[Surgery of benign tumors of the anterior base of the skull].

Our surgical techniques for the complete removal of large tumours of the anterior skull base are described. Neurosurgeon and otolaryngologist should perform this surgery together. However, only in few cases a combined transfrontal and subfrontal approach is indicated. In cases where the sinuses of both sides are involved the approach of Schloffer offers some advantages in combination with modern techniques of reconstruction. Special attention is directed to the reconstruction of large defects of the skull base with ceramics (e.g. highly pure aluminium-oxide-ceramic, porous tricalciumphosphate

Chondroid Synoviocytic Neoplasm: A Clinicopathologic, Immunohistochemical, and Molecular Genetic Study of a Distinctive Tumor of Synoviocytes.

Tumors resembling tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT) but additionally forming chondroid matrix are rare and most often involve the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). We studied 21 tumors consisting of synoviocytes (large, eosinophilic mononuclear cells containing hemosiderin) and chondroid matrix to better understand these unusual neoplasms. The tumors occurred in 10 males and 11 females, in the age group of 31 to 80 years (median, 50 years) and involved the TMJ region (16), extremities (4), and spine (1). As in conventional TGCT, all were composed of synoviocytes, small histiocytes, foamy macro

Fgfr3 mutation disrupts chondrogenesis and bone ossification in zebrafish model mimicking CATSHL syndrome partially via enhanced Wnt/β-catenin signaling.

CATSHL syndrome, characterized by camptodactyly, tall stature and hearing loss, is caused by loss-of-function mutations of fibroblast growth factor receptors 3 (FGFR3) gene. Most manifestations of patients with CATSHL syndrome start to develop in the embryonic stage, such as skeletal overgrowth, craniofacial abnormalities, however, the pathogenesis of these phenotypes especially the early maldevelopment remains incompletely understood. Furthermore, there are no effective therapeutic targets for this skeleton dysplasia. Methods: We generated fgfr3 knockout zebrafish by CRISPR/Cas9 technology to

[Benign tumours and tumour-like lesions of the bone : General treatment principles].

BACKGROUND: Benign bone lesions are much more common than malignant lesions. Some benign bone tumors have a characteristic and typical radiographic appearance, while others are more challenging. Therapy of benign bone tumors differs greatly. While the majority of benign bone tumors do not require surgical therapy, other specific lesions, e. g. aneurysmal bone cysts or giant cell tumors (GCT) of the bone require surgery due to their locally aggressive behavior. DIAGNOSTICS: The major challenge for the radiologist and/or pathologist is the differentiation between a benign and low-grade malignan

Enchondroma of the nasal septum due to Ollier disease: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Morbus Ollier is characterized by the presence of multiple enchondromas (ie, benign intraosseous cartilaginous lesions). Although their manifestation in the limb bones is well described, only a few cases with ear, nose, and throat (ENT) involvement, primarily arising from the skull, have been reported. The malignant transformation toward slowly growing low-grade chondrosarcomas is the most severe form of progression. METHODS: We report a unique case of a 54-year-old patient with Ollier disease with an extensive nasal enchondroma apparently eroding the middle nasal concha and expan

Enchondroma of the distal phalanx of the hand.

We saw five patients who had enchondroma of the distal phalanx, a relatively uncommon site for that lesion. Three patients had pain secondary to a pathological fracture and were managed with curettage and bone-grafting through a palmar longitudinal incision. The other two patients had severe deformities of the fingertip and nail. One was managed with disarticulation of the distal interphalangeal joint and the other, with curettage and grafting through a dorsal approach followed by reconstruction of the nail matrix. We believe that the palmar incision in the pulp of the finger has few, if any,

The use of corundum ceramic implants after excision of tumours of the extremities.

Implants of corundum ceramic have been used in the treatment of 38 patients with bony tumours of the limbs. Data are presented concerning the replacement with ceramic implants of the joint ends and diaphyseal defects of long bones, as well as in various bones of the hand and foot. Experiments carried out over a long period have shown that corundum ceramic is a strong material and is biologically inert.

Aneurysmal bone cysts with emphasis on roentgenologic diagnosis.

This paper was written to bring about an awareness of aneurysmal bone cysts--the etiology, signs and symptoms, and clinical manifestations. Emphasis is placed upon the roentgenologic appearance of bone tumors and the differentiation of aneurysmal cysts from other relatively common bone tumors. Treatment and pathologic interpretation are discussed briefly.

Hyperplasia of the mandibular condyle. A historical review of important early cases with a presentation and analysis of twelve patients.

Thirteen patients with condylar hyperplasia have been examined and twelve operated upon in a nine year period ending December 1979. A further eight patients with facial asymmetry, considered to be the sequelae of condylar hyperplasia, had extra condylar osteotomies carried out. As no specimens are available for histopathological examination, they have been excluded from the series. There appears to be a similarity between the histological findings of osteochondromata of the mandibular condyle and coronoid processes, active condylar hyperplasia and the changes noticed in the region of the costo

A rare benign chondroid tumor of the main pulmonary artery.

BackgroundPrimary tumors of the pulmonary artery are rare and frequently misdiagnosed as thromboembolic disease. Benign chondroid tumors arising from this location are exceptionally uncommon.Case DescriptionA 23-year-old man presented with exertional dyspnea and syncope. Imaging revealed a well-defined mass occupying the main pulmonary artery. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography showed no metabolic activity. The mass was completely excised under cardiopulmonary bypass. Histopathological examination demonstrated mature hyaline cartilage with low proliferative activity, consistent w

Thorahcic SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumors with ganglioneuroma and enchondroma: implications for SLC7A11 and ARID1A expression: a case report.

BACKGROUND: SWI/SNF-related, matrix-associated, actin-dependent regulator of chromatin, subfamily A, member 4-deficient thoracic sarcoma (SMARCA4-DTS) is a rare disease that has recently been described as an entity. It is characterized by an aggressive clinical course and specific genetic alterations. As an immunohistological feature, the tumors are deficient in SMARCA4 and SMARCA2 and express sex-determining region Y (SRY)-box 2 (SOX2). Occasionally, there are cases that are less frequent and difficult to distinguish from SMARCA4-deficient non-small cell lung carcinoma (SMARCA4-dNSCLC). There

Recurrent Metacarpal Enchondroma Treated With Strut Allograft: 14-year Follow-up.

Enchondroma of the hand is a common lesion with a recurrence rate of up to 13.3% after curettage and bone grafting. Pathologic fractures often occur. Although allograft bone chips are widely used in the surgical treatment of enchondroma, the use of structural allograft bone has not been reported before. This case report presents a recurrent enchondroma of the fifth metacarpal with pathologic fracture in a 13-year-old girl who had 2 previous interventions and 2 more interventions for other enchondromas in the same hand. These interventions consisted of curettage and autogenous iliac crest bone

Retrospective review of outcome after surgical treatment of enchondromas in the hand.

BACKGROUND: Tumours of the skeleton of the hand are rare. While the majority of bone tumours are benign (89.4%), a small number show signs of malignancy (4.4%). Among the benign bone tumours of the skeleton of the hand, enchondromas are the most common, at 35-65%. METHODS: In the period from 1998 to 2005, a total of 35 enchondromas on the hand were diagnosed at the Trauma Center Lorenz Boehler. These were 16 women and 19 men with an average age of 36 years (age range 16-66). The most common site of an enchondroma was the proximal phalanx in 17 cases, followed by the metacarpal bone in 8 cases

Microvasculature and VEGF expression in cartilaginous tumors.

We examined the microvasculature and VEGF expression in 26 cartilaginous lesions (CL) including 5 enchondromas, 9 grade 1 chondrosarcoma (CS), 6 grade 2 CS, 4 grade 3 CS, 1 mesenchymal, and 1 myxoid chondrosarcoma. The degree of neovascularization was measured by counting microvessels on H&E and factor VIII related antigen immunostained slides. Vessels were divided into pericartilage vessels (PCV) and intracartilage vessels (ICV). PVC comprised vessels around the lobules or invading the lobules but themselves surrounded by noncartilaginous stroma (ie, fibrous stroma); ICV consisted of those ve

[Toxic shock syndrome in 2 girls with pharyngeal infection and wound infection].

In 1981, a 13 year old girl died of her shock lung. She had been admitted with the classical toxic shock syndrome then still unknown to us. Staphylococcus aureus had been cultured from a pharyngeal swab. But even in 1987, it took us 48 hours to correctly diagnose the toxic shock syndrome in a 17 year old girl. The diagnosis became evident when she was found to have a staphylococcus aureus wound infection after a surgical procedure. For pediatricians, it is crucial to know this syndrome well. Not only menstruating girls using tampons, but also quite young children can acquire this disease. Quic
