witnessing a father's arrest prior to incarceration in jail relates to children's stress processes, we collected data on 123 individuals from 41
