Physicochemical and remineralisation properties of calcium silicate and glass ionomer cements applied in simulated caries-affected dentine.

Calcium silicate-based and glass ionomer cements are often used in caries-affected dentine. This study investigated the remineralising and physicochemical properties of two calcium silicates and a glass ionomer cement. Human molars with Class I cavities were subjected to pH cycling to simulate caries lesions. These were restored using two different calcium silicate cements (CTR-MTA or MTA-VOCO) or a glass ionomer cement (GIC). After storage in artificial saliva, Knoop microhardness (KHN) was measured within a 300-µm zone from the interface. Solubility, pH, calcium ion release, scanning electro

DMP1-derived peptides promote remineralization of human dentin.

Remineralization of dentin during dental caries is of considerable clinical interest. Dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) is a non-collagenous calcium-binding protein that plays a critical role in biomineralization. In the present study, we tested if peptides derived from DMP1 can be used for dentin remineralization. Peptide pA (pA, MW = 1.726 kDa) and peptide pB (pB, MW = 2.185), containing common collagen-binding domains and unique calcium-binding domains, were synthesized by solid-phase chemistry. An extreme caries lesion scenario was created by collagenase digestion, and the biomineral-nucleati

Evaluation of a new dentifrice for the treatment of sensitive teeth.

A dentifrice containing 5% potassium nitrate, 1.3% soluble pyrophosphate, 1.5% polyvinylmethyl ether and maleic acid (PVM/MA) copolymer and 0.243% sodium fluoride in a silica base (Sensitive/Tartar Control) has been developed to concomitantly control tartar, caries and dentinal hypersensitivity. In vitro and animal studies show that the fluoride in this product effectively inhibits formation of enamel and dentine caries. In vitro studies also demonstrate that this dentifrice effectively reduces hydraulic conductance by occluding dentine tubules with a mixed surface deposit of copolymer and sil

Prevalence of white spot lesions in children and adolescents across Northern, Central and Southern Italy: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of carious lesions allows the implementation of remineralization strategies, combined with improved at-home oral hygiene and dietary modifications, to reverse the demineralization process and prevent progression to cavitation. In recent years, the prevalence of white spot lesions (WSLs) in pediatric populations has increased, highlighting the importance of their monitoring. OBJECTIVE: The present multicenter cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of WSLs (ICDAS-II codes 1-2) among children and adolescents in northern (Trieste), central (Rome), an

Comparative Evaluation of Bleaching Efficacy on White Spot Lesions Managed With Resin Infiltration and Remineralization Using Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate: An In Vitro Dynamic pH Cycling Study.

BACKGROUND: Bleaching is often desired by patients, but with white spot lesions (WSLs), this procedure can be a cause of concern due to its action on demineralized enamel. Treating these WSLs before bleaching can be a treatment modality to alleviate the action of the bleaching agent. This study assessed the efficacy of a 40% hydrogen peroxide bleaching agent on demineralized enamel pre-treated with resin infiltration (RI) or casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) using a dynamic pH cycling model to simulate oral conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-six human molar ena

Analysis of pulpal reactions to restorative procedures, materials, pulp capping, and future therapies.

Every year, despite the effectiveness of preventive dentistry and dental health care, 290 million fillings are placed each year in the United States; two-thirds of these involve the replacement of failed restorations. Improvements in the success of restorative treatments may be possible if caries management strategies, selection of restorative materials, and their proper use to avoid post-operative complications were investigated from a biological perspective. Consequently, this review will examine pulp injury and healing reactions to different restorative variables. The application of tissue

The Caries Management System: an evidence-based preventive strategy for dental practitioners. Application for adults.

In the absence of effective caries preventive methods, operative care became established as the means for caries control in general practice. Water fluoridation resulted in a declining caries incidence which decreased further following the advent of fluoridated toothpaste. The challenge today is to develop a non-invasive model of practice that will sustain a low level of primary caries experience in the younger generation and reduce risk of caries experience in the older generations. The Caries Management System is a ten step non-invasive strategy to arrest and remineralize early lesions. The
